A’s 4 run ninth,beats Sox

One strike from their 11th consecutive loss, the Oakland Athletics showed interim manager Bob Melvin the desire to win is still there.Scott Sizemore hit a go-ahead three-run double to rally the Oakland Athletics past the White Sox 7-5 Friday night. The A’s won their first game under Melvin. Oakland made the majors’ first managerial change of 2011 by firing Bob Geren after four-plus seasons Thursday and replacing him with Melvin.Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, White Sox closer Sergio Santos (2-3) retired the first two batters and had Josh Willingham in an 0-2 count before walking him. Hideki Matsui followed with an RBI single to cut the White Sox lead to a run. Santos then walked Daric Barton and hit Kurt Suzuki with a breaking ball to load the bases. Sizemore then split the left-center gap to give the Athletics a 7-5 lead.Santos allowed three runs in Wednesday’s loss to the Mariners.Santos has allowed runs in just three of his 25 appearances this year, but has been tagged for three or more runs in all three instances.Grant Balfour (4-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the victory and Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.Paul Konerko hit a two-run homer and A.J. Pierzynski had three hits for the White Sox, who failed to gain ground in the AL Central despite Cleveland and Detroit both losing. The A’s had had 13 hits in avoiding losing 11 straight for the first time since a 12-game slide April 19-30, 1994. Oakland came into the game batting .219 (75 for 343) during the 10-game losing streak.Cliff Pennington and Sizemore led the A’s with three hits.White Sox starter Edwin Jackson pitched six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits.Graham Godfrey made his major league debut with Brett Anderson sidelined by elbow soreness. It was Konerko’s ninth straight game with an extra-base hit, setting a franchise record. The White Sox left the bases loaded after Godfrey struck out Gordon Beckham.Konerko is 20-42 with six doubles, six home runs and 14 RBI during his 11-game hitting streak, raising his average from .287 to .321. He has hit six home runs in his last nine games.Jemile Weeks led off the third with a triple. Center fielder Alex Rios had a bad read on the ball and initially turned in the wrong direction as the ball went over his head. Weeks later scored on Pennington’s infield single to tie the score at two.The White Sox got the lead back for Jackson in the fifth. Alexei Ramirez led off with a double, then Quentin followed a slow bouncer to third baseman Sizemore. Sizemore made an off-balanced throw to first which got away from Barton. Ramirez ended up scoring on the throwing error.Godfrey was chased after giving up a single to Pierzynski. Quentin hustled into third on the hit to right and Pierzynski took second on the throw. Quentin ended up scoring on Rios’ groundout and Adam Dunn drove in Pierzynski on a single to give the White Sox a 5-2 lead. With one out in the first, Pennington doubled down the left-field line. One out later, Pennington scored on Willingham’s single.Coco Crisp scored on pinch-hitter Conor Jackson’s groundout in the seventh.

