Verlander outduels Sale as Tigers again sweep Sox to tie for first place

DETROIT—Justin Verlander’s second pitch of the night went sailing over the wall in right field, and the struggling ace figured out immediately what was wrong.

“I just realized pretty quickly that I didn’t have great fastball control, so I started to give a little bit more effort — thinking, `Well, if I don’t have great control, I’m not going to get beat with 90 [mph] over the plate,”‘ Verlander said. “I’d rather get beat with 95, 96.”

The White Sox didn’t have much of a chance once Verlander made his crucial adjustment. He shut down the Sox after the first inning, and Delmon Young hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the sixth Sunday night to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory and a share of first place in the AL Central.Alejandro De Aza homered off Verlander (13-7) to lead off the game, but the right-hander was outstanding after that. He allowed four hits in eight innings, striking out 11 with two walks. The Tigers swept the three-game series to pull even with the White Sox atop the division.

“Like I said, this wasn’t the Super Bowl today, this was a game. We had a good weekend,” Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. “We just beat a very good team, a team that’s been in first place for most of the year. It’s going to be hard to take that away from them. They’re good and they’ve answered every bell so far.”

Chris Sale (15-6) allowed four runs and five hits in six innings.Jose Valverde allowed a run in the ninth but held on for his 28th save in 32 chances.Pinch-hitter Dan Johnson hit an RBI single off Valverde, and with men on first and third, Orlando Hudson hit a line drive to center. Austin Jackson momentarily misjudged it before tracking back to make the game-ending catch.Amid a playoff-type atmosphere for a rare Sunday night game at Comerica Park, De Aza struck immediately. In his first at-bat after coming off the disabled list, he connected for his seventh homer of the year. De Aza had been out with injured ribs.Verlander shook off that setback quickly, striking out three in the first inning and making it clear this would not be a repeat of his eight-run, 12-hit disaster at Kansas City in his previous start.Sale was sharp too. He struck out seven and walked four, but Brennan Boesch sent a drive to center in the fifth for his 12th homer of the season, tying the game.In the sixth, Omar Infante singled and Miguel Cabrera walked to start a Detroit rally. Prince Fielder struck out, but Young – who is on an eight-game hitting streak – homered to left. It was his 17th home run of the year.

“Just trying to put a ball in play and hope for the best,” Young said. “I was looking fastballs so I can get ready and just try to make the adjustment.”

When Sale returned to the dugout, he angrily sent a container of gum flying. The lead was plenty safe with Verlander, who passed teammate Max Scherzer to take a 209-204 lead atop baseball’s strikeout chart. It’s the first time two Detroit pitchers have reached 200 since Mickey Lolich and Joe Coleman did it three straight seasons from 1971-73.Verlander received a huge ovation from the crowd after striking out Dewayne Wise with his 124th and final pitch. This is Verlander’s fourth straight season with 200 strikeouts and sixth straight with 200 innings pitched. The White Sox have lost seven straight to the Tigers. They were swept in a three-game series at Comerica in July, momentarily ceding first place to Detroit before taking it back in short order. Now the teams look set for a tense September. The Tigers begin a series with Cleveland on Monday, while the White Sox head back to Chicago for a 10-game homestand that includes a four-game showdown with Detroit from Sept. 10-13.There was already a hint of contentiousness in this one, when Verlander and A.J. Pierzynski exchanged words during one of the designated hitter’s two strikeouts.

“After the 1-0 pitch, he yelled something — two words that I could not repeat either one of them,” Verlander said. “So I had some words back at him once he struck out.”

Pierzynski downplayed the incident.

“The way [Max] Scherzer and Verlander pitched the last couple nights makes it tough on anybody,” he said. “You could throw the `27 Yankees out there and they’re going to get them out.”

Scherzer went eight scoreless innings for Detroit on Saturday night.Adam Dunn missed his second straight game Sunday with a strained oblique.

NOTES—As expected, the Tigers recalled RHP Al Alburquerque from Triple-A Toledo before the game. He hasn’t pitched for Detroit since offseason surgery on his pitching elbow…..Jackson reached in the fifth on a weird error when first baseman Paul Konerko let the ball roll all the way until it hit the base and bounced away, allowing Jackson — who wasn’t close to the bag yet — to arrive safely…..Tyler Flowers went from first to third on a wild pitch with two out in the seventh but was stranded…..Detroit RHP Anibal Sanchez (2-4) starts Monday against Cleveland RHP Corey Kluber (0-3)…..Hector Santiago (2-1) starts Monday night for the Sox against Minnesota RHP Samuel Deduno (5-2).

