MOBILE—Martel Moore caught eight passes for 224 yards and a touchdown, and Northern Illinois rallied for a 38-20 victory over Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Sunday night. The Huskies trailed 13-0 late in the first quarter, but the Mid-American Conference champions scored 31 unanswered points on the way to their ninth straight victory. It was the third time this season Northern Illinois (11-3) rallied from a double-digit deficit to win.Arkansas State (10-3) had its nine-game winning streak snapped. The Sun Belt champions couldn’t overcome five turnovers — including three interceptions thrown by Ryan Aplin.NIU’s Chandler Harnish completed 18 of 36 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns in his final college game. He came into the game as the nation’s top rushing quarterback, averaging 106.3 yards per game, but was limited to minus-3 on the ground after being slowed by an ankle injury in the second quarter. Harnish might not have been able to run, but Moore could. His 224 yards receiving were the third-most in a game in school history.Arkansas State jumped out to an early 13-0 lead, but that was almost disappointing considering the Red Wolves had to settle for two short field goals instead of touchdowns. Brian Davis connected on field goals from 32 and 36 yards before Aplin found the end zone on a 2-yard run.The missed opportunities kept Northern Illinois close, and after some early trouble on offense, the Huskies made their move.Harnish hit Perez Ashford on a 9-yard touchdown pass two plays after a disputed spot on fourth down kept the drive alive, pulling the Huskies to 13-7 just before the end of the first quarter. The Huskies briefly lost Harnish because of his injured left ankle early in the second quarter, but backup Jordan Lynch engineered a 7-play, 78-yard drive that ended on his 3-yard touchdown run to give NIU a 14-13 lead with 4:49 left in the first half. Harnish returned to lead the Huskies on another touchdown drive just before halftime. Coach Dave Doeren gambled on the final play of the drive, going for the touchdown with 2 seconds remaining instead of a point-blank field goal try. It worked, with Jamal Womble plowing forward for a 1-yard touchdown to give Northern Illinois a 21-13 halftime lead. Arkansas State was called for a crucial roughing-the-kicker penalty on a fourth down that extended the drive. Arkansas State was coached by David Gunn, who took over in an interim role after Hugh Freeze left for Mississippi. Both Freeze and the Red Wolves’ new coach — former Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn — watched the game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, but were powerless to help as Northern Illinois rallied for the victory. Arkansas State briefly regained momentum early in the third quarter after Chaz Scales intercepted Harnish’s pass, but Northern Illinois got the ball back three plays later when Jhony Faustin intercepted Aplin. On the next play, Harnish threw a 43-yard touchdown to Moore to extend the lead to 28-13.Arkansas State briefly pulled within 31-20 on Aplin’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Stockemer, but Northern Illinois responded with an interception that Dechante Durante returned for a touchdown to put the game out of reach. Aplin completed 30 of 58 passes for 353 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Northern Illinois’ victory helped the MAC finish with a 4-1 record in bowl games.

