Hawks force shootout with 2 late goals, then edge Leafs

The Blackhawks found themselves down two goals late in the third period before capitalizing on two mistakes by Toronto to force overtime and win in a shootout.Jonathan Toews and Artemi Panarin scored in the shootout to give the Hawks a 5-4 win over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.Artem Anisimov scored his second goal of the game on a rebound with 2:28 left to cut it to 4-3, then Richard Panik knocked in a loose puck in front of the goal 60 seconds later.

”We needed it,” Toews said. ”It wasn’t pretty for a while there in the third sometimes. It looked like wherever we were going they were there and shut us down. Everything was going against us again.”

But Anisimov connected as Blackhawks goalie Scott Darling was heading to the bench for an extra attacker. Darling was on the bench when Panik tied it with his team-leading sixth goal.

”We found a way to score a couple late ones,” coach Joel Quenneviille said. ”We’re certainly fortunate to come back in a game like that. That was a little different way of going about it.”

Toronto rookie William Nylander scored twice for his first multi-goal game, with the 20-year-old’s second goal putting the Maple Leafs ahead 4-2 early in the third. But Toronto blew a lead in the final period for the third straight game and dropped its third straight, going 0-1-2 on a road trip. And the Maple Leafs failed again to win at the United Center for the first time since February 2003.

”I thought we made two mistakes down the stretch,” coach Mike Babcock said. ”I didn’t think we were on our heels at all. It was two blatant ones there, too. You can’t give those up.”

James van Riemsdyk scored a tie-breaking goal late in the second period and Tyler Bozak also connected for Toronto. Rookie Auston Matthews, the NHL’s top 2016 draft pick, set up both of Nylander’s goals and had the lone Toronto goal in the shootout.

”You just try to get open and he finds you pretty well there,” Nylander said.

And Babcock and the Leafs weren’t totally upset in settling for one point.

”All in all, I’m very pleased with the way we played here,” Babcock said. ”I thought Matthews had some great shifts. I think we’re going in the right direction trending the right way.”

Rookie Tyler Motte also scored.. Motte connected for the second straight game after getting his first NHL goal in a 3-2 loss at Columbus on Friday.Brian Campbell had three assists.

NU jumps on Indiana, holds on 21-14

Northwestern Wildcats (1981 - Pres)

EVANSTON—Indiana and Northwestern have the look of two Big Ten teams passing in midseason.Quarterback Clayton Thorson threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday, and the resurgent Wildcats bolted to an early lead then coasted past the Hoosiers 24-14 for their third straight victory. In a reversal of its 1-3 start to the season, Northwestern (4-3, 3-1) took a 24-3 lead and wasn’t seriously threatened the rest of the way.

”Without a doubt, (the difference) is the way we’ve prepared,” Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald said in a hoarse voice that confirmed his more vocal leadership of late. ”We really had to change gears with the way we practiced and worked out, a spring-ball type mentality.”

Meanwhile, Indiana (3-4, 1-3) dropped its third consecutive game after three victories in the first four starts.

”To get out of this deal, we’ve got to batten down the hatches, circle the wagons and get better,” coach Kevin Wilson said. ”Five games left. We need to notch some victories.”

Thorson became the first Northwestern signal-caller since at least 2000 to throw three or more touchdown passes in three consecutive games. He completed 24 passes in 43 attempts and did not throw an interception.Running back Justin Jackson led the Northwestern ground attack with 106 yards in 28 carries.

”Everything worked for us in the first half,” said Thorson, who left the game briefly because of an unspecified upper-body injury midway through the final period. ”We ran for a bunch of yards. We passed for a bunch of yards. We were really balanced.”

The Wildcats took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards for a touchdown, as the Hoosiers had no answer for their no-huddle offense. Thorson connected with Solomon Vault on a 17-yard pass to complete the 11-play drive. After Indiana was unable to move the ball on its next possession, Northwestern needed only five plays to score again.Thorson completed three straight passes for first downs, the last to Austin Carr for a 34-yard touchdown. It marked the sixth straight game in which Carr scored on a pass reception.Griffin Oakes cut the deficit to 14-3 on a 21-yard field five minutes later, but the Wildcats responded immediately. On the first play of the second period, Thorson hooked up with Macan Wilson on a 32-yard strike to climax a nine-play, 79-yard drive.