Cubs rally comes up short as Halladay beats Zambrano, Cubs 7-5

PHILADELPHIA—With a seven-run lead, Roy Halladay didn’t lobby to stay in the game.He might push harder next time.Halladay tossed seven masterful innings to become the first nine-game winner in the majors, Placido Polanco hit a grand slam and the Philadelphia Phillies held on to beat the Cubs 7-5 Friday night.Halladay (9-3) gave up six hits and struck out nine to earn his first win against the Cubs. The Phillies and San Francisco are the only teams he hasn’t beaten.Halladay, who leads the league with four complete games, threw 106 pitches and was ready to go back out in the eighth until Polanco connected to make it 7-0.In his first start since criticizing his team and second-guessing closer Carlos Marmol, Carlos Zambrano got rocked.Zambrano (5-3) allowed seven runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He had a season-high seven walks.Trailing 7-0 in the eighth, the Cubs rallied with five runs off relievers Jose Contreras and J.C. Romero. But Michael Stutes came in and shut them down, and Antonio Bastardo got the final out for his second save. Ryan Madson was unavailable a night after blowing his first save.Domonic Brown also hit a homer for the NL East-leading Phillies. His two-run shot gave Philadelphia a 3-0 lead in the second. Polanco, batting fifth for the first this season, increased the lead in the seventh.Halladay didn’t need much, but the bullpen almost blew it. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner improved to 29-3 when the Phillies give him a lead. He didn’t allow a walk for the fourth time in 14 starts.Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run single off Contreras. Geovany Soto had an RBI single and pinch-hitter Lou Montanez hit a two-run single off Romero to cut it to 7-5.Stutes entered and struck out pinch-hitter Brad Snyder and retired Kosuke Fukudome on a fly to left to strand two runners.Zambrano started a 3-2, 10-inning loss in St. Louis last Sunday. Marmol gave up a tying RBI double to Ryan Theriot in the ninth, setting up Albert Pujols’ second consecutive game-ending homer.Afterward, Zambrano said: “We’re playing like a Triple-A team. This is embarrassing.” He also questioned Marmol’s pitch selection to Theriot, a former teammate.Zambrano apologized a day later, saying his comments were made out of frustration. The only person he was frustrated with this time out was himself. Zambrano angrily snatched the throw back to the mound with his bare hand, walked several feet behind the mound and stared into space while waiting for Brown to circle the bases in the second. After Polanco went deep with the bases loaded on three walks, including an intentional one to Chase Utley, Zambrano casually caught the new ball with his glove and calmly waited on the mound for manager Mike Quade to come out and pull him.Zambrano had allowed just three earned runs combined in his previous three starts.

NOTES—Second-base umpire Alan Porter drew cheers from the crowd before the sixth inning for dancing with the Phillie Phanatic, the furry-green mascot who was dressed like Lady Gaga complete with a blonde wig. … Phillies manager Charlie Manuel flip-flopped Shane Victorino and Polanco in the Nos. 2 and 5 spots in the lineup. It was just the 11th time Polanco batted fifth in his career. … A crowd of 45,602 was the 170th straight sellout at Citizens Bank Park, including postseason games. … Cubs 2B Darwin Barney was 0 for 4 and is hitless in his last 13 at-bats. … Zambrano’s ERA rose from 3.98 to 4.40. … The Phillies scored more than three runs for only the second time in 10 games.

Sox beat up Oakland despite A’s Manger change

Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko each hit two-run homers and the White Sox spoiled the debut of Oakland interim manager Bob Melvin, beating the Athletics 9-4 on Thursday night.Melvin replaced Bob Geren earlier in the day, but the change couldn’t keep Oakland from its 10th consecutive defeat.Mark Buehrle (6-4) threw seven strong innings and improved to 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA in his past seven starts. He allowed seven hits and three runs for the White Sox, who have won six of their past nine and 20 of 32.Dunn was back in the lineup after sitting out two games because of a miserable start in which he has hit. 176. He was hit by a pitch and scored in a three-run second. He connected for the first time since May 24, a two-run shot in the third.Trevor Cahill (6-4) lasted only 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He was unlucky to an extent, allowing four infield hits on dribblers in front of the plate. But he also walked three, hit a batter and allowed Dunn’s two-run blast. It was a rocky introduction for Melvin, who went 493-508 in previous managerial stops in Seattle and Arizona. The Athletics, who entered last in the AL with 223 runs scored, scored three runs or fewer for the fifth consecutive game, and eighth time during their skid. Oakland last lost 10 straight from July 28-Aug. 7, 2008.In the second, the White Sox loaded the bases on A.J. Pierzynski’s walk, Alex Rios’ single and Dunn’s hit by pitch. After Oakland third baseman Adam Rosales dropped a foul pop, Omar Vizquel hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate the Sox first run.Gordon Beckham reached on a tapper in front of the plate, reloading the bases. Juan Pierre walked in a run, and then Alexei Ramirez hit a dribbler up the third-base line that Cahill was unable to handle, scoring the inning’s third run.As maddening as that inning was for Cahill, the third was more of the same — at least after Dunn’s two-run shot to barely cleared the left-field fence for his sixth homer of the year.Vizquel followed that with another short dribbler to reach first. Beckham singled and Pierre reached on yet another infield hit to load the bases. Ramirez drew a walk to score Vizquel, a fitting end to a frustrating night for Cahill, who gave way to reliever Bobby Cramer.Cahill is now 0-4 in his past six starts.Meanwhile, Buehrle allowed Rosales’ run-scoring single in the second, the last of three straight singles for Oakland. He then settled down to throw 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only a walk and an infield single in the third.Buehrle ran into trouble in the seventh when Kurt Suzuki hit a leadoff single and Hideki Matsui hit his fourth home run of the season, cutting the lead to 6-3.The White Sox tacked on three runs in the eighth on Carlos Quentin’s sacrifice fly and Konerko’s two-run blast, all off Oakland reliever Brian Fuentes.Oakland rookie Jemile Weeks drove in his first career run on a bloop single in the ninth.