The Wildcats had lost their first three conference games – to West Virginia, Marquette and South Florida – for the first time since joining the Big East in 1980-81.Thursday’s 74-57 loss to South Florida was especially unusual, considering that Villanova had won 51 of its last 52 at The Pavilion, its on-campus arena.Today, though, Villanova shot 63 percent in the first half, built a 48-36 lead and cruised to its first league victory despite committing a season-high 28 turnovers.DePaul (10-5, 1-2) entered this game with a rare Big East victory, 84-81 over Pittsburgh Thursday. The Bulls, who dropped to 7-2, had been off to their best start since going 12-0 in 1996-97.Dreeick Rose, last season’s league MVP, had his lowest total since he scored six when the Bulls took a 17-point victory at Toronto on Dec. 15, 2010. He did not return to the game after leaving with 2:29 left in the third quarter. Both teams used mostly reserves in the fourth before Atlanta coach Larry Drew had starters Smith, Johnson and Al Horford enter the game for a few minutes late in the final period.Kyle Korver finished with 13 points for the Bulls, and Carlos Boozer and Jimmy Butler each had 12. Omer Asik pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. The outcome was in stark contrast to last Tuesday at the United Center, where the Hawks blew a 19-point lead in the third quarter and allowed the Bulls to outscore them 34-18 during the final period in a 76-74 loss. This time, there was no such ugly streak for Atlanta.Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was disappointed in the lack of ball movement on offense. The Hawks, who improved to 6-3, have won two straight. They were up 17 late in the first quarter before the Bulls came within two with 4:09 to go in the second on Boozer’s layup. But Atlanta went on an 18-2 run, ending on Johnson’s 12-foot runner in the final seconds of the half, to lead by 18 at intermission.Jeff Teague’s dunk with 5:52 left in the third quarter gave the Hawks their biggest lead at 29. ORLANDO—At times last season the Bulls were guilty of leaning on MVP point guard Derrick Rose too much to help them pull out wins in close games. If the way they closed out Friday night’s 97-83 victory over Orlando is any indication, coach Tom Thibodeau’s team is well on the way to fixing that problem. Rose and Luol Deng each scored 21 points and they held off a fourth-quarter surge by the Magic for their sixth straight victory.Carlos Boozer added 20 points for Chicago, which led by as many as 17 before the lead was trimmed to three. The Bulls closed the game on a 17-6 run and hung on despite getting just four points from Rose in the final 12 minutes.Dwight Howard led the Magic with 28 points and 15 rebounds, and Jason Richardson broke out of scoring slump with 17. But Ryan Anderson, who coach Stan Van Gundy said “just didn’t get in the battle” against the Bulls and had been leading the team in scoring, went cold, along with the Magic’s reserves.Van Gundy said the Magic, who were playing their first playoff opponent from last season since their season-opening loss at Oklahoma City, aren’t ready to compete with that caliber of team right now.The Bulls (7-1) are off to their best start since winning 12 of 13 to open the 1996-97 season. The latest victory began a brutal stretch that includes seven games in nine nights.Orlando (5-3) lost at home for the first time this season.Rose went through some scoring lulls but kept the offense on schedule, handing out 10 assists and coming within two rebounds of a triple-double.The Bulls dominated inside and held a 46-37 rebounding edge. They also had 27 assists. The Magic bench, which had been playing well this season, was 3 for 15 from the field. The game featured several momentum shifts in the first three quarters. The Bulls briefly opened a 17-point lead early in the third before three straight Magic 3-pointers pulled them within 62-54.That came after the Bulls built a 10-point lead at halftime. The Bulls made their early run even though Rose was held scoreless in the second quarter. Kyle Korver picked up the slack with nine points and Boozer added eight, including a jumper at the halftime horn.Rose got off to a strong start with 12 first-quarter points. The Magic jumped out to a 10-2 lead, prompting a quick Bulls timeout. But Chicago responded with a spurt of its own that included six straight points by Rose to tie it at 17.Orlando regained its footing, outscoring the Bulls 10-9 the rest of the quarter thanks to six points by Howard, who was 6 for 8 in the period with 14 points and five rebounds. With such a tough schedule on tap, Thibodeau said the Bulls won’t put too much stock in Friday’s outcome or dwell on what’s ahead.

NOTES—Richard Hamilton suited up but did not play with a sore left groin….Magic swingman Quentin Richardson was inactive, recovering from a chemical burn on his ankle after a self-treatment mishap in which he iced his sore ankle with Icy Hot and then applied ice to it. Rookie G DeAndre Liggins also didn’t dress after having an allergic reaction to shellfish.

Avs turn Hawks into Av-Nots!

Giguere has been in goal most nights during the Avalanche’s run. But Varlamov was solid for a second straight game on Friday. The Blackhawks were flat and sloppy following a 5-4 loss in Philadelphia on Thursday, when they gave up a game-winning power-play goal with 33 seconds left in the game after erasing a two-goal deficit in the third period.Joel Quenneville was even more blunt.Corey Crawford stopped 18 shots.Three recent rookie call-ups — defenseman Dylan Olsen and forwards Jimmy Hayes and Andrew Shaw — were in Hawk’s lineup.Jones deflected in the only goal of the first with 7:03 left in the period.Colorado’s Erik Johnson slid a shot from the right point through traffic and with Jones cutting in front of the net. Stastny sent a pass across the crease to Galiardi, who sent it into a wide-open net.Van Der Gulik extended Colorado’s lead to 3-0 at 8:40, five seconds after the Avalanche had killed a penalty.Leddy’s weak pass along the backboards was picked off by rookie Gabriel Landeskog, who slipped it through traffic to Van Der Gulik in the slot.Viktor Stalberg backhanded a shot off the post 5:47 into the third to cap a breakaway.Varlamov made a point-blank glove save on Sharp about two minutes later.Kobasew completed the scoring on a tip-in with 1:56 left.

Carcillo sustained a knee injury on the play and may miss more time than the suspension…..Markus Kruger (concussion) missed his fifth game and D Steve Montador (upper body) missed his third.