”We were a little flat-footed early . but they got a handle on it, got a good bead on it,” said Wilson, whose team didn’t allow a point in the second half. ”That’s a credit to not just the coaches but the kids. Because they settled down, and they needed to.”

Nick Westbrook scored Indiana’s lone touchdown on a 3-yard run late in the third period.Forced to throw often in the second half, Hoosiers quarterback Richard Lagow completed 35 of 59 attempts for 319 yards. He was intercepted twice.Westbrook paced the receivers with 10 receptions for 126 yards. While the defense continues to hold its own, there has been little evidence of the high-powered attack that Wilson was expected to bring with him from Oklahoma five years ago. The offense scored just five touchdowns and 51 points in the last three games. ”Same story — can’t run it and can’t score points. So, poorly-coached,” Wilson said…. Fitzgerald and White served as Northwestern assistants under since-deceased coach Randy Walker in the 2001 season. ”Coach Walker was looking down on us today,” Fitzgerald said.

Northwestern: After a slow start, Jackson has busted out in a big way with 465 yards rushing in the last three games. Jackson totaled 359 yards on 60 carries in victories at Iowa and Michigan the last two previous weeks. … Carr caught seven balls for 125 yards. He was the Big Ten leader in and receptions (43), yards (595) and TDs (eight) at the start of the day. … The six-pointer was the first for Wilson in his career.

Michigan Routs Illini 41-8, Crouch joins Lunt as injured QB

Illinois Fighting Illini (2004 - 2013)

ANN ARBOR—Wilton Speight faked a handoff and delivered a strike to Tyrone Wheatley Jr. for a 21-yard touchdown as the tight end when from right to left. Later, he drilled the ball to Amara Darboh, putting it where only the receiver could catch it between a couple defenders as he zipped from left to right. He was so sharp and his team was up by so much that he didn’t even have to play the whole game.Speight threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters before watching No. 3 Michigan finish off Illinois 41-8 Saturday.Taking advantage of last week’s bye, Speight spent a lot of time studying himself.

”I watched all the six games, every snap, and took a lot of notes,” he said.

The Wolverines (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) were leading 34-0 in the fourth quarter when Jim Harbaugh put backup quarterback John O’Korn in the game and rested Speight.Speight, who completed 16 of 23 passes, threw a 3-yard pass to Jake Butt to score the first of four straight TDs to open the game.

”May have had one of his best games,” Harbaugh said. ”It was windy out there. It was tough to throw.”

The Fighting Illini (2-5, 1-3) found that out as they were relegated to starting their third-string quarterback with a familiar name.Jeff George Jr., son of the former Illinois and NFL quarterback, was 4 of 15 for 95 yards with a TD, an interception and a fumble in his first start. He played because Wes Lunt and Chayce Crouch are injured.

”It’s tough, but everybody has to have a start,” Illinois coach Lovie Smith said. ”The running game could have helped him and other people had to play better.”

Illinois ran for 77 yards as a team – 113 below their previous average – and gained just 3.3 yards per carry. After Michigan botched a fake punt near midfield in the fourth quarter with a 34-0 lead, George threw a 43-yard TD pass to Malik Turner on the next snap and followed with a 2-yard conversion pass to Zach Grant.Karan Higdon scored on a 45-yard run on the ensuing possession and finished with 106 yards rushing on just eight carries for the Wolverines.George got off to an awful start, but bounced back with some good throws. He was 0 for 7 in the first half with an interception.

”At one point, I looked up and there was zero yards passing,” Harbaugh said.

George fared better in the second half. He perfectly lofted a 43-yard pass to Turner in the third quarter and dropped another long pass to him just over safety Delano Hill early in the fourth for a TD. George’s father attended the game and gave his son a pregame pep talk.

