Hawks blow another in the third period-Jets win 5-3

The Winnipeg Jets were just OK for most of the first part of the season. Except for their games against the Blackhawks.Against the Blackhawks, they were perfect.Andrew Copp and Bryan Little scored in a 32-second span in the third period, and Winnipeg continued its dominance against the Hawks with a 5-3 victory on Thursday on the final night before the NHL All-Star break.

”For some reason, we elevate our game when we play this team and we always give our best,” Little said. ”The big thing for us is having that confidence and having that energy and just will to win against other teams. For some reason, we just have these guys’ numbers.”

Winnipeg (23-25-4) improved to 4-0 against the Blackhawks (30-16-5), outscoring the Blackhawks 13-4. It had dropped four in a row against the Hawks coming into the season.Little, Copp, rookie Patrik Laine and Mark Scheifele each had a goal and an assist, helping the Jets to their third win in their last nine games. The Blackhawks had a 3-2 lead before Copp tipped Josh Morrissey‘s shot past Scott Darling with 4:03 left. Little then blasted a shot by Darling for his 13th of the season, silencing the crowd of 21,746.Scheifele added an empty-netter at 17:57 for his 22nd goal, moving the center into a tie with Laine for the team lead.

”I thought we had good control of the game,” Duncan Keith said. ”They were getting chances, but we were playing well. It was just two sets of two quick goals. It totally changed the game.”

Keith, Nick Schmaltz and Tanner Kero scored for the Blackhawks, who allowed four goals in the third period of a 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Darling finished with 28 stops.Winnipeg also scored two goals in a 42-second span in the first, continuing a disturbing trend for the Blackhawks, who allowed two in 46 seconds against Vancouver on Sunday, and then surrendered a pair of goals in 30 seconds against the Lightning.

”It’s hard to accept these two. Especially this one today,” defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said. ”It’s going to kind of ruin the break a little bit. It’s going to take a little while to swallow the way we’ve lost this one.”

Winnipeg jumped in front in the first when Little made a great pass across the ice to Laine, who drove a one-timer by Darling for a power-play goal at 6:16. Laine returned Tuesday after missing eight games with a concussion.Jacob Trouba then had a big slap shot go off the right skate of Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell and past Darling, with Shawn Matthias getting his stick on the puck just before it crossed the line. It was Matthias’ seventh of the season.

”There were plays that could have been defended against for sure tonight,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. ”We always talk about important shifts. That’s the first shift after a goal, a key shift in games.”

The Blackhawks, who controlled much of the early action, then got one back after Nic Petan was whistled for hooking at 13:02. Just 5 seconds into the ensuing power play, Keith drove a slap shot by Hellebuyck from the left point with Artem Anisimov providing a perfect screen in front.Schmaltz got the tying goal 4 minutes into the second. While Winnipeg defenseman Mark Stuart repeatedly checked Marcus Kruger in the back while the two were on the ice, Schmaltz picked up the loose puck, skated in and beat Hellebuyck on the short side for his third of the season.

Rondo rips Wade & Butler

Chicago Bulls Logo - Red bull with script above head

Bulls guard Rajon Rondo did not appreciate Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler lashing out at their younger teammates through the media Wednesday. In an Instagram post Wednesday evening, Rondo lamented that the Bulls’ leaders didn’t handle their frustration the way Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce would have with the Boston Celtics.

“My vets would never go to the media,” Rondo wrote. “They would come to the team. My vets didn’t pick and choose when they wanted to bring it. They brought it every time they stepped in the gym whether it was practice or a game. They didn’t take days off. My vets didn’t care about their numbers. My vets played for the team. When we lost, they wouldn’t blame us. They took responsibility and got in the gym. They showed the young guys what it meant to work. Even in Boston when we had the best record in the league, if we lost a game, you could hear a pin drop on the bus. They showed us the seriousness of the game.My vets didn’t have an influence on the coaching staff. They couldn’t change the plan because it didn’t work for them. I played under one of the greatest coaches, and he held everyone accountable. It takes 1-15 to win. When you isolate everyone, you can’t win consistently. I may be a lot of things, but I’m not a bad teammate. My goal is to pass what I learned along. The young guys work. They show up. They don’t deserve blame. If anything is questionable, it’s the leadership.”

