Tigers long balls enough to take rubber match from Sox 3-1

DETROIT—Rick Porcello pitched impressively into the seventh inning and Detroit beat the White Sox 3-1 on Sunday. The Tigers left 12 runners on base, but solo homers by Austin Jackson, Prince Fielder and Andy Dirks provided all the scoring they needed.Fielder’s 432-foot shot to right-center — his fourth homer of the year — broke a 1-all tie in the third. Jackson homered for the Tigers in the first after Adam Dunn gave the Sox an early lead with a solo shot in the top half.Dirks batted second and fellow outfielder Brennan Boesch was dropped to eighth. The Tigers had 10 hits but could never quite break the game open. Alex Avila hit into a double play with runners on first and third to end the fifth. Dirks popped out to end the sixth with runners on second and third. With the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Boesch hit a routine fly.Dirks finally added an insurance run with his homer to right in the eighth.Porcello (3-2) allowed a run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. Four relievers finished for the Tigers, with Jose Valverde pitching the ninth for his fifth save. The Tigers were held to three or fewer runs for the fourth time in six games.Dylan Axelrod (0-1) allowed two runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old made his first start of the season for the White Sox, part of a pitching shuffle that moved Chris Sale from starter to closer. With a doubleheader coming up Monday at Cleveland, The Sox optioned Axelrod to Triple-A Charlotte after the game. Left-hander Eric Stults will come up from the minors to start the second game Monday, and the White Sox are also expected to add a reliever.Axelrod struck out four and walked two.The first two games of this series were won on two-run homers in the ninth inning — by Detroit’s Jhonny Peralta on Friday night and Dunn on Saturday. All the runs in the finale came via the long ball, but Valverde held onto the lead this time after allowing Dunn’s homer a day earlier.Valverde gave up a hit and a walk but struck out Gordon Beckham to end it.Dunn’s solo shot in the first was his ninth homer of the season, but that was all the scoring for the White Sox. Porcello struck out five and walked two. Jackson led off the bottom of the first with his fourth homer of the year.Dayan Viciedo left in the seventh after being hit in the right elbow with a pitch. X-rays were negative and he is day to day.

NOTES—Detroit optioned RHP Brayan Villarreal to Triple-A Toledo to make room for RHP Doug Fister (0-0), who will return from a left side strain Monday night and start at Seattle against Blake Beavan (1-3) of the Mariners…..Stults (0-0) will face Cleveland’s Josh Tomlin (1-2) on Monday after  Phil Humber (1-1) takes on Zach McAllister (0-0) in the opener of the doubleheader…..Dunn’s homer was his 374th, tying Rocky Colavito for 69th on the career list…..Leyland won his 1,602nd game, tying Fred Clarke for 16th.