”He told me to get my mind right and get my emotions in check,” the freshman said. ”He said I belong out there.”

The Wolverines seemed to let up in the second half for the first time this season. They were up big, leading 31-0 at halftime, but didn’t continue to score at will as they did in other lopsided wins. Speight acknowledged that the team has to learn how to not ”give the opponent any sense of life” after building a big lead…..The Wolverines will likely stay ranked No. 3, their highest spot in The Associated Press poll since 2006…..Michigan’s Kenny Allen made two field goals from 23 and 27 yards after missing his previous three attempts…..Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron accepted Harbaugh’s invitation to be the team’s honorary captain, giving him a chance to visit his granddaughter, a student at Michigan. Aaron flipped the coin before the game….The Illini return home to host Minnesota.

Hawks PK still BS in 3-2 loss to Jackets

COLUMBUS—The Blackhawks league worst Penalty killing unti is still awful, and it led to a loss. After a disastrous 0-8 start last year that turned into a season-long tailspin, the Columbus Blue Jackets were desperately looking for a confidence-boosting early win. They got it Friday night.Rookie defenseman Zach Werenski had a goal and an assist, and teammates Nick Foligno and William Karlsson picked up their first goals of the season as the Blue Jackets beat the Blackhawks 3-2 .Columbus’ Sergei Bobrovsky turned in a solid game, blocking 32 shots and surviving a desperate Hawk power-play rally near the end of the game.Columbus never trailed in Friday’s game.

”Just to fight through against a pretty good team that was coming at us in the second half of the game, saw our goalie play really well and keep us there, it just gives us a notch of confidence,” Columbus coach John Tortorella said. ”We keep on going from that.”

Tyler Motte and Richard Panik scored for the Blackhawks (2-3-0), and Corey Crawford had 25 saves. The Blue Jackets (1-2-0) took the lead when the 19-year-old Werenski netted a wrist shot from the point during a power play at 9:10 in the first period. It was his team-leading second goal of the season, with Alexander Wennberg and Foligno credited with assists. The Blackhawks tied it up 2:29 into the second period when a shot by Jonathan Toews ricocheted off Bobrovsky’s pad and was put back by Motte, his first goal of the season.Columbus took advantage of the power play again at 4:36 of the second when Foligno tapped it in from in front of the net, with assists from Werenski and Cam Atkinson.Fourth-line center Karlsson got the Blue Jackets’ final goal with 6:16 left in the second when he tipped in a shot from David Savard through traffic.Panik pulled the Hawks within one at 5:54 into the third period, popping in a goal from in front of the net off a pass from Gustav Forsling, but the Blackhawks couldn’t tie it.The Blackhawks have lost two straight.

”Even when it seems like we’re doing a good job, bounces go against us,” Toews said. ”We’re just a little shaky in some areas, so unfortunately another two goals we gave up in (penalty kill), it’s just not good enough. We deserve all the criticism. We just need to keep finding ways and go deep in really trying to dig ourselves out of this right now.”

NOTES—Columbus D Ryan Murray suffered what the team called an ”upper-body injury” in the first period and did not return. He may have taken an elbow the head. He won’t make the road trip. …The Nationwide Arena crowd of 15,789 included a large, vocal contingency of red-clad Blackhawks fans. … Columbus ended a streak of nine October losses at home dating to 2014. … Bobrovsky and his mates held off a fierce six-shot Chicago rally in front of the net in the last 90 seconds of the second period. … Columbus’ Matt Calvert was penalized 2 minutes for goalie interference in the third period when he tripped Crawford, who came out of the crease to retrieve the puck. The video replay seemed to show that the contact was marginal. … Werenski is first player in Blue Jackets history to post at least one point in each of the first three games of his NHL career. The Blackhawks return home for a Saturday night game against Toronto.

Listless Bears fall to Green Bay 26-10, Hoyer breaks left arm

GREEN BAY—Aaron Rodgers set a record. The Chicago Bears lost another quarterback. After a slow start in the red zone, the Green Bay Packers picked up the pace in the second half to overpower their offensively-challenged NFC North rivals.Rodgers threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, Davante Adams and Ty Montgomery emerged as playmakers in the second half and Packers beat the Bears 26-10 on Thursday night.Rodgers was 39 of 56, setting a franchise mark for completions in a game. It was the Packers’ first contest without injured running back Eddie Lacy .