NOTES—Quentin extended his hitting streak to 11 games, while Konerko extended his to 10…..Dunn’s home run was the 360th of his career, breaking a tie with Johnny Mize for 74th on the career list….Saying he was glad to be back in the lineup, Dunn said that during his rest he learned “[I] don’t like sitting out.” Manager Ozzie Guillen had a request for Dunn: “I asked, ‘Could you please have a good day so then they don’t have to ask me anymore questions about you? Please have a good day so [hitting coach] Greg Walker doesn’t have to drink a bottle of wine to forget about your bad night?’ ” …..The game was the 1,200th for Guillen, who began the night with a 630-569 record. He is tied with Boston’s Terry Francona for the fourth-longest current tenure as manager with one club, behind St. Louis’ Tony La Russa (1996), the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Scioscia (2000) and Minnesota’s Ron Gardenhire (2002).The Sox Chicago improved to 136-135 at home against Oakland…..Graham Godfrey will start for Oakland on Friday in his big-league debut.

Cubs overcome replay call in 9th to beat Phils in 11

PHILADELPHIA—A replay cost Tyler Colvin a go-ahead homer. An error allowed him to score the winning run.Geovany Soto hit a tying homer off Ryan Madson with one out in the ninth and Colvin scored from second on third baseman Placido Polanco’s throwing error in the 11th inning to lift the Cubs over the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 in a game which had the start delayed over an hour by rain and ended early Friday morning.Colvin’s tiebreaking homer in the ninth was overturned by umpires after replays showed a fan wearing a Phillies T-shirt reached over the fence and interfered with the ball. But the Cubs still won their second straight after losing eight in a row.Sean Marshall (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings. Carlos Marmol worked the 11th for his 12th save in 16 chances.Colvin snapped an 0 for 34 slump with his hit off Madson, who had been 14 for 14 in save chances before allowing Soto’s tying solo homer. After Soto connected, Colvin hit a drive to right-center. The ball hit off a male fan’s hands and bounced into the crowd. Colvin circled the bases, but Phillies manager Charlie Manuel quickly came out to challenge the play. Umpires took several minutes to review it before ruling it a ground-rule double.Strong winds and heavy rain stopped the game for 1 hour, 17 minutes in the bottom of the third. Neither starter returned when play resumed, and the teams used 12 relievers. The Cub bullpen tossed 8 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits.Colvin led off the 11th with a single off David Herndon (0-1). He advanced to second on a passed ball and stayed there until Darwin Barney hit a grounder to third with two outs. Polanco’s throw bounced and first baseman Ryan Howard couldn’t catch it cleanly. Colvin never stopped running and scored without a throw home. The NL East-leading Phillies took a 3-0 lead when Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run homer off Randy Wells in the second. Wells gave up three runs and three hits in 2 1/3 innings.Philadelphia’s Kyle Kendrick allowed two hits in three scoreless innings in his fourth start of the season. He’s filling in for injured right-hander Joe Blanton. Starting his first game since fouling a ball off his right knee last Saturday, Rollins put the Phillies ahead with his fourth homer. Raul Ibanez started the inning with a single. Dane Sardinha walked with one out. After Kendrick struck out trying to bunt, Rollins drove a 3-2 pitch into the right-field seats.Aramis Ramirez saved at least one run with a diving grab on a grounder by Sardinha with the bases loaded to end the third.Starlin Castro’s RBI single in the sixth got the Cubs within two. Barney walked with two outs and stole second base. Castro followed with a single to right off Danys Baez. Domonic Brown made a strong throw to the plate. But the ball took a tough hop and Sardinha dropped it or Castro likely would’ve been out by a few steps. The Cubs cut it to 3-2 in the eighth on consecutive two-out doubles by Castro and Carlos Pena off Jose Contreras. NOTES—Ryan Dempster had no problems with his right hip that nearly forced him to miss Wednesday’s start and he’s on track to make his next start…..A crowd of 44,906 was the 169th straight sellout at Citizens Bank Park, including postseason games…..The Phillies failed to score more than three runs for the eighth time in nine games…..Philadelphia is 32-1 when leading after eight innings.