Capuano pitches and hits Dodgers past Cubs

Chris Capuano beat the Cubs with his bat and his arm on Saturday. Guess which one he’ll remember more? Capuano threw seven shutout innings and drove in two runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-1 win over the Cubs.Capuano (4-0) held the Cubs to three hits and struck out seven, extending his scoreless innings streak to 18 2-3. His two-run double in the second gave him his first RBI since Aug. 24, 2007.There are plenty of reasons to be excited for the first-place Dodgers, who avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season. It’s just the second time since 1988 that Los Angeles has won at least 18 of its first 27 games.Los Angeles started 19-8 in 2009, the last year the Dodgers won the NL West.Cubs starter Chris Volstad (0-4) fell to 0-9 over 17 starts dating to July 10. He allowed four hits and five runs over five innings, walking three and striking out one.During Volstad’s long winless streak, his Achilles’ heel has been an inability to avoid big innings. The problem surfaced again on Saturday when his leadoff walk to Andre Ethier in the second led to a sacrifice fly.Later that inning, Volstad left a pitch up to Capuano, who laced it into the gap in right-center for a two-run double.Capuano, who was a capable hitting pitcher before missing two seasons with an elbow injury, had gone just 5 for 79 without an RBI since returning to the majors in 2010.Capuano is off to his best start since winning his first five decisions in 2007 with the Brewers. He’s hoping this season turns out better after he lost his final 12 decisions that year. The lefty has won seven of his last nine starts against the Cubs, who barely threatened him on Saturday. The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the first, but Capuano struck out Alfonso Soriano and Ian Stewart looking. The Cubs got just three base runners against Capuano over his last six innings and didn’t get another runner past first base.Starlin Castro singled three times for the Cubs, but committed his eighth error, the most in the majors.Matt Kemp went 0 for 3 but drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.Kemp’s batting average dropped below .400 for the first time since April 10. The major-league home run leader hasn’t gone deep in the Dodgers’ last four games, his longest drought of the season.Dee Gordon doubled home Matt Treanor in the fifth. Gordon also singled and stole his 12th base of the season.
NOTES—Volstad started in place of Matt Garza, who is battling a virus. Garza’s start was pushed back to Sunday, though Cubs manager Dale Sveum said that possibility is “pretty iffy.” Garza’s start may be skipped altogether. If Garza can’t pitch Sunday, LHP Travis Wood will be recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take his turn in the rotation. Wood was in the Cubs’ clubhouse on Saturday…..Sveum said that utility player Jeff Baker has the same illness as Garza and was unavailable for Saturday’s game…..Former Cub Ted Lilly was ejected from the Dodgers’ dugout by home plate umpire Tim Timmons during the top of the fifth.

This time Sox win in 9th on homer. Dunn’s long blast beats slumping Valverde

DETROIT—Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer deep into the right-field seats off Jose Valverde in the ninth inning and the White Sox turned the tables on Detroit, beating the Tigers 3-2 Saturday.Detroit won 5-4 on Friday night when Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run shot with one out in the ninth. There was also one out when Dunn hit his 422-foot drive off Valverde (2-1).Nate Jones (1-0) got the win and Addison Reed came on to strike out Austin Jackson with runners on second and third for the final out. It was Reed’s first career save.Detroit’s Delmon Young went hitless in his first game back from a seven-day suspension following his April 27 arrest in New York.It was Valverde’s second blown save of the season. He was perfect in 49 chances in 2011.Dunn’s homer was his eighth of the season. Paul Konerko also went deep. The Tigers scratched out their two runs in the second on RBI singles by Andy Dirks and Jackson. The White Sox trailed 2-0 before Konerko’s solo shot in the seventh. Alejandro De Aza started the ninth with a single and a stolen base. He was sacrificed to third and Dunn – always a strikeout risk – made solid contact to put the Sox ahead.Jones had pitched the bottom of the eighth, and Hector Santiago came on to try to close it out, but a walk and a double put Chicago’s slim lead in jeopardy. Reed, who hasn’t allowed a run this season, got the best of Jackson to preserve the win.Gavin Floyd allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings for the White Sox.Floyd was unlucky in the second, allowing an RBI single to Dirks on a slow grounder that snuck between third baseman Brent Morel and shortstop Alexei Ramirez.Jackson’s run-scoring hit actually deflected off Morel and past Ramirez, who looked as though he might have been in position to keep the ball at least in the infield and prevent the runner on second from scoring.Floyd retired 12 in a row starting in the third inning. In his last three starts, he’s allowed four runs in 21 innings.Detroit’s Max Scherzer yielded a run and four hits in seven innings. He struck out nine without a walk. Showing none of the control trouble that plagued him in a seven-walk performance last weekend against the Yankees, Scherzer retired the first 11 White Sox before Dunn lined a single to right. The Sox second hit nearly ended Scherzer’s outing. A.J. Pierzynski’s line drive up the middle hit Scherzer’s right foot during the pitcher’s follow through. The right-hander picked up the ball and threw wildly to first, and the play went for an infield single and an error, with Pierzynski ending up on second.Scherzer stayed in the game and got out of the inning on a flyout and two strikeouts. He allowed a single to De Aza in the sixth – then promptly picked him off first. Konerko broke up the shutout an inning later with a homer to left.Young was reinstated from the restricted list Friday after his suspension, but he didn’t play that night. He received mostly cheers and a few scattered boos from the home crowd for his first plate appearance.