They keep finding wins here and there, but the chemistry is poisoned, the trust in coaching seems to have eroded, and the price tag is high. Don’t be surprised if changes come to the Bulls in some fashion before the trade deadline.Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 40 points. Dwyane Wade scored 33, but the Bulls let a 10-point lead slip away down the stretch. It was 110-100 with less than three minutes remaining when Millsap, Schroder and Hardaway nailed 3s on consecutive possessions to start the game-ending run. Wade called out his teammates, saying they played like they dont care.Schroder gave Atlanta a one-point lead with a layup, and Dwight Howard made one of two free throws to make it 112-110 with 58.6 seconds left. After Butler banked in a pull-up shot, Howard threw down an alley-oop dunk on a pass from Kent Bazemore. Bad third period does in Hawks vs Lightning

In the third period, Tyler Johnson and the Tampa Bay Lightning looked more like the slick-skating group that dashed to the 2015 Stanley Cup final than a team that’s been languishing near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings this season.Johnson scored two goals 30 seconds apart early in the third, leading Tampa Bay past the Blackhawks 5-2 on Tuesday night to end a three-game slide.Brian Boyle had a goal and an assist, and Nikita Nesterov and Nikita Kucherov also scored for the Lightning, who broke loose for three goals in a 3:57 span to erase a 2-1 deficit. Alex Killorn set up both of Johnson’s goals, and Valtteri Filppula had two assists to help Tampa Bay win for just the third time in 11 games. The Lightning have been battered by injuries this season, including a critical one to sniper Steven Stamkos, who hasn’t skated since sustaining a meniscal tear to his right knee in mid-November. But they rallied impressively against the Blackhawks, who beat Tampa Bay in six games for the 2015 NHL championship.
”It’s big for us,” Johnson said. ”Every point matters right now, so we needed to get that in the third period.
”It’s nice being back here and realizing we were two wins away from a Stanley Cup,” he added. ”Pretty much the exact same team. We know what we can do. It’s a matter of doing it.”
Killorn said the Lightning ”had a chat” about the 2015 final on Tuesday morning at United Center – and that might have made a difference.
”We have a lot of guys in this room that can play, a team that can do some special things,” he said. ”Once we were reminded of that, we played a lot better tonight.”
Jonathan Toews had a goal and an assist, and Duncan Keith also scored for the Blackhawks, who had their three-game winning streak stopped. The Hawks lost for only the third time in its last 10.Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy made 34 saves, getting the start and delivering a strong performance after he relieved Ben Bishop for the third period of the Lightning’s 5-3 loss at Arizona on Sunday.
”Their goalie was excellent tonight,” Joel Quenneville said. ”I think we’ve only generated as much offense in one or two games as we did tonight.”
Corey Crawford blocked 31 shots for the Blackhawks. After Nesterov tied it 2-all off a faceoff 2:47 into the third, Johnson put Tampa Bay ahead for the first time at 6:14. He beat Crawford with a rising shot from the right circle after taking Killorn’s feed.
Johnson made it 4-2 at 6:44 from the edge of the crease with his 15th goal after Killorn’s pass from behind the net. Killorn had fired wide, then retrieved the puck and dished in front.
”We just kept on going,” Johnson said. ”Wanted to use our speed, wanted to use our transition.”
Kucherov added an empty-netter – his team-leading 18th goal – with 2:05 left.Toews stayed hot after getting the game-winning goal and three assists Sunday in a 4-2 victory over Vancouver. In his previous six games, the Blackhawks’ captain had just two assists.Toews’ effort in this one was overshadowed by the Lightning’s late burst.
”You can expect a team like that to come at us the way they did in the third,” Toews said, ”but I think our answer just wasn’t there.”
Sharp goaltending at both ends limited the score to 1-1 after a freewheeling first period filled with chances.Toews opened the scoring at 10:23, completing a cross-ice give-and-go with Richard Panik. Toews got to the edge of the crease and tipped in Panik’s feed after slipping behind Lightning star defenseman Victor Hedman.Boyle tied it with 1:25 left in the period after taking Filppula’s long feed and plowing between the Hawks top defensive pairing of Keith and Niklas Hjalmarsson. Boyle broke in, faked Crawford to the ice and then slid the puck past him with a forehand move.Keith put the Hawks ahead 2-1 at 1:26 of the second on a shot from the left point that glanced in off Vasilevskiy’s glove.
NOTES—Tampa Bay RW J.T. Brown returned after missing seven games with an upper-body injury. … Lightning D Jason Garrison sat out his second game with an illness. … The Blackhawks activated C Marcus Kruger (hand) from injured reserve, but he didn’t play. Wade, Butler(surprise)lead Bulls past Magic

Chicago Bulls Logo - Red bull with script above head

ORLANDO—Dwyane Wade trusts his natural feel for the game when it’s time to defer and allow Jimmy Butler to take over down the stretch. The 14-year veteran guard also knows when his new team needs more of him late in the games. He sensed it Tuesday night, scoring seven of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to propel the Bulls to 100-92 road win over the struggling Orlando Magic. It was the second straight game that Wade took over in the fourth quarter to lead Chicago to victory.

