Rose sits again, Celtics take advantage and beat Bulls 95-91

BOSTON—Paul Pierce has been around long enough to know what Rajon Rondo recorded a triple-double with 32 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds in a 95-91 Boston Celtics victory over the Bulls, who were without star guard Derrick Rose.Running the Celtics’ offense smoothly without having to worry about covering the reigning MVP Rose, Rondo helped Boston rebound from a miserable loss in Toronto on Friday.Kevin Garnett added 13 points and 12 rebounds, reserve JaJuan Johnson had 12 points and Ray Allen 11 for the Celtics, who snapped a two-game skid. Rondo had season highs in both points and assists. The win came after what Doc Rivers called an “awful” showing in an 86-74 loss at Toronto. Rivers was very frustrated after that game and spoke about how it was “un-Celtic.” C.J. Watson, who started in Rose’s spot, scored 22 points for the Bulls, whose win streak ended at five in the finale of a 6-3 road trip. Carlos Boozer also scored 22 and pulled down seven rebounds, while Joakim Noah had 16 points and nine boards. Rose missed his second straight game with what Tom Thibodeau called “stiffness” in his back and is expected to see a specialist Monday as the team returned to Chicago after the Boston game. He originally suffered the injury earlier in the week and was limited in Wednesday’s win at New Orleans before missing Friday’s victory over Charlotte.Rondo seemed to roam free on offense for most of the game, driving the lane for easy baskets, taking open jumpers and setting up teammates. He had 28 points, nine assists and six rebounds entering the final quarter. But that may not have stopped Rondo on Sunday. Rondo declined to speak to the media after his stellar effort. The Bulls trailed by 14 with just over five minutes to play, but they turned up the pressure defensively and made a late run, pulling to 91-88 on Luol Deng’s two free throws with 1:23 to go.After a turnover by Pierce, Watson was short on a 3-point attempt and Rondo grabbed the rebound with 21.5 seconds to go. He was fouled and hit both free throws.Watson missed the second of two free throws and Rondo grabbed his 10th rebound with 9.8 seconds on the clock. The Bulls had closed the score to 72-68 early in the final quarter before Allen and Pierce nailed 3s during a 10-3 run that helped Boston take charge. Rondo had assists on both 3-pointers, driving the lane to collapse the defense before kicking the ball outside. Rondo had fast-break alley-oop lobs for dunks on consecutive possessions to Johnson and Chris Wilcox that made it 86-72 midway through the fourth. The Celtics had opened a 59-50 third-quarter edge on Rondo’s free throw before the Bulls scored eight of the next 10 points, closing the gap to three. But Boston improved its advantage to 72-66 after three on Rondo’s two free throws with 3.3 seconds left.Boston held the Bulls to 34 percent shooting in the first half and led 48-43 at intermission. The Bulls stayed close behind 11 offensive rebounds. Part of the reason for Boston’s quick start may have been the poor showing in Toronto. It was just the third time in club history that the Celtics scored below 75 points and the first in 11 years.

NOTES—Boston was without F Brandon Bass and F/C Jermaine O’Neal. Rivers said Bass’ knee “swelled up” after Friday’s game and that “he’ll be out probably 10 days to two weeks.” Rivers said O’Neal had knee and shoulder injuries….During his pregame press briefing, Rivers said his former assistant Thibodeau is somewhat like Patriots coach Bill Belichick because “he works so hard and he expects everybody to work as hard as him, which is impossible.” Rivers recalled a story about how Thibodeau had two teams chasing him before helping persuade him to take the Bulls job. “He actually had two jobs and I grabbed him by the shoulder and said, `Are you kidding me? You have a chance to coach Derrick Rose and you’re thinking about another job?’ Are you nuts? I actually said, `If it’s a penny to go there or $10 million to go to the other place, take the penny. In the long run you’ll be able to coach.”‘

NU’s three game winning streak ends against Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE—Robbie Hummel scored a season-high 27 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds Sunday as Purdue snapped Northwestern’s three-game winning streak with an 87-77 victory.Hummel was one of five Boilermakers to score in double figures. D.J. Byrd added 20 points and Ryne Smith contributed 14 for Purdue (16-9, 6-6 Big Ten).Terone Johnson scored 11 points and Kelsey Barlow added 10 for Purdue.John Shurna scored 30 points for the Wildcats (15-9, 5-7) and Reggie Hearn had 16, including 11 in the second half. Hearn’s final basket, a layup with 10:13 to go, gave Northwestern a 48-47 lead. But Johnson’s 3-pointer put the Boilermakers ahead to stay 60-57 with 6:21 remaining.

