Throw Back Uniforms, same old Cubs.

SAN FRANCISCO — Matt Cain paid tribute to old-school baseball by bringing his hands behind his head and releasing his first pitch with the high windup, recreating the look of a bygone era. After that, he was vintage Cain. The ace right-hander pitched into the ninth inning on the way to winning his fifth straight start, leading the San Francisco Giants past the Cubs 2-1 on Saturday.Aubrey Huff drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 1 in the sixth, then San Francisco went ahead on an RBI fielder’s choice by Joaquin Arias on which Huff broke up a would-be double play. Huff produced his first RBI since April 16 and just his fifth this season after he spent a stint on the disabled list with anxiety disorder and is no longer a regular.

“That at-bat was huge,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “We got a run in. That’s what it takes to win ballgames.”

David DeJesus homered but it wasn’t enough to help the Cubs avoid their ninth straight road loss. It is their longest skid away from Wrigley Field since also dropping nine in a row from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10, 2006.Cain (6-2) was his dominant self on turn-back-the-clock to 1912 day, playing in the New York Giants’ white uniforms with dark blue pinstripes. The Cubs wore head-to-toe navy blue and the scoreboard was black-and-white sans video in the spirit of the Polo Grounds.

“I liked it, it was fun. It was actually one of the most comfortable throwback jerseys we’ve ever worn,” Cain said. “A lot of them are heavy and uncomfortable. It was nice to throw in, it wasn’t a big deal.”

Cain allowed a leadoff walk to Starlin Castro in the ninth before Bochy turned to Javier Lopez, who induced DeJesus’ double play before Sergio Romo recorded the final out for his first save in his first chance. Cain struck out seven and waved after walking off to a standing ovation after an impressive 117-pitch day. He moved his career record to 75-75, the right-hander’s first time at .500 since he was 17-17 in 2007.He stayed strong in the late innings, getting through a 1-2-3 seventh on seven pitches to put him at 94. He wanted to finish it, and nearly did.Melky Cabrera singled in the sixth for his majors-leading 81st hit for San Francisco, which began the day four games back of the first-place Dodgers for their closest spot to division-leading Los Angeles since May 8. The Dodgers won 6-2 at Colorado earlier Saturday.DeJesus hit a deep solo home run to right-center with two outs in the fourth to put the Cubs on the board. After “hours and hours of deliberating,” manager Dale Sveum dropped his primary leadoff hitter down to the third hole for the first time this year in an effort to spark the struggling Cubs.DeJesus’ second homer of the year was the 16th by an opponent this year at pitcher-friendly AT&T Park compared to just six by the Giants, who still won for the 10th time in their last 14 home games. The clout also snapped an 18-inning scoreless stretch by Cain against the Cubs.Matt Garza (2-4) struck out six and walked one in six innings, allowing two runs on five hits but lost his third straight start. The right-hander is winless in his last five outings since beating the Phillies on the road April 29.Tony Campana had two hits batting leadoff for the Cubs, who had a three-game winning streak snapped in Friday night’s 4-3 defeat. The run came on the heels of a 12-game losing streak.Angel Pagan singled in the sixth and matched a franchise record with a 26-game home hitting streak. Fitting he did so in a retro uniform, as he tied Mike Donlin’s mark set from Aug. 28, 1905, to May 5, 1906.Giants closer Santiago Casilla said he felt “bien, bien, bien” after injuring his right knee in the ninth inning Friday night. An MRI on his knee showed only a bruise and the right-hander was listed as day to day.

SAN FRANCISCO—The Cubs are not playing San Diego any more.Melky Cabrera isn’t slowing down even though the calendar has changed. The Giants slugger continues to be the hottest hitter in the National League and now he’s helping San Francisco get back into the division race.Cabrera had two hits to raise his average to .376, tying him with Paul Konerko of the White Sox for the highest mark in the majors while helping the Giants to a 4-3 win over the Cubs on Friday night. It comes on the heels of Cabrera’s outstanding May when he tied a San Francisco franchise record with 51 hits.More significantly, it helped the Giants pull within four games of first-place Los Angeles in the NL West after trailing by 7Ā½ games only six days ago.The Giants won for the fourth time in five games but it might have come at a price.Closer Santiago Casilla injured his right knee three batters after giving up a three-run home run to Alfonso Soriano in the ninth. Casilla left the game on his own power and was being examined by team doctors after the game.If Casilla is lost for any length of time it would be a blow to San Francisco’s bullpen which has already lost the team’s original closer, Brian Wilson, to a season-ending injury.Javier Lopez replaced Casilla and recorded the final two outs for his first save of the season. The ninth inning drama nearly overshadowed a stellar outing by pitcher Madison Bumgarner who pitched into the ninth inning to pick up his first win in nearly four weeks.Coming off one of his worst starts of the season, Bumgarner looked strong after overcoming some early struggles. He retired 17 of 20 batters during one stretch and carried a shutout into the ninth before tiring.Bumgarner (6-4) didn’t walk a batter and finished with a season-high 11 strikeouts.Former Cub Ryan Theriot added three hits and scored twice while Buster Posey had two RBIs to help the Giants improve to 4-1 on the current homestand. The Cubs put the go-ahead runs on the base in the ninth with one out but couldn’t complete the comeback and lost for the 15th time in their last 20 games. After Bumgarner gave up back-to-back singles to Starlin Castro and Joe Mather to open the inning, Casilla gave up Soriano’s home run that cut San Francisco’s lead to 4-3.Casilla retired Reed Johnson on a comebacker but allowed a double to Jeff Baker and an infield single to Darwin Barney. Lopez relieved Casilla and got Steve Clevenger to ground out to first then retired pinch-hitter David DeJesus on a fly out to enter.Cabrera continues to be the Giants most significant offseason acquisition. He singled as part of a two-run first inning, tripled in Theriot in the third and later scored on Posey’s single to right that gave the Giants a 4-0 lead. He also grounded into a double play and flew out to deep center in his other at-bats.That was more than enough support for Bumgarner, who scattered eight hits over eight innings to earn his first win since May 5.Paul Maholm wasn’t as fortunate. The Cubs’ lefty walked leadoff hitter Gregor Blanco in the first then gave up an RBI double to Theriot. Cabrera followed with a single before Posey’s sacrifice fly made it 2-0.Maholm (4-4) was tagged for two more in the third and left after giving up a one-out single to Brett Pill in the sixth. He struck out four and walked two.The Cubs, who were coming off a three-game sweep of San Diego, didn’t show much life offensively until Soriano’s home run in the ninth. The Cubs hit into two double plays and had a runner thrown out easily trying to steal second.Yet another ex Cub Angel Pagan singled in the third inning for San Francisco to extend his home hitting streak to 25 games, the longest in Giants franchise history.