NOTES—The Tigers sent OF Brad Eldred outright to Triple-A Toledo, a day after designating him for assignment to make room for Young’s return. … Konerko is second among active players with 43 home runs against the Tigers. Jim Thome has 66. … Detroit RHP Rick Porcello (2-2) faces Chicago RHP Dylan Axelrod (0-0) in Sunday’s series finale.

Cubs hold off Dodgers as Maholm wins third.

Paul Maholm looked shaky in his first two starts of the season, continuing a terrible stretch that started last year.A couple weeks later, he’s on quite a little roll. aholm pitched six crisp innings for his third consecutive win and the Cubs held on for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. Maholm (3-2) allowed one run and three hits while improving to 1-5 with a 4.91 ERA in nine career starts against Los Angeles. The left-hander has won his past three outings after dropping his first two, allowing three runs over 18 1/3 innings during the streak.Matt Kemp hit a run-scoring triple and scored on Andre Ethier’s sacrifice fly to get Los Angeles within one in the eighth. But Kerry Wood got Juan Rivera to fly out to end the inning. Rafael Dolis then finished for his second save in three chances, taking advantage of his first opportunity since Carlos Marmol was removed from the closer’s role.David DeJesus and Alfonso Soriano each had three hits to help the Cubs rebound from a disappointing loss at Cincinnati. Pinch-hitter Joe Mather homered in the sixth.Jerry Hairston hit a solo homer and a run-scoring triple for NL West-leading Los Angeles, which has dropped three of four. Chad Billingsley (2-2) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.Sveum announced Friday he had decided to try a committee of relievers in the closer spot, making the move one day after Marmol walked three and failed to record an out while blowing a save opportunity in a 4-3 loss to the Reds. The erratic right-hander has two blown saves in four chances this season and a 6.23 ERA in 12 games overall.
“It just got to that point where we got to get him productive in some role and he was fine with it and understood,” Sveum said. “Hopefully we can get him going to where give him another chance and get him going to where he can get back in that role.”
The new approach worked out on the first day, but just barely. The Cubs carried a 4-1 lead into the seventh but Ethier greeted James Russell with a leadoff double and scored on Hairston’s two-out rope into right field. Hairston hustled around to third and A.J. Ellis followed with a walk against Shawn Camp, leaving runners on the corners. But Camp responded by striking out pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu on four pitches in the veteran’s first plate appearance with Los Angeles. Maholm struck out four and walked none in his third consecutive sharp outing. He was struck on the right leg by Dee Gordon’s sixth-inning comebacker, but remained in the game after a few warmup pitches.Maholm became the first big league starter to win three straight games after a winless stretch of nine or more starts since Houston’s Brett Myers last season, according to STATS, LLC. Maholm was 0-7 with a 7.03 ERA in nine previous starts before he beat Cincinnati on April 21. Abreu signed with the Dodgers on Friday, insisting he was OK with a reserve role after years as a regular with the Angels, Philadelphia and the New York Yankees. He stayed in the game in left field after he struck out and lined out to right with a runner on first to end the game.

NOTES—Matt Garza (virus) was pushed back to Sunday and RHP Chris Volstad will start in his place on Saturday on regular rest….Bryan LaHair singled in the seventh inning to extend his streak of reaching safely to 22 consecutive games….Infielder Justin Sellers was optioned to the Triple-A Albuquerque to make room for Abreu on the roster…..Sveum was ejected in the ninth inning for arguing balls and strikes with plate umpire Marty Foster.

PHILADELPHIA—Spencer Hawes scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and hit the go-ahead jumper late in the fourth quarter to help the Philadelphia 76ers rally to beat the Bulls 79-74 on Friday night and take a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference playoff series.Hawes scored 10 clutch points in the fourth to give the eighth-seeded Sixers the surprising series lead. Game 4 is Sunday in Philadelphia.Already playing the rest of the series without reigning MVP Derrick Rose, the Bulls got another scare in the third quarter when Joakim Noah left with a sprained left ankle. Noah, who scored 12 points, returned in the fourth quarter and mostly hobbled around the court. With Rose out, the Sixers believed they were in perfect position to knock off the top-seeded Bulls and build a series lead on their home court.