”A lot of moving parts, a very satisfying victory at home,” coach Mike McCarthy said.
The Packers (4-2) moved effectively on short gains most of the night, but couldn’t break into the end zone until Adams caught the first of his two touchdown receptions with 9:11 left in the third quarter for a 13-10 lead.Rodgers and Adams combined again for a 4-yard score on the first play of fourth quarter for a 10-point lead. The Bears (1-6) lost quarterback Brian Hoyer to a broken left arm in the second quarter. With Jay Cutler already out with a right thumb injury, the Bears turned to third-stringer Matt Barkley. An offense that was already 31st in the league in scoring got worse. Barkley was 6 of 15 for 81 yards and two interceptions.

”Well, when you lose your starting quarterback it can be disruptive,” Bears coach John Fox said. ”It’s not an excuse, it’s just a reality,”

He tried to lean on the rush against the NFL’s third-best run defense. It didn’t work either.Kadeem Carey had 48 yards on 10 carries, including a 24-yarder. Receiver Alshon Jeffery was held to three catches for 33 yards against a Packers secondary without its top three cornerbacks because of injuries. It got so bad for the Bears that Rodgers had more completions (37) than the Bears had offensive plays (36) by 5:31 of the fourth quarter. That 37th completion for Rodgers was a 2-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb for a 16-point lead.Adams, Montgomery and Cobb each finished with at least 10 receptions.Hoyer left early in the second quarter after getting hit by Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews on an incompletion on third-and-6 from midfield. The right-handed Hoyer looked as if he landed on his left arm . He was attended to by trainers on the field for a couple minutes before going to the locker room. Hoyer was 4 of 11 for 49 yards.Adams had 13 catches for a career-high 132 yards, making Jordy Nelson-like moves to spin out of tackles for extra yards. Adams had just been cleared earlier Thursday from the NFL’s concussion protocol after leaving the loss Sunday to Dallas.Cobb finished with 11 catches for 95 yards.Montgomery, who got the start in the backfield with running backs Lacy (ankle) and James Starks (knee) out, finished with 10 catches for 66 yards, and nine carries for 60 yards. The Bears’ only touchdown came from rookie pass-rushing linebacker Leonard Floyd, who forced Rodgers to fumble on third-and-10 from the 15 on a sack. Floyd recovered the ball in the end zone for a 10-6 lead, 30 seconds into the third quarter.Floyd had been limited in practice this week with a calf injury.

”He’s got those kind of abilities. It’s been problematic a little bit having him out there, but it was good to have him back out there tonight,” Fox said.

The Packers scored touchdowns on their next three drives. The Packers moved effectively with short passes in the first half but stalled on three drives inside the 22. Mason Crosby salvaged two series with field goals, but the Packers went scoreless on another drive when Montgomery was stopped on a fourth-and-goal run from the 1.Green Bay, which led 6-3 at the half, exploited the Bears’ underneath coverage. They also threw short passes as a substitute for the running game. Besides Hoyer, RG Kyle Long left in the second quarter with an arm injury. The Bears host Minnesota a week from Monday night.

