Illini come up short against Boilers

CHAMPAIGN—Hammons scored 17 points to lead Purdue to a 66-58 win over Illinois on Wednesday. The Boilermakers (12-5, 2-2 Big Ten) trailed 33-29 at halftime, but they opened the second half with 10-5 run to regain the lead and held off the Illini (13-5, 2-3).The 7-foot Hammons was a force inside for Purdue. He finished with a game-high eight rebounds – the Boilermakers held a 42-31 advantage on the boards – and was a big reason why Purdue scored 30 points in the paint.Ronnie Johnson added 13 points for Purdue while Terone Johnson had 10.The loss was the third straight for the Illini.Tracy Abrams led Illinois with 13 points. Rayvonte Rice had 10 by halftime but the Boilermakers stifled the Big Ten’s leading scorer in the second half. He finished with 11.Rice played with a hip injury that led head coach John Groce to question earlier in the week if he would be able to play at all.Illinois stayed close through the second half but, fittingly, it was a bucket
from Hammons that put the Boilermakers in control for good. With 2:35 to play the Illini pulled back to within a point at 58-57 on a long, low-arc 3-pointer by Jon Ekey. The low shot looked like it might not fall, but when it did the crowd got loud and on its feet. But at the other end, with Illinois playing tough defense, Hammons pulled down a Ronnie Johnson miss and calmly sank the short jumper for a 60-57 edge that, after the strong start to the half, would prove to be enough. The final points of that early-second half run fell into the Boilermakers’ laps in spite of coach Matt Painter’s efforts to get Ronnie Johnson to slow the offense down.

”Hold up, Ronnie! Hold up!” Painter shouted at the guard.Johnson didn’t listen. Instead he quickly hit Basil Smotherman as he broke under the basket for a bucket that put the Boilermakers back on top, 39-38 and drew a ”why not?” shrug from Painter.Purdue owned the boards in the second half, out-rebounding Illinois 23-7.The Boilermakers led much of the first half, too. But as they headed down the tunnel at the State Farm Center at halftime, they had to wonder what has just happened. With 3:52 left in the half, Purdue was up 27-19, its biggest lead of the night, and had just scored six straight points. The Illini didn’t appear to have an answer.

Good effort by Cats not enough against #4 MSU

EVANSTON—Gary Harris scored 14 points and No. 4 Michigan State beat Northwestern 54-40 on Wednesday night for its ninth consecutive victory. The preseason favorite to win the Big Ten, the Spartans (16-1, 5-0 Big Ten) continue to roll along, although it was hardly an easy night for them. They overcame a sluggish start and pulled away down the stretch even though they struggled in a big way from the outside. They were 2 of 16 on 3-pointers with Harris missing all six and Keith Appling going 0 for 3. Harris did have four steals, and Appling managed to score 11 points.Branden Dawson, fighting an illness, had 11 rebounds and three blocks, and the Spartans came away with the win even though they were missing one of their top players in Adreian Payne. The 6-foot-10 forward sat out his second successive game because of a sprained right foot, but Michigan State had enough to get by in this one.Tre Demps did his best to keep Northwestern (8-10, 1-4) in the game, scoring 10 of his 12 points in the second half, but leading scorer Drew Crawford never got going. He managed just six points with Denzel Valentine guarding him most of the game, and the Wildcats came up short after beating then-No. 23 Illinois on Sunday night to give new coach Chris Collins his first Big Ten victory. They haven’t knocked off a top five team since they took out fourth-ranked Michigan State on Jan. 27, 1979.Coming off back-to-back overtime victories against Ohio State and Minnesota, Michigan State probably could have used a breather. The problem was the Spartans had trouble sustaining a run. They looked like they were poised to put this one away after Travis Trice nailed a 3 and Matt Costello scooped in a reverse layup to make it 40-31 with 11:36 remaining. But Demps answered with a basket for Northwestern. It was 44-37 when Alex Gauna banked in a shot to start a six-point spurt that gave the Spartans a double-digit lead.Harris hit two free throws and stripped Demps, leading to two more foul shots for Appling that made it 50-37 with 4:59 left, and the Spartans hung on from there.