Sox fall in 9th on Peralta HR

DETROIT — Jhonny Peralta’s first home run of the season was worth the wait.Peralta hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 win over the White Sox on Friday night. The Tigers trailed by a run when Alex Avila hit a one-out single, and Peralta ended it with a homer to right-center.”It’s the best moment you can feel,” Peralta said. “The first home run this year — and walk-off. It’s not bad, huh?”

Chicago led 4-2 after Gordon Beckham’s tiebreaking two-run shot in the seventh, but Detroit got a run back in the eighth on an RBI single by Miguel Cabrera. Matt Thornton (1-1) got the last out of the eighth but gave up the winning homer to Peralta.

The White Sox are moving Chris Sale from the rotation back to the bullpen to be their closer, but he’s not expected to pitch again until next week.

“With everything going on today, we looked at the way they were lining up and went with Matt,” Robin Ventura said.

Jose Valverde (2-0) pitched the top of the ninth for the win.

Chicago starter Jake Peavy allowed three runs and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings, but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead for him.

Detroit outfielder Delmon Young was reinstated Friday from the restricted list following a seven-day suspension, but he didn’t play. Young was arrested last week and accused of yelling anti-Semitic epithets in New York.

The Tigers didn’t need him. Avila hit his fourth homer of the year for Detroit, and Peralta’s opposite-field shot gave the Tigers the victory.

“I didn’t hit it too much to right field last year, so this year it feels really good for me to hit the ball to right field,” Peralta said. “I don’t worry about the homer. I try to hit the ball, make good contact. … When you make good contact, the ball goes no matter what.”

Beckham had three hits for the White Sox.

Detroit rookie Drew Smyly allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven.

“I’m just happy I’m staying consistent. It’s a long, long season,” Smyly said. “I feel like all my pitches pretty much, expect my changeup — I’ve been working on that a lot — but they’ve been right where I want them. I can throw them for strikes, I can throw them where I want them.”

Smyly hadn’t allowed more than a run in any of his first four starts, and he had a 2-1 lead after Avila’s solo shot in the fourth. But Alexei Ramirez led off the sixth with a triple and scored on Adam Dunn sacrifice fly to tie it.Octavio Dotel retired the first two Chicago hitters in the seventh in short order, but Brent Morel beat out a slow grounder for an infield single, and Beckham’s second homer of the year made it 4-2.

Peavy, coming off back-to-back complete games, fell four outs short this time. He allowed an RBI single to Cabrera with his 122nd and final pitch, and Thornton came on and got Prince Fielder on a grounder to the mound, with part of the Detroit slugger’s broken bat hitting the screen behind the plate.

“I hate that I couldn’t get out of that inning, because that would have made it easier for Matt,” Peavy said.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Raburn. Chicago answered in the third with an RBI double from Beckham.

NOTESetroit RHP Doug Fister is expected to start Monday at Seattle after missing a month with a left side strain. Fister left his first start of the season April 7 in the fourth inning. … Paul Konerko had two hits, giving him sole possession of fourth place on Chicago’s career list with 2,009 – two more than Eddie Collins. … Tigers RHP Max Scherzer (1-3) faces Chicago RHP Gavin Floyd (2-3) on Saturday.

Danks continues to struggle vs Tribe. Sox fall 7-5

For Jason Kipnis hit a three-run homer and had a career-high four RBIs, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 7-5 victory over the White Sox on Thursday night.Kipnis, a native Northbrook and an Alum of Glenbrook North, also tripled in a run, walked and scored twice. He’s had a hit in all five of his career games in his hometown, going 8 for 18 with three extra-base hits and five RBIs.

“I’m pretty happy that it came in Chicago,” Kipnis said. “I had people here, so it was cool to see. It’s good to play well, but it’s also nice to play well in front of friends and family.”