Pagan helps beats ex mate Marmol. Giants beat Cubs 7-5

Former Cub Angel Pagan hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning and the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants closed out a successful road trip with a 7-5 win over the Northsiders on Sunday.Santiago Casilla (6-5) pitched an inning to get the victory and Javier Lopez got the final two outs for his sixth save in eight chances, making the Giants 5-1 on a six-game swing against the Astros and Cubs — the two worst teams in the NL Central,or for that matter all of Baseball. San Francisco carried a 3-1 lead into the fifth but Darwin Barney scored on right fielder Hunter Pence’s error and Alfonso Soriano hit a three-run drive off Matt Cain for his 25th homer, putting the Cubs ahead 5-3.Brandon Belt tripled in another ex Cubs Xavier Nady in the sixth and scored the tying run on Manuel Corpas’ wild pitch. Then the Giants took advantage of a bout of wildness by Carlos Marmol to grab the lead in the ninth.Nady led off with a four-pitch walk and was replaced by Gregor Blanco, who swiped second with one down. Brandon Crawford then walked and Pagan followed with a single to center. Marco Scutaro added another RBI single to give the Giants a two-run cushion.Marmol (2-3) was 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA in his previous 17 appearances. The Cubs open a four game series at Washington Monday, but they will miss Steven Strasburg who won on Sunday, and according to the Nationals, will have just two more starts before being shutdown for the season.

Scherzer blanks Sox for 8 innings. Tigers win 5-1, back to within one game of first place

DETROIT—Max Scherzer allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings, and the Detroit Tigers pulled within a game of first place with a 5-1 victory over the White Sox on Saturday night.Detroit has taken the first two games of this series from the AL Central-leading White Sox and will send Justin Verlander to the mound Sunday to try for a sweep against Chris Sale. Scherzer (15-6) won his fifth straight start, striking out nine with one walk.Delmon Young homered and tripled for the Tigers.Francisco Liriano (5-11) allowed three runs, four hits and seven walks in four-plus innings. The Sox were swept in a three-game set in Detroit in July, momentarily ceding first place to the Tigers. Now the White Sox are in danger of being caught atop the division. Paul Konerko, who fanned three times against Scherzer, scored the only Sox run in the 9th when Orlando Hudson knocked him in against Jose Valverde.

Late TD in final two minutes carries Iowa past NIU at Soldier Field

Damon Bullock ran for 150 yards and scored on a late 23-yard touchdown run to lead Iowa to an 18-17 victory over Northern Illinois in the season opening SOLDIER FIELD SHOWDOWN III on Saturday. The Hawkeyes simply got all they could handle from the reigning Mid-American Conference champions but came out on top after trailing most of the way. They were down 17-12 when Bullock ran untouched around the left end to put them ahead by one. That happened after Iowa downed a punt at the NIU 1, pinning the Huskies against the goal line.Rather than take a safety, NIU punted. Iowa took over on the Huskie 24 and Bullock ran it in around left end on third down. The 2-point conversation failed, but the defense held its ground, giving Iowa a tense victory on the Lake Front.
Bullock came up big with the Hawkeyes’ running back rotation depleted, and quarterback James Vandenberg taking a beating. Vandenberg was sacked six times and threw for 129 yards.Jordan Lynch threw for just 54 yards in his first start as Northern Illinois’ quarterback but ran for 119. That included a 73-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to give the Huskies a 17-9 lead, after his fumble on the first drive of the half led to a field goal for Iowa. The Hawkeyes are eyeing a big jump after two frustrating seasons following the 2009 Orange Bowl season. A 15-11 record during that stretch and a pair of 4-4 finishes in the Big Ten simply didn’t sit well, and the Hawkeyes are looking for more. They brought in longtime Texas coordinator Greg Davis to spruce up an offense that had become so predictable by the end of last season, but fans who were hoping to see a little more flash didn’t exactly get that.Instead, the Hawkeyes pounded the ball even though five players expected to compete for carries were not on the field. And they came up short a few too many times when they had shots at the end zone.Take this sequence early in the second half.Trailing by four, Iowa took over on the NIU 14 after Joe Gaglione stripped Lynch of the ball on the first drive of the half. But instead of a touchdown to take the lead, the Hawkeyes settled for a field goal by Mike Meyer after they converted a fourth down at the 5 and stalled at the 3. Worse for Iowa, Aidan Conlon sprung Lynch with a block on the next possession for a 73-yard touchdown run up the right side that bumped NIU’ lead to 17-9. Another threat early in the fourth quarter ended with a field goal for Iowa – a 50-yarder by Meyer after Vandenberg got sacked for 10 yards by Sean Evans with the ball on the 26.

NOTES—Meyer had a field goal in each of the four quarters, which provided all Iowa points until Bullock’s game winning TD….NIU is now 0-8 lifetime against Iowa, and 0-3 at Soldier Field, falling last year to Wisconsin and two years ago to the Hawkeyes…The crowd of better than 52,000 saw Hawkeye fans have the majority, but NIU had a decent presence as well.