NOTES—Injured Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval could begin a rehab assignment in the minors as soon as this weekend. Sandoval is expected to play four to five games with Class-A San Jose and will bat mostly from the left side while he continues to recover from surgery on his left hand. … The Cubs claimed RHP Jairo Asencio off waivers, the reliever’s third team this season. Sox get break, beat M’s 7-4 for ninth straight.

Gordon Beckham’s first multihomer game got the White Sox going Friday night. What they needed to finish off the Seattle Mariners and extend their winning streak to nine games was a big break in the eighth inning. It came when center fielder Michael Saunders dropped Paul Konerko’s fly ball for a two-base error, leading to three unearned runs and a 7-4 victory. The victory streak is the Sox longest since they won nine in a row in July 2010.

“Right now we’re on a good roll,” Beckham said. “It’s first of June. We’re doing the right things coming to work every day and hoping it’s enough. The last week and a half it’s been enough. You just can’t get complacent because this game will humble you really quickly.”

It sure did humble Saunders, who missed the routine fly ball after the Mariners had rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game.

“Just a lazy little line drive in to center. Just kind of moved on me last second, and I guess everyone saw I got hit in the face,” Saunders said. “I didn’t take my eye off it. I wasn’t running over there lazily. Just one of those things. … I feel horrible. This loss, I’m taking blame for this tonight.”

Beckham homered twice off Felix Hernandez and Adam Dunn also connected off the Mariners’ ace, who tweaked his back in the second inning after slipping on a pitch. The injury was not serious. With the game tied at 4-4 after the Mariners had rallied with a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, Konerko led off with a fly and the ball glanced off center fielder Saunders’ glove and then hit him in the face. With two outs and runners at the corners, Alexei Ramirez hit a slow grounder to shortstop Brendan Ryan and beat the throw for an infield single as pinch-runner Brent Lillibridge scored to break the tie. Alejandro De Aza added a two-run single.Addison Reed pitched the ninth for his seventh save in as many chances.Jesse Crain (1-0) got the win. Shawn Kelley (0-2) took the loss.Held to a puny single and two walks through the first six innings, the Mariners rallied with two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings to wipe out a 4-0 deficit.Jake Peavy didn’t allow a hit through four innings before Justin Smoak’s pop in front of the plate for a single leading off the fifth went for a single. Dustin Ackley opened the seventh with a double down the left-field line and Kyle Seager followed with a two-run homer.Seager had an RBI single off Matt Thornton in the eighth to bring the Mariners within 4-3 and Smoak delivered a game-tying single off Crain before the White Sox had a rally of their own.

“It’s nice to find a way to win that one after giving up the lead late to be able to bounce back and catch a break and then squeak one out,” Peavy said.

Beckham hit a two-run shot in the first. He and Dunn had back-to-back homers in the fifth.Peavy gave up three hits, two runs, walked three and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings.Beckham’s sixth homer was a liner down the left-field line that scored De Aza, who’d been hit by a pitch leading off the first. After Beckham connected with two outs in the fifth, Dunn sent one down the line in right for his 17th home run of the season.Hernandez gave up five hits and four runs in five innings with four walks and six strikeouts. When Smoak hit the high pop in front of the plate in the fifth, Pierzynski stepped out to make the catch with Peavy coming off the mound. The ball dropped just out of Pierzynski’s reach without him touching it for Seattle’s first hit.

NOTES—Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki returned to the leadoff spot for the first time this season after batting third in 52 games….John Danks, on the DL with a left shoulder strain, threw 20 pitches on the side and said he felt fine and was making progress. Danks will have another side session Sunday….A crowd of 19,168 was announced with a gametime temperature of 57 degrees…..Thornton’s appearance was his 425th in relief for the White Sox, setting a franchise record that he’d shared with Bobby Thigpen.
