Another Chicago Legend Passes Away

Photo: More sadness as a long time friend and Colleige JOE MOOSHIL has passed away at the age of 85. I've known Joe since the 1970's when I got to talk to him in different Press Boxes. In 1976 he hired me to do some game day work for the Associated Press, That's about the same time I began working for AP Broadcasting as well, and a year before I started at Sportsphone. It's true Joe could have a loud and booming voice and could call you different names. But I learned quickly that when he called you stuff like a "Silly C*** S*****" it was a term of endearment. I have so many neat stories about Moosh, such as his reaction when I played the Lee Elia tirade for him April 29,1983, and when he had to interview ME for quotes in New Orleans Jan 23,1986 during Super Bowl XX week. It was about the so called story that Jim McMahon had called the Women of New Orleans 'sluts' on an interview with Fred Winston and myself on WLS(which NEVER happened). I starting laughing, and he-with a serious look on his face-asked me "what's so funny you "Silly C*** S*****". I laughed harder, and said "This has to be killing you, that you have to gets quotes from ME!" He broke out into laughter, then got serious again and said "Just answer the damned questions!"<br />
When I lost my WLS gig in late Dec 1989, Joe called me and just wanted to know if I was OK. That's the type of guy Joe Mooshil was.<br />

Luck and the Colts then went three and out, but from his own three,Cutler on first down dropped back out of the shot gun into his own end zone and threw a pass right to Colts LD Jerrell Freeman who simply walked into the end zone and it was 7-0 indy. On the next series, the Bears woke up. Cutler who was 1-10 to start, then suddenly connected on 14 of his next 17. He drove the Bears 80 yards in 11 plays, with Matt Forte’s runs of 32 and 15 yards left the ball on the Colts 1 and Michael Bush scored his first of two TD.s to tie the game at 7. Indy got their first offensive TD when Donald Brown scored on a nifty 18 yard run with 3:17 before halftime, but the Bears had a last second 72 yard drive as Bush again scored from the 1 and it was 24-14 at halftime.
The Bears pretty much put it away on Forte’s 6 yd run and a 26 yard Gould TD in the third period, then Cutler hit Rookie Alshon Jeffery who came uo with a great catch to finish a 42 yard bomb, and the scoring. Marshall had nine catches for 119 yards and his one touchdown in his first game since being reunited with Cutler. Matt Forte ran for 80 yards and a score, and also had 40 yards receiving.

Before the game, Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he would be more likely to stick with Samardzija deeper in the game because there was no need to save him for a future start. Samardzija threw a season-high 120 pitches. He was not sharp to start the game, allowing a single to Brock Holt, hitting Andrew McCutchen and walking Garrett Jones before Alvarez’s single drove in Holt and McCutchen. But Samardzija settled in after that hit, retiring the next eight hitters and 19 of the next 20 until Rod Barajas reached via a throwing error by shortstop Starlin Castro with two outs in the seventh and the Cubs leading 3-2.Pinch-hitter Jeff Clement followed with a single off the wall in right, scoring pinch-runner Josh Harrison.Just as he said, Sveum stuck with Samardzija – not only in facing Clement but in letting him hit the following inning with the go-ahead run on second and one out.Samardzija grounded out, but Campana walked before DeJesus lined a single to right off Jason Grilli (1-5).Alex Presley’s throw arrived at about the same time as Castillo, but Castillo’s nifty slide eluded Michael McKenry’s tag. Castillo had led off the eighth with a single. The Cubs got a run in the second, third and fifth innings. Soriano led off the second with his 27th homer, the most he’s had since 2008. It was his fourth home run in his past nine games. Two days after the Cubs were involved in two dugout-clearing incidents against the Washington Nationals, home plate umpire Scott Berry warned both dugouts after James McDonald hit Anthony Rizzo with a pitch in the third. Samardzija plunked McCutchen in the first. The Cubs’ Steve Clevenger learned early Saturday he would be serving a one-game suspension for his role in the Saturday’s game.McDonald allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings.