Justin Masterson (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, holding the White Sox to three runs over 6 1-3 innings. Masterson improved to 3-1 at U.S. Cellular Field and hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his six career road starts against the White Sox.

“They’re a good hitting team, but for some reason they’re nice enough to not hit when I go out there and pitch, so I appreciate it,” Masterson said.

Chris Perez got the last two outs for his ninth save in 10 chances, striking out A.J. Pierzynski with a man on, then getting Alex Rios on a roller to second. That prompted Perez to pump his fist and yell on the mound, something to which Rios took exception.

“I don’t know what was wrong with him,” Rios said. “He just started yelling for no reason. He just started yelling, and that was it.”

Perez said his actions weren’t directed at Rios..

“I yelled like I usually do, so maybe he thought I was yelling at him or something, but I wasn’t,” Perez said. “I was yelling at my teammates, happy for the win.

“I didn’t hear what he said. He did say something. It might have been in Spanish.”

Asdrubal Cabrera also homered for the Indians, who took two of three from the White Sox and have won four straight road series to begin a season for the first time since 1961. Cleveland’s 9-3 road record is tied with Texas for the best in the majors. The Sox couldn’t overcome another rough night for John Danks (2-4), who allowed seven runs, six earned, over seven innings. He’s allowed seven or more runs in back-to-back outings for the first time in his career.Danks, who ranks third among American League lefties with 50 wins since 2008, has a 6.51 ERA through his first six starts. He also committed two errors and has three this year, matching his total for his first five big league seasons.Danks fell to 0-5 with a 6.51 ERA in seven career starts against Cleveland at U.S. Cellular Field. The Indians were clinging to a 4-3 lead when Kipnis connected with two out in the seventh, sending a 3-1 pitch from Danks over the wall in right.Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer in the ninth, his seventh of the season and third in four games. Alejandro De Aza had three hits, including a two-run single in the fifth that trimmed Cleveland’s lead to 3-2.Johnny Damon led off the two-run third with a double for his first hit with the Indians, and scored on Kipnis’ triple off the center-field wall. Cabrera singled home Kipnis. Damon’s run was the 1,644th of his career, breaking a tie with Jimmy Ryan for 35th on the all-time list. The Indians have had at least a share of the lead in the AL Central for 10 straight days, their longest stretch in first place since June 29-July 9, 2011. Cleveland has won 12 of its last 18 games.

NOTES—Acta gave Travis Hafner the night off after he was hit on the right knee by a Phil Humber pitch during Wednesday’s 6-3 win. … Damon started at designated hitter after leaving Wednesday’s game – his Indians debut – with what the team called “general cramping.” … The start of the game was delayed by 19 minutes because of storms moving through the Chicago area. … Dunn’s homer snapped streak of 17 2-3 scoreless innings by the Cleveland bullpen.

Marmol melt down! Cubs blow 3-0 lead in 9th, lose to Reds in tenth.

CINCINNATI—An unprecedented matchup of birthday-celebrating starters came down to the bullpens. Carlos Marmol got a little wild, lost a three-run lead and, perhaps, his job as well. The Cincinnati Reds scored three runs in the ninth off Marmol to tie it, and Scott Rolen hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning for a 4-3 victory over the Cubs and a split of their two-game series. The Reds needed a lot of help to pull it out, and got it.Marmol spoiled a big moment for Ryan Dempster, who returned from the disabled list and pitched eight shutout innings on his 35th birthday. He allowed only three hits and was in line to get his first win since Aug. 11.Dempster got the better of Homer Bailey, who turned 26 on Thursday. It was the first time in major-league history that both starters were celebrating a birthday. Both pitchers signed baseballs for the Hall of Fame.

“That’s something neat,” Dempster said.

The Reds stood at the plate and watched Marmol self-destruct in the ninth. He walked Willie Harris and Joey Votto on nine pitches to open the inning. An error by Ian Stewart — the third baseman rushed trying to turn a double play — let in a run.Jay Bruce singled to load the bases, and Marmol walked Ryan Ludwick to force in a run that made it 3-2 and ended the closer’s outing. Rafael Dolis (1-2) relieved and got a double play that left it tied at 3.Marmol threw 18 pitches, only six of them strikes.