“Each game is different and it calls for something different,” Wade said of how he and Butler play off each other. “Like I said earlier in the year, I think we are both more dynamic when we are both able to score.”

Both took turns in the fourth as the Bulls pulled away in otherwise close game. Butler scored six of his 20 points in the fourth quarter as they took turns pulling up for jumpers and driving to the basket against a Magic team that was playing without three of its top four guards. But Wade just seemed to have a little more energy as he played the role of scorer and facilitator in setting up his teammates for easy baskets throughout the fourth quarter.

“He’s been huge lately,” Butler said. “He’s taking and making shots, tough ones at that, passing the ball to the open guy. Me and him both decided to miss a couple of wide-open layups tonight, that’s part of it. But he has been huge.”

His performance took a little pressure off Jerian Grant, who was inserted back into the starting lineup at point guard before the game. Wade’s vision also played a part in backup center Cristiano Felicio’s 12-point, 10-rebound performance.

“He is obviously a guy who can get it going at any time,” Fred Hoiberg said of Wade. “He had three big buckets going into halftime to get him some confidence and little rhythm and then was awesome in the fourth quarter to close the game.”

The Bulls shook up its point guard position before Tuesday night’s game. Grant replaced Carter-Williams in the starting lineup. Hoiberg said Carter-Williams, who didn’t play, has been demoted and will come off the bench and did not immediately name a backup, although Rajon Rondo was the first off the bench.Injuries caused the Magic to shuffle their starting lineup for the second game in a row. With Augustin out with an ankle injury from Sunday’s loss to Golden State, Vogel shifted C.J. Watson, who started at shooting guard Sunday, to backup point guard and coming off the bench. Jeff Green and Aaron Gordon both started at the wings to match up better against Butler and Wade, Vogel said. Fournier, the starting shooting guard, missed his sixth straight game with a sore right foot. …The MRI on Augustin’s sprained ankle came back negative but he is listed as day-to-day. … Meeks had surgery on his right thumb Tuesday morning and is out indefinitely. That was most evident in the 19 turnovers the team committed. Point guard Elfrid Payton, who had to play 38 minutes because of the lack at the position, committed eight of the costly turnovers.Felicio, who struggled with catching the ball in the paint early in the season, thrived underneath most of the night when the Bulls went to a smaller lineup. He defended Nikola Vucevic decently in the paint and when Butler and Wade found him for lobs inside he made good, converting four of six.The Bulls return home to take on the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night.

Toews bails out Hawks with 1:18 to play.

Jonathan Toews’ offensive numbers have been subpar this season, but the Blackhawks’ captain came through with a huge performance Sunday night.Toews scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:18 remaining and the Blackhawks beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 for their third straight victory(and 7 of last 9).Toews, who also had three assists, connected from the left circle after Richard Panik’s shot from right wing hit Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler’s leg, went wide and caromed off the back boards. Toews fired the puck in before Canucks goalie Ryan Miller could move across the crease.

”The goals I’ve scored lately are just getting those bounces, being in the right spot at the right time,” said Toews, who now has eight goals and 18 assists in 40 games. ”It was nice to get that one on my stick.”

Toews snapped a six-game drought with the goal. He had just two assists during that span.Panik had a goal and an assist and Patrick Kane also scored for the Blackhawks, who have won seven of their last nine. Marian Hossa added an empty-netter with 24 seconds left for his 18th goal and 400th point with the Blackhawks. All the offensive kudos were directed toward Toews, however.

”It’s a huge night for him,” Panik said. ”Hopefully he’ll jump on that and go from here.”

Corey Crawford made 26 saves to earn his 200th win after Troy Stecher and Bo Horvat scored 46 seconds apart early in the third period to tie it for Vancouver.

”It’s always nice to reach those milestones.” Crawford said. ”It’s tough to give up that lead, too.We didn’t get down, didn’t get frustrated. Came back with a big goal. Nice to see `Tazer’ get that one too.”

Miller stopped 31 shots as the Canucks lost in regulation for just the second time in their last 13.And Vancouver’s veteran goalie lost in regulation for the first time since Dec. 22 to Winnipeg. He’s 7-1-2 since that 4-1 defeat.