Michigan hands Illini another loss

ANN ARBOR—Evan Smotrycz broke up a pass at one end of the court, then Tim Hardaway Jr. rattled in a shot from the baseline at the other.Michigan’s slumping sophomores were finally giving the Wolverines a lift again. Hardaway scored 15 points and Smotrycz added 13, helping No. 22 Michigan remain unbeaten at home with a 70-61 win over Illinois on Sunday. Freshman Trey Burke added 14 points for the Wolverines, but it was Smotrycz and Hardaway who came through with the most encouraging performances of the day, especially in the first half.Hardaway entered the game shooting 19 percent from 3-point range in Big Ten play. Smotrycz wasn’t much better at 24 percent, but they both went 2 for 2 from beyond the arc in the first half.

“When your two worst 3-point shooters go 4 for 4 — Hardaway and Smotrycz — in the first half, it’s a killer for you,” Illinois coach Bruce Weber said. “They have so many other weapons and they spread you out.”

Brandon Paul led Illinois (16-9, 5-7) with 21 points and Tyler Griffey added 18. The Fighting Illini have lost six of seven and are on the NCAA tournament bubble despite wins over Ohio State and Michigan State. Hardaway’s poor outside shooting and Smotrycz’s ineffectiveness have been concerns for Michigan, but both players were sharp Sunday, especially early. Hardaway gave the Wolverines a 10-8 lead with a 3-pointer from the left wing, and his shot from the baseline — after Smotrycz’s defensive play — made it 25-20. Smotrycz made a backdoor pass to Matt Vogrich for an easy basket, then added a 3-pointer of his own to make it 30-21. Michigan (19-7, 9-4) was ahead 37-31 at halftime and pushed the lead to double digits early in the second. Hardaway was 8 for 35 from the field in his previous three games, and Smotrycz had scored in double digits only once this calendar year.Smotrycz and Hardaway combined for 22 points in the first half on 7-of-10 shooting. It was 53-44 after Paul made a 3-pointer for Illinois, but Vogrich connected from long distance for the Wolverines and Jordan Morgan scored to put Michigan up by 14 points.Illinois went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead in half, but Morgan broke up Paul’s pass into the post, and Hardaway made a layup in transition to make it 60-51. Michigan has won consecutive games for the first time since beating Wisconsin and Northwestern at home in mid-January. The Wolverines improved to 14-0 at Crisler Center this season.Michigan trails Big Ten co-leaders Michigan State and Ohio State by a half-game and will try to avenge a January loss to the Buckeyes next weekend in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines don’t play again until then, so the home crowd began chanting “Beat Ohio!” at the end of the game. Illinois center Meyers Leonard, who at 7-foot-1 had at least a 5-inch height advantage over every Michigan starter, was in foul trouble early and finished with five points, although he did have 12 rebounds. The Illini had 14 offensive rebounds to Michigan’s six but couldn’t take advantage.Illinois shot 9 of 29 in the second half and finished at 39 percent for the game. Zack Novak had 12 points and nine rebounds for Michigan.

Phoenix is in eighth place in the West, two points ahead of Colorado, which lost to St. Louis 3-2 in overtime earlier Saturday. The Blackhawks lost their eighth straight overall — their longest skid since the 2007-08 season — and 10th in a row on the road. “They came out harder than we did and we can’t let that happen,” said Jonathan Toews. “Right now, we need to do something that will make us feel good about ourselves.”

After allowing 10 goals in their previous two games, the Blackhawks gave up two in the first 5:58.Vrbata scored his 26th goal of the season just over 3 minutes into the game. Coming from behind the net, Vrbata’s wraparound deflected off Chicago’s Sami Lepisto and behind goalie Ray Emery.Less than 3 minutes later, Gordon, standing just to the right of Emery, slammed in his seventh of the season. The Blackhawks tested Smith midway through the second period. After taking a shot in the mask from Patrick Sharp, Smith shook off the impact and stopped Toews twice in close within seconds.Chipchura scored midway through the second period for the final margin. With a 2-on-1 against rookie defenseman Dylan Olsen, Chipchura converted a perfect pass from Gilbert Brule into his second goal of the season. From that point, Smith stopped 16 shots in the final period, and the Coyotes finished the game by playing air-tight hockey.Things do not get easier from here for the Blackhawks. Their current nine-game trip continues with stops in Nashville, New York against the Rangers and in Columbus. They do not return to the United Center until Feb. 19 to face St. Louis.