Cats pull out 42-41 win in final minute at Syracuse on Siemian to Fields 9 yd TD pass

SYRAC– USE—Backup quarterback Trevor Siemian hit Demetrius Fields for a 9-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds left and Northwestern held on to beat Syracuse 42-41 Saturday in the teams’ season opener.Siemian, subbing for starter Kain Colter, drove the Wildcats 75 yards in 10 plays, taking advantage of a critical personal foul against Syracuse defender Keon Lyn for a late hit out of bounds on the previous play. The decisive score in the sweltering Carrier Dome came after Ryan Nassib had engineered a stunning comeback for the Orange, throwing for four second-half touchdowns. Nassib finished 44 of 65 for 470 yards. His completions obliterated the school record of 29 he’d shared with Marvin Graves and Andrew Robinson.Nassib threw a pretty 20-yard TD to Christopher Clark in the left corner of the end zone with 2:40 left in the game for the go-ahead score with 2:40 left and Prince-Tyson Gulley ran in the two-point conversion to give the Orange a 41-35 lead after having trailed 35-13 in the third quarter.Nassib also hit Marcus Sales for a 7-yard touchdown and combined with Jeremiah Kobena on scores of 50 and 7 yards, the latter with 6:42 left in the fourth to move Syracuse within 35-33.Syracuse was still in it at halftime despite the heroics of Northwestern star Venric Mark, who scored twice and accumulated 203 all-purpose yards in the first half. The Wildcats have their Home opener against Vanderbilt next Saturday night.

Illini overcome injury to Scheelhaase to beat W.Mich 24-7

CHAMPAIGN—With quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase injured, Ashante Williams returned an interception 60 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown to help Illinois and new coach Tim Beckman hang on for a 24-7 win Saturday over Western Michigan in the season opener for both teams. The Illini opened up a 17-0 lead but their offense stalled when Scheelhaase left the game with an ankle injury late in the third quarter. The Broncos came to life and pulled to within 17-7 with an 8-yard touchdown from Alex Carder to Jaime Wilson just before the end of the quarter.Western Michigan was driving again when Williams picked off Carder to douse the comeback.Scheelhaase was 11 of 18 for 126 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a touchdown.Carder finished 26 of 43 for 239 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.

Lincecum strong as former Cub Xavier Nady doubles in three, Giants win 5-2.

Tim Lincecum pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning and Xavier Nady had a three-run double in his first game of the season, helping the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants beat the Cubs 5-2 on Saturday.Lincecum (8-14) allowed two runs on David DeJesus’ seventh homer and struck out seven over 6 1-3 innings in a solid effort on a breezy day at Wrigley Field.Nady, promoted from Triple-A Fresno when major league rosters expanded Saturday, hit a bases-loaded smash past third and into the left-field corner to give San Francisco a 4-0 lead in the first.

Emerald Rout as Irish crush Navy 50-10 in Ireland

DUBLIN—Theo Riddick and George Atkinson each ran for two scores and defensive end Stephon Tuitt returned a fumble 77 yards for another TD as Notre Dame routed Navy 50-10 in Saturday’s season opener in Ireland.A crowd of 49,000, mostly visiting Americans, filled Dublin’s Aviva Stadium for the first U.S. college game in Ireland since 1996, when the same two teams played in the Emerald Isle Classic. But this was no classic regardless of the enthusiasm of the fans, who did the wave even as both sides sent in substitutes in fourth-quarter garbage time. The Fighting Irish dominated the game, running the ball at will against Navy’s undersized defense and showing no signs of missing suspended starter Cierre Wood. Riddick went for 107 yards and Atkinson gained 99 on nine carries, leaving the Midshipmen and their outnumbered fans disconsolate at the end.Riddick started the Irish blowout with an 11-yard run to cap an 11-play opening drive. Atkinson broke free on the next drive, sweeping right and then cutting back and rampaging untouched through a bevy of Midshipmen for a 56-yard score. And sophomore quarterback Everett Golson, making his first start, put the Fighting Irish up 27-0 with a 5-yard jump ball into the end zone to tight end Tyler Eifert, who beat two smaller Navy defenders.Golson, who ended 12 of 18 for 144 yards, often looked best on play-action rollouts. But he did make one mistake that gave Navy some brief momentum when he tried to hit Eifert for a second TD and threw the ball into double coverage. Cornerback Parrish Gaines stepped in front of the pass at the Navy 4 for an easy interception.Navy appeared to be heading for its first touchdown on the ensuing drive, but backside pressure from Notre Dame defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore spurred a clumsy fumble from Navy quarterback Trey Miller.Tuitt, listed at 6-feet-6 and 302 pounds, scooped up the ball and rumbled untouched 77 yards to put the Irish up 27-0 with barely 2 minutes left in the first half. It was Notre Dame’s longest fumble return in history.Navy managed a 26-yard field goal before halftime and opened the second half with a nifty three-pass drive capped by Shawn Lynch’s 25-yard grab to make it 27-10 but could get no closer.Atkinson and Riddick replied with two of Notre Dame’s three second-half touchdowns.Miller was 14 for 19 for 192 yards, but Navy’s triple-option managed only 149 yards rushing on 40 carries.Notre Dame’s defensive leader, inside linebacker Manti Te’o, recovered a fumble and intercepted Miller’s final pass of the day into triple coverage. One problem for Notre Dame: The Irish missed two extra points. The first attempt went wide right, while another snap went through the hands of holder Ben Turk.