”It’s really a kick in the teeth to come all the way back and lose on a fairly fluky kind of play,” Miller said. ”We got ourselves back in the game in the second and I think we carried it into the third.Just really disappointed to not get a point at least out of here, especially with that effort.”

Panik and Kane scored 3:03 apart late in the first to stake the Blackhawks to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Hawks dominated the period, outshooting Vancouver 18-9.Set up by Campbell, Panik ripped a one-timer from the slot that clinked off the crossbar and past Miller for his 11th with 5:33 left in the first.Kane got his 15th with 2:30 to go after Vancouver’s Luca Sbisa lost the puck in the right corner. Kane’s shot from the circle hit the stick blade of the Canucks’ Henrik Sedin and deflected over Miller’s shoulder.Crawford had to be sharp at times, including stopping Daniel Sedin on a breakaway 7:41 in.The Blackhawks’ goalie was tested several times in the scoreless second, but kept Vancouver off the board. He stopped Brandon Sutter and Sven Baertschi on point-blank attempts during the Canucks first two power plays. After Michal Kempny was called for holding, Stecher broke through on the Canucks’ third man advantage at 5:03 of the third. Stecher’s high shot from the slot flipped past Crawford’s glove with Daniel Sedin screening in front.Horvat tied it 2-all 46 seconds later to cap a nifty set of moves. He beat Kempny in the left circle and plowed to the net. Crawford stopped Horvat’s first shot, but he followed through and buried the rebound.

NOTES—The crowd of 21,689 was the Blackhawks’ 400th straight sellout. … The Blackhawks honored former star C Jeremy Roenick before the game in a ”One More Shift” ceremony. Roenick, dressed in his gear and No. 27 jersey, skated on to the ice to a standing ovation. He then waved his stick, kissed the ice and stood at the blue line with Blackhawks starters during the national anthems. … Panik’s goal was just his second in 14 games. …The Blackhawks host Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.

Cats get first win in Columbus since 1977

Northwestern Wildcats (1981 - Pres)

COLUMBUS—Scottie Lindsey said the fact that Northwestern won in Columbus for the first time in 40 years on Sunday was not a huge deal to him. What is huge is another important Big Ten win for the Wildcats, who are pushing for an NCAA Tournament bid for the first time in school history.Lindsey scored 21 points and Bryant McIntosh had 17 as Northwestern (16-4, 5-2 Big Ten) beat Ohio State 74-72 for a fourth straight win.

”This team, history doesn’t define us,” Lindsey said. ”The past things that have happened with this program, it doesn’t really matter to this team. We push through that type of stuff. We’ve been through a lot of tough games, a lot of close games. We’ve learned so much that we can go into hostile arenas and environments and pull out a win.”

Ohio State was within two points three times in the final minute of the game but weren’t able to overcome the Wildcats’ lead after being forced to start fouling. The Buckeyes cut the lead to two points on a Micah Potter 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. But C.J. Jackson had to foul Vic Law, who sank both foul shots to make it 72-68. Marc Loving got it back to two with a layup with 10 seconds on the clock, but a pair of foul shots by Lindsey put Northwestern ahead by four. Potter got the final points for Ohio State with a dunk with one second left.Law scored 10 points and Sanjay Lumpkin grabbed 11 rebounds as Northwestern won despite shooting just 37.5 percent. Ohio State committed 13 turnovers leading to 17 Northwestern points.

”It’s no secret, this has kind of been a house of horrors for us for a long time, especially since I’ve been here,” Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. ”We haven’t had a lot of success in this building. Our guys were really determined today to try to come out and make the plays necessary to get a win.”

Jae’Sean Tate led Ohio State (12-8, 2-5) with 14 points, JaQuan Lyle added 13 and Trevor Thompson had 11 points and 15 rebounds. The Buckeyes shot 52.2 percent and outrebounded the Wildcats 40-39.Northwestern took a 36-31 lead at the half after Ohio State had led by as many as six. A Lindsey layup tied it at 23 with 6:46 remaining, and Northwestern went on a 13-8 run from there to take the five-point lead.Ohio State climbed back and took a 55-52 lead on a 3-pointer from Jackson with 8:41 left but couldn’t maintain it. After a foul shot from Thompson tied it at 56, NU took the lead for good on a Lindsey 3-pointer with 4:32 to go.Northwestern won a tough game on the road despite not shooting well. Still on track for first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