Hossa gets #500 as Hawks beat Flyers 7-4

Marian Hossa scored his 500th career goal, Artem Anisimov snapped a third-period tie with his first score of the season and the Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers 7-4 on Tuesday night.Hossa’s power-play goal chased Michal Neuvirth and gave the Blackhawks a 4-0 lead, but Philadelphia responded with four goals in a 5 1/2-minute span overlapping the second and third periods. Wayne Simmonds, who hit the left post on two different shots, tied it at 4 on the power play at 3:49 of the third. The Flyers had all the momentum before Artemi Panarin stepped up for the Blackhawks in his best game so far this season. The Calder Trophy winner found a wide-open Anisimov for the tiebreaking goal at 10:24, and then finished off a 2-on-1 with Patrick Kane, beating Steve Mason for a 6-4 lead with 3:57 to go.Panarin also scored on the power play during a three-goal first. The Russian winger was kept off the scoresheet during the Blackhawks’ first three games.Anisimov added an empty-netter with 45 seconds left, helping the Hawks to their second straight win after it dropped its first two. Anisimov finished with four points, and Kane had his first goal of the season to go along with three assists. The 37-year-old Hossa slid a backhander through Neuvirth’s legs at 5:04 of the second, becoming the 44th player to reach 500 career goals. The rugged winger, long one of the NHL’s best two-way players, then skated behind the net and threw his arms in the air before celebrating with his teammates in front of the Hawk bench. The crowd of 21,263 at the United Center roared when the milestone goal was announced, and Hossa waved his stick to acknowledge the standing ovation. But it looked as if he left in the third with an injury.Neuvirth was pulled after Hossa’s goal. He finished with 12 saves, and Mason made nine stops.Matt Read had two goals for Philadelphia, and captain Claude Giroux finished with three assists. Sean Couturier also scored.Corey Crawford made 23 saves for the Hawks

NOTES—Michal Rozsival and Trevor van Riemsdyk were healthy scratches. … The Blackhawks visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.

Late TD by Benn gives Jacksonville comeback win over Bears

Former Illini Arrelious Benn went five years between touchdowns. Once he finally scored, he sure made it count.Blake Bortles threw for 271 yards, and a slipping Benn caught a 51-yard touchdown in the closing minutes, lifting the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 17-16 victory over the Bears on Sunday. The Jaguars (2-3) wiped out a 13-0 deficit in the fourth quarter in a matchup of last-place teams. And the go-ahead touchdown might have been helped by the oft-criticized turf at Soldier Field.Benn slipped as he caught a slant and so did Tracy Porter as he tried to tag the receiver. That allowed Benn, who spent the past three seasons on injured reserve, to get up and run untouched for his first touchdown since he caught three for Tampa Bay during the 2011 season.

”That goes to show you that I went through a lot of adversity,” said Benn , who was sidelined by injuries to his knee and clavicle. ”I had a lot of injuries, being injured three years, being out of football for three years. I know it’s a slow process as far as getting back, especially behind the guys we have here. For me, I looked at it as an opportunity for me to better myself as far as those years I missed and also to bring that veteran leadership to the younger guys and help make those guys better.”

Benn’s TD put Jacksonville on top by a point with 2:49 left and sent the Jaguars to just their fifth win in 26 road games in coach Gus Bradley’s four seasons. It also gave the Bears (1-5) another loss after they dropped the previous game to Indianapolis on a late TD pass by Andrew Luck. The Bears racked up 389 yards, but came away with just one touchdown in four trips inside the 20.

”It’s not lack of heart, lack of trying,” Bears coach John Fox said. ”Our guys battled. We just don’t play well enough right now. That’s on all of us.”

Brian Hoyer threw for 302 yards – his fourth straight 300-yard game filling in for the injured Jay Cutler (sprained right thumb).Cameron Meredith had 11 catches for 113 yards. Alshon Jeffery added 93 yards receiving – all but three in the first half.Willie Young had two sacks. Porter intercepted Bortles in the end zone early on, but Chicago fell to 2-9 at home in two seasons under Fox.Bortles completed 20 of 33 passes with a touchdown and interception. Allen Hurns added 74 yards receiving, and Chris Ivory ran for a TD for Jacksonville. The Jaguars didn’t score until the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, when Ivory ran in from the 1 to cut it to 13-7. On their next possession, a strip-sack by Young and recovery by Akiem Hicks gave the Bears the ball at the Jacksonville 28, leading to a field goal by Connor Barth. But Jacksonville cut the lead back to six with 4:59 remaining on a 30-yard field goal by Jason Myers.Porter intercepted Bortles in the end zone on Jacksonville’s first possession off a pass that popped out of Allen Robinson’s hands, stopping a drive that began at the Bears 10.Hoyer on the Bears’ struggles: ”No one is going to give us a chance the rest of the way and that’s OK. As long as the people in that room believe we’ll be fine.” Tashaun Gipson (knee) was active after being listed as questionable on Saturday.Eddie Royal left with a toe injury in the fourth quarter. … Porter hurt his knee near the end of the game. … LG Josh Sitton left in the closing minutes because of an ankle injury. He was already dealing with a shoulder problem. … Besides Cutler, the Bears were missing LB Leonard Floyd (calf), NT Eddie Goldman (ankle) and RB Jeremy Langford (ankle).