“Sometimes he’s throwing strikes, and then he’s practically unhittable,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “The key is to swing at strikes and make him throw balls. We don’t have a whole lot of guys who hit him well.”

Marmol has blown three of his five save chances, walking 12 in 8 2/3 innings. Manager Dale Sveum said after the game that he’ll consider moving him out of the closer’s role.

“You have a game like that — I’m embarrassed right now,” Marmol said.

Another error helped the Reds win it. Zack Cozart singled in the 10th off Dolis, who then threw wildly to first base on Chris Heisey’s sacrifice attempt. Rolen followed with his sacrifice fly to deep right field. Logan Ondrusek (2-0) pitched the 10th.The bad ninth inning spoiled the Cubs best power display of the season. Starlin Castro, Bryan LaHair and Geovany Soto hit homers off Bailey, who lasted six innings. LaHair has provided the bulk of the Cubs’ power this season, hitting seven of their 14 homers. The Cubs hit only nine in April, fewest in the majors, but had five in the two games at Great American Ball Park — all of them solo shots. The Cubs now have homered in a season-high four consecutive games.Dempster’s long winless streak — now 13 games — is partly due to a lack of support. He had allowed only three earned runs in three starts this season before hurting his thigh, but the Cubs scored a total of four runs in those games. He lowered his ERA to 0.95 this season with the eight shutout innings. It was the second year in a row that he pitched well on his birthday and failed to get a win. Last year, he allowed only one run over seven innings and got a no-decision in a 4-1 win over the Dodgers. The Cubs also activated reliever Kerry Wood off the disabled list before the game. He had been sidelined with fatigue in his pitching shoulder.

NOTES—Paul Maholm will start Friday against L.A. He’s 0-5 in eight career starts against the Dodgers with a 5.33 ERA…..Johnny Cueto starts Cincinnati’s series in Pittsburgh on Friday. He’s 10-3 career against the Pirates, including 6-1 in eight games at PNC Park…..The Cubs optioned starter Randy Wells and reliever John Maine to Triple-A Iowa…..LaHair has hit safely in his past nine games and reached base safely in 21 consecutive games

Samardzija slows Reds lineup, Cubs beat Reds 3-1

CINCINNATI—Jeff Samardzija didn’t have a problem breaking a sweat. Samardzija pitched into the eighth inning on a warm, humid night that was to his liking Wednesday, keeping his fastball around 96 mph the whole way, and the power-challenged Cubs hit a pair of homers for a 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.A warm front moved through the area on Tuesday night, setting off rounds of thunderstorms that forced postponement for the opening game of the series. When Samardzija took the mound a day later, it was 87 degrees for the first pitch.Perfect for Samardzija (3-1), who grew up in Indiana and is used to heat and humidity.

“It feels nice to have warm weather, I’ll tell you that much,” he said. “Late in the game, it keeps your arm going. It’s amazing what a difference it makes.”

The right-hander allowed only three hits in 7 2/3 innings, leaving after giving up a two-out walk. He threw 94 pitches — 60 for strikes — and struck out seven.Samardzija spent most of his first four seasons in the Cubs bullpen. He won a spot in the rotation during spring training and has pitched well enough to keep it.

“It seems like things keep getting more and more important,” he said. “It was important to have a good spring, then important to have the good start. It’ll be important to finish strong.”

Bryan LaHair and Ian Stewart hit solo homers off Bronson Arroyo (1-1) for only the Cubs’ third multihomer game of the season. They managed only nine homers in April, fewest in the majors.LaHair’s leadoff homer in the second gave him six overall. Stewart’s was his second. The third baseman also had a nice barehanded play to rob Drew Stubbs of a hit in the fourth.

“I take a lot of pride in my defense,” he said. “Making a play for me sometimes tops a hit.”