Justin Smoak started the winning rally with a leadoff bloop double off White Sox closer Sergio Santos (2-2). The Mariners have played 32 games decided by two runs or fewer this season, going 16-16 in those contests.White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin homered twice, hitting a solo shot in the first off Jason Vargas and a tying two-run shot in the eighth off reliever Jamey Wright. Vargas said the home run pitch he threw to Quentin was well-placed.Aaron Laffey (1-1) threw a scoreless inning to earn the win and Brandon League pitched a perfect 10th for his AL-leading 17th save of the season. argas pitched 7 1/3 strong innings, but gave way to reliever Wright after allowing a single to Alexei Ramirez with one out in the eighth. Wright fell behind Quentin, who hit a 3-1 pitch into the left-field bleachers, tying the score at 4-all. Vargas, who three a shutout against Toronto in his last start, allowed three runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out four. The Mariners scored just one run in each of the first two games of the series, and White Sox starter Gavin Floyd cruised through the first five innings on Wednesday and extended his scoreless streak against the Mariners to 27 innings.Seattle finally broke through in the sixth, scoring three runs to snap Floyd’s streak and take a 3-1 lead. Dempster sharp as Cubs halt eight game skid against Reds

CINCINNATI—A tight hip nearly kept Ryan Dempster from taking the mound. Instead, he held a tight grip on the Cincinnati Reds offense to end the Cubs’ eight-game losing streak.Carlos Pena and Aramis Ramirez hit homers on consecutive pitches in the fourth inning to back Dempster’s pitching, and the Cubs beat the Reds 4-1 on Wednesday.Dempster (5-5) went six innings for his fourth win in his last five decisions — and first win in five decisions as a visitor at the ballpark he used to call home. The right-hander, who pitched for the Reds in 2002 and ’03, allowed three hits and one run with one walk and eight strikeouts to break a tie with Kirk McCaskill for the second-most major league wins by a Canadian-born pitcher. Dempster has 107, behind only Hall of Famer and former Cubs ace Ferguson Jenkins (284). Rodrigo Lopez nearly got the call to start instead.Kerry Wood and Sean Marshall each pitched a scoreless inning before Carlos Marmol pitched the ninth for his 11th save. Marmol blew his last save opportunity, prompting angry comments from teammate Carlos Zambrano. Quade wanted to get him back on the mound as soon as possible but the Reds won the previous two games handily. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (4-6) lasted 6 1/3 innings on the sunny, steamy afternoon, giving up eight hits and four runs — three earned — with one walk and three strikeouts as the Reds finished a nine-game homestand with five wins. The game-time temperature was 90 degrees. The Reds led 1-0 when Blake DeWitt, bumped up to the third in the batting order for the first time this season, reached on shortstop Paul Janish’s error with one out in the fourth. Pena followed with a 443-foot home run, his ninth of the season. Ramirez hit the next pitch 342 feet into the left field seats for his third homer of the season and 27th of his career against Cincinnati. The Cubs have been plagued by missed scoring opportunities during the losing streak and stranded 10 more runners today. The home runs were more than welcome. The Cubs added a run in the seventh when, with Kosuke Fukudome on third and Pena on first with two outs, reliever Jose Arredondo whirled and faked a throw toward an uncovered first base. He was called for a balk, allowing Fukudome to score and Pena to go to second. The Reds loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, but Dempster coaxed Miguel Cairo — who hit a grand-slam Tuesday night — into a popup before Fred Lewis grounded out to the end the threat. They took a 1-0 lead in the third. Drew Stubbs led off with a soft liner to center for a single, stole second and moved to third on Brandon Phillips’ groundout to second. Joey Votto struck out, but Jay Bruce lined a 3-2 pitch to right field for an RBI single. The Cubs head home in a better mood with the win. The internal strife of the weekend is healing.