Irish continue to nose dive with loss to Stanford.

SOUTH BEND—The free fall continues for Notre Dame.Nothing seemed to be going right for Stanford until cornerback Quenton Meeks changed the momentum when he intercepted a pass by Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.Wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside recovered a fumble in the end zone after Bryce Love fumbled on the goal line to cap the comeback in a 17-10 victory Saturday night as Stanford rallied back from a 10-point deficit.Stanford coach David Shaw said the interception by Meeks was key.

”Quenton Meeks is a ball hawk. We saw that last year,” Shaw said. ”He’s got great instincts on top of his physical tools. He’s long, he’s physical, he’s smart, and he’s got a feel for the ball.”

The Irish defense, which had forced three previous turnovers in their own territory, had a chance to recover the fumble but linebacker Nyles Morgan tried to scoop up the ball. When he failed to pick it up, Arcega-White recovered it. Stanford, playing without injured Christian McCaffrey, added a 2-point conversion on a pitch to Love, who ran in untouched.Shaw said the Cardinal never stopped fighting.

”For us, the second-half mantra that we continued to say was keep playing hard, good things happen. Just keep playing hard. Don’t worry about the last play, don’t worry about the mistake you just made, just keep playing hard, and we started to feel it on the sidelines,” Stanford coach David Shaw said.

It was the opposite for the Irish, who couldn’t do much right in the second half.

”We made some mistakes and we couldn’t get the momentum back,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said.

Stanford (4-2), which started the season ranked No. 8, averted losing three straight for the first time since 2007. The Irish (2-5) ranked No. 10 in the preseason, lost a third straight home game for the first time since 2007.ND had a chance to tie it in the closing seconds. But DeShone Kizer couldn’t get a pass off on fourth-and-10 from the 14. He was about to be sacked and he appeared to try to pitch the ball to left guard Quenton Nelson, but the officials ruled it a fumble and blew the ball dead. It was the fourth time this season where the Irish had a chance to tie or win the game on the final possession and couldn’t do it.Shaw said the play of the defense was key.Meeks, who missed the previous two games with an injury, picked off Kizer on the first possession of the second half to cut the score to 10-7.

“Once the ball was in the air, I felt it was mine,” he said. ”I just didn’t regard him (the receiver) and just went and got the ball, and my next thought was the end zone.”

Malik Zaire replaced Kizer for three possessions but couldn’t get anything going and the Irish gave up a safety when a snap from center Sam Mustipher, who had three bad snaps in the hurricane last week against North Carolina State, snapped the ball through the end zone.Kelly said Kizer wasn’t injured, he was just looking for a spark.

”I just felt like it was important to try to get some energy back,” he said. ”I thought going to Malik would do that.”

The Cardinal, who had one offensive touchdown in each of their last three games, continued to struggle offensively but came up with the big play when it needed it. Stanford drove 47 yards on 12 plays on its opening possession, but Conrad Ukropina’s 45-yard field goal attempt bounced off the upright. The Irish defense, which had given up at least 30 points to the first four Power 5 opponents it faced this season, held an opponent to 17 points or less for a second week.

Kelly became annoyed at something a Stanford strength coach said to him after the game. Asked what he said, Kelly said: ”Bye-bye.” Asked if that was all, Kelly said: ”Yeah, bye-bye.”

The Cardinal return to Pac-12 play with a home game against Colorado next Saturday, a team it has beaten five straight times. The Irish get the week off before hosting No. 16 Miami on Oct. 29.