Samardzija contained Jay Bruce, holding the NL’s player of the week to a harmless double. Carlos Marmol retired all three batters in the ninth for his second save in four chances, finishing off the combined three-hitter. The Cubs have had only six save opportunities this season, underscoring their early struggles. It was the second straight impressive start for Samardzija, who struck out a career-high nine Cardinals in 6 2/3 innings on May 24. He’s made 10 career starts in the majors.

“He usually doesn’t have that command or control,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “He was throwing 95-98 at the start and he was still at 95-96 when he left. Tonight wasn’t us, it was him.”

Bruce went 10 for 21 last week with homers in four straight games. He needed a homer on Wednesday to tie the club record — Ted Kluszewski, Johnny Bench, Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn all homered in five straight. Bruce flied out, grounded out and doubled. LaHair led off the second inning with his sixth of the season off Arroyo, who gave up a club-record 46 homers last season when he pitched with mononucleosis and a sore lower back. He’s been better so far this season, giving up only two homers in his four previous starts. Baker said before the game that Arroyo has been bothered by a sore lower back again. Arroyo got an extra day to rest when the series opener was postponed.Stewart homered in the fourth inning, matching the Cubs’ season high for homers in one game. They put together three singles for another run in the sixth off Arroyo, the run scoring on Geovany Soto’s hit. Arroyo gave up nine hits and a walk in six innings, throwing 99 pitches. The Reds scored in the fourth when Brandon Phillips got caught in a rundown and extended it long enough to let Joey Votto to cross home plate.

NOTES—The final game of the series will feature two starting pitchers celebrating their birthdays. The Cubs plan to activate RH Ryan Dempster from the 15-day DL, where he’s been letting his strained right thigh heal. Dempster turns 35 on Thursday. Cincinnati will start Homer Bailey, who turns 26. … Tuesday’s rainout will likely be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, Aug. 18 during the Cubs’ only other visit. … Arroyo picked Starlin Castro off second base in the first inning. … Cubs 2B Blake DeWitt made a diving stop and flip to second base to start a slick double play in the fifth. … The Reds signed former Cubs and A’s reliever Michael Wuertz to a minor league deal. He’s working out at the team’s spring training complex in Arizona.

Tribe overcome missed chances, beat Sox 6-3

The Indians felt it was just a matter of time before they put some runs on the board.Carlos Santana and Travis Hafner hit home runs to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 6-3 victory against the White Sox on Wednesday night.Santana hit his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth inning that landed well behind the Indians’ bullpen in right field. Hafner added a two-run shot in the ninth.Jack Hannahan doubled home Michael Brantley with the go-ahead run in the eighth off Addison Reed. White Sox starter Phil Humber, pitching less than 24 hours after his wife gave birth to their first child, held Cleveland to three runs in six innings, making key pitches to escape a couple of jams. He was wild all night, walking a career-high six and hitting another.

“I didn’t feel great,” Humber said. “I didn’t have great stuff. I’m not going to blame it on lack of sleep or anything like that. Having a new baby is a blessing.”

Johnny Damon went 0 for 3 with a walk in his Indians’ debut, starting in left field and leading off. The 38-year-old Damon is with his seventh organization in 18 big league seasons, and is 277 hits shy of 3,000. Damon was replaced in the sixth inning because of what the team called “general cramping” but is expected to be available for Thursday’s series finale. Four Cleveland relievers combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Josh Tomlin, extending the bullpen’s shutout streak to 15 2/3 innings. Joe Smith (1-0) picked up the victory and Chris Perez pitched the ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.

“Once you come out of a game like that, you know that [the bullpen is] going to be lights out, no matter what,” Tomlin said. “If we can give the ball to them with the lead or a tie ballgame in the seventh or eighth inning, we feel pretty good about our chances.”

Adam Dunn reached base three times and hit his sixth home run. Alexei Ramirez added a two-run single. Will Ohman (0-1) took the loss in relief. After throwing the 21st perfect game in big-league history at Seattle on April 21, Humber allowed a career-high nine runs in five innings against Boston on April 26.