NOTES—Two Cubs on the disabled list, OF Reed Johnson and IF Jeff Baker, are scheduled to start rehab assignments Friday with Triple-A Iowa, and OF Alfonso Soriano is due to join them Sunday, manager Mike Quade said….Reds RHP Jared Burton, who hasn’t pitched this season while dealing with shoulder inflammation that required surgery, will report to Cincinnati’s Goodyear, Ariz., complex on June 12, manager Dusty Baker said. “It’s like spring training all over again for him,” Baker said….Reds 3B Scott Rolen missed his fourth consecutive start with a viral infection in his throat and not strep throat, Baker said, quoting a team doctor.

Danks gets first win as Sox beat M’s 3-1

Paul Konerko homered and John Danks pitched into the eighth inning for his first victory of the season, leading the White Sox to a 3-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night. The White Sox beat the Mariners for the ninth straight time at U.S. Cellular Field and are 13-1 at home against Seattle dating to August 18, 2008. The White Sox also matched a club record for the most consecutive home wins against the Mariners. In his 12th start of the season, Danks (1-8) did not resemble the pitcher that lost his first eight decisions. The left-hander pitched 7 1-3 innings and only allowed one unearned run on seven hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Cubs tail spin continues with 8-2 loss to Reds

CINCINNATI—Jonny Gomes hit a three-run homer and drove in four overall, and the Cincinnati Reds sent the frustrated Cubs to their seventh straight loss, 8-2 on Monday night.Gomes has only two homers since April 17, both of them setting up wins over the Cubs at Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati is 5-1 against Chicago and 17-5 over the last two seasons. The Cub slump is their longest since they also dropped seven in a row last July 27-Aug. 3. Matt Garza (2-5) came off the disabled list and lasted four innings, giving up four runs. Mike Leake (5-2) had an RBI single off the right-hander, who hadn’t pitched since May 17 because of a sore elbow. Gomes singled home a run off Garza in the second inning. He connected for his eighth homer off Jeff Samardzija, making it 7-2 in the fifth inning and giving the Cubs another bad memory. Gomes ended a monthlong homer drought with a two-run shot that set up a 7-4 win over the Cubs on May 16 and prompted Mike Quade to call a closed-door meeting with his players. It didn’t get any better in the Cubs’ return. Drew Stubbs hit a solo homer, and Jay Bruce had three hits and scored three times, helping the Reds win for only the sixth time in 19 games. Leake gave up 10 hits and two runs in eight innings, improving to 3-0 in four career starts against the Cubs. He also ended a streak of 19 consecutive innings with at least one baserunner against Reds pitching. The Cubs have repeatedly wasted scoring chances during their stretch of 10 losses in 12 games. They did it again on Monday, adding to their growing frustration. Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano made amends before the game, apologizing to Carlos Marmol. Zambrano second-guessed the closer’s pitch choices after a 3-2, 10-inning loss to St. Louis on Sunday. Zambrano also said after Sunday’s loss that the Cubs were embarrassing and playing like a Triple-A team.A moment out of Rookie League helped sink them on Monday.Kosuke Fukudome and Darwin Barney reached in the third inning. With two outs, Carlos Pena singled sharply to right field, where Bruce came up with the ball quickly. Fukudome was held at third base. Pena rounded first base too far and was tagged out. Fukudome, Barney and third base coach Ivan De Jesus stood motionless for a few seconds, stunned by the rally-killing lapse.