Hawks free-fall continues on winless road trip as Sharks win 5-3

SAN JOSE—Benn Ferriero and Jamie McGinn gave the San Jose Sharks just the spark they needed before heading out on a lengthy trip. Ferriero scored the tiebreaking goal shortly after a fight by McGinn helped change the momentum and McGinn added his own power-play goal to send the Sharks off on their nine-game trip on a winning note, beating the Blackhawks 5-3 on Friday.Joe Thornton, Dan Boyle and Justin Braun also scored to help the Sharks avoid losing three straight games in regulation for the first time since October. Brent Burns added three assists.Antti Niemi made 30 saves to win for the fifth time in eight starts against the Blackhawks since leaving them for San Jose before last season.Marcus Kruger scored two goals and Bryan Bickell also scored for the Blackhawks, who have lost seven straight games, including the first five on a nine-game trip. The Hawks have also lost nine straight road games. They are struggling on their longest trip in 18 years, the Sharks are about to embark on a long trip of their own. With a tennis tournament and Disney on Ice coming to San Jose, the Sharks head out on a nine-game trip that begins Sunday in St. Louis. After blowing leads of 2-0 and 3-2, it looked as if the Sharks could have a long flight ahead of them. But the team seemed to wake up after McGinn fought Bickell following a hard hit on Marc-Edouard Vlasic. MGinn didn’t even see the hit but reacted to the crowd noise and challenged Bickell — his former teammate in juniors — to the fight. On the next shift, Ferriero drove to the front of the net and tipped in a pass from Brad Winchester for his seventh goal of the season. It’s the fifth time Ferriero has scored to give the Sharks the lead, including three in the third period. McGinn added a power-play goal with 5:56 remaining, San Jose’s third tally with the man advantage against Corey Crawford. The Hawks had overcome a lackluster start to tie the game earlier in the third when Dave Bolland fed Bickell from behind the net to make it 3-3 just over 2 minutes into the third. But the Blackhawks couldn’t close it out and remained winless on the road since Dec. 14 at Minnesota. The Blackhawks dominated the second period but still trailed after 40 minutes because of an unfortunate bounce. The Sharks were outshot 17-3 in the period but got the go-ahead goal after nearly botching a 2-on-1 chance. Joe Pavelski missed Patrick Marleau on a pass on the odd-man rush but Thornton came up with the puck. His centering pass to Pavelski hit off rookie defenseman Dylan Olsen’s stick and past Crawford to give the Sharks a 3-2 lead with 4:17 left in the second.Kruger had tied the game with two goals off rebounds earlier in the period, ending a 15-game goal-scoring drought with his first career multigoal game. The Sharks got off to a fast start after playing sloppily in losing the previous two games by killing three first-period power plays and converting on two of three chances of their own.

NOTES—The Blackhawks were without two starting defenseman as Steve Montador was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury and Niklas Hjalmarsson sat out with an upper-body injury. Olsen was recalled from the AHL and Sami Lepisto played for the first time since Jan. 2….Two of Braun’s four career goals have come against the Hawks.

Rose sits as Bulls rout Bobcats

Chicago Bulls Logo - Red bull with script above head

CHARLOTTE—No Derrick Rose? No problem.Joakim Noah had 17 points and 14 rebounds, Carlos Boozer scored 16 points and the Bulls throttled the Charlotte Bobcats 95-64 Friday night despite the absence of their leading scorer and reigning league MVP. The Bulls (23-6) won their fifth straight overall and improved to 5-1 this season without Rose, who sat out because of a lower back strain. Derrick Brown scored 10 points to lead the NBA-worst Bobcats, who shot 33 percent and lost their 13th straight game to fall to 3-23. Brown was the only Bobcats player to finish in double figures. Corey Maggette returned to action after missing the last 19 games with a strained hamstring and had four points on 2-of-7 shooting in 14 minutes. The Bulls led by 22 points at halftime before pouring it on in the third quarter, pounding the ball inside to Noah and Boozer, who seemingly scored at will against a Bobcats frontcourt lacking in size and experience. That’s been a persistent problem all season for the Bobcats since they allowed center Kwame Brown to leave via free agency. Noah was dominant inside, hitting 7 of 9 shots as the Bulls’ lead hovered around 30 for most of the second half.Rose injured his back earlier in the week and was limited in a 90-67 win over New Orleans on Wednesday. Coach Tom Thibodeau said Rose would be a game-time decision against the Bobcats and decided to hold him out after watching him in warm-ups. Clearly the Bulls didn’t need him. C.J. Watson started in Rose’s place and had seven points and five assists. All-Star selection Luol Deng scored 10 of his 12 points in the first quarter, including a pair of key 3-pointers, to set the tempo for the Bulls. John Lucas III added 11 points and Omer Asik had 12 rebounds.Prior to the game, Bobcats coach Paul Silas called the Bulls the most talented team in the league and they certainly left no doubt about this one early on. The Bulls held the Bobcats to 31 percent shooting in the first quarter, and Charlotte never mounted a rally after falling behind 30-16. The Bobcats even struggled from the free throw line with both Gana Diop and Bismack Biyombo shooting air balls from the stripe, drawing a mixture of chuckles and head-shaking disgust from the home crowd on NASCAR night.

NOTES—The road only gets tougher for the Bobcats, who’ll face the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers in their next two games at home. … Bobcats owner Michael Jordan was sitting courtside for Friday night’s game but did not return for the second half. … The Bulls scored 27 points off 16 turnovers.

Shurna set the tone in the early going, and the Wildcats shot just over 56 percent overall while hitting 13 of 25 3-pointers.Aaron White led Iowa with 17 points and 12 rebounds, but the Hawkeyes (13-12, 5-7) were simply overmatched.