NOTES—The Cubs sent LH reliever Scott Maine back to Triple-A Iowa to open a roster spot for Garza. … CF Tyler Colvin extended his slump to 0 for 32. … The Reds freshened their bullpen by calling up and optioning RH Chad Reineke to Triple-A Louisville. Cincinnati’s bullpen leads the league in innings. … 3B Scott Rolen was out of the lineup for the second consecutive day with an illness. He’s in a 3-for-18 slump. … Bruce extended his hitting streak to eight games. He was the NL’s player of the month for May.

Pujols beats Cubs again in 10th, Zambrano says “We Stink!”

ST. LOUIS—Albert Pujols held the followthrough on his swing for a couple extra seconds, the bat extended like a lightning rod, then high-stepped it to home plate. The St. Louis Cardinals may be accustomed to his winning hits, but the All-Star slugger still gets pretty excited. Pujols hit a game-ending homer in extra innings for the second straight day, beating the Cubs with a leadoff shot in the 10th inning of a 3-2 victory Sunday. “It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you don’t embarrass yourself out there.”

Pujols hammered a 2-1 belt-high fastball from Rodrigo Lopez (0-1) an estimated 446 feet to left for his 10th career game-ending homer. His fifth during a seven-game homestand and No. 13 for the season gave the Cardinals a three-game sweep over the scuffling Cubs, who have lost nine of 11. The Cardinals were down to their last strike before Ryan Theriot tied it with an RBI double off Carlos Marmol, driving in pinch-runner Tony Cruz from first. Theriot extended his hitting streak to 19 games, the Cardinals’ longest since Pujols hit in 30 straight in 2009. Marmol has two blown save opportunities in his last three appearances and is 10 for 14 overall. He had worked a franchise-record 26 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings on the road before Theriot doubled down the left-field line on a 2-2 pitch.

“Awesome, great at-bat,” Pujols said. “He’s been doing that all year.”

Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano ripped his team after pitching seven crisp innings, yielding one run and five hits. The right-hander is 7-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 13 career starts in St. Louis.

“We’re playing like a Triple-A team,” Zambrano said. “This is embarrassing. Embarrassing for the team, for the owners. Embarrassing for the fans.”

Zambrano said Marmol should have blown it past Theriot with a fastball, but instead gave him a slider.

“We should know that Ryan Theriot is not a good fastball hitter, we should know that as a team,” Zambrano said. “We stink. That’s all I have to say.”

Marmol said he hadn’t talked with Zambrano and added, “I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t have anything to say about it.”

Aramis Ramirez returned from a two-game absence with a two-run double in the fourth for the lone damage against Carpenter.Pujols homered twice on Saturday, with his drive off Jeff Samardzija sending the Cardinals to a 5-4 victory in 12 innings. Pujols also had an infield hit in the sixth Sunday and scored on Allen Craig’s base hit.Pujols had been 0 for 12 against Lopez with three strikeouts, a walk, and one RBI on a sacrifice fly.Fernando Salas (3-0) worked a perfect 10th against the top of the Cubs’ order.Carpenter pitched nine innings, surrendering seven hits and two walks. He finished strong, retiring eight of the last nine batters with the lone baserunner coming on a walk. The 36-year-old right-hander has won at least 15 games in all of his healthy seasons since 2004, but remained stuck on his lone win May 10 against the Cubs.Ramirez was back in the fifth slot after recovering from a lacerated lip sustained when he got hit in the face by the ball making a diving attempt on a grounder. Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro singled to begin the fourth and both scored when Ramirez lined a 2-2 pitch into the right-center gap with one out.

The Cubs had only one other runner in scoring position against Carpenter. Zambrano walked with one out in the fifth, ending a string of 21 innings without a walk by St. Louis pitchers, and went to second on Barney’s two-out infield hit before Castro grounded into a force play.

NOTES—The Cubs have scored two or fewer runs in five of the last 11 games, losing five times….Cardinals RF Lance Berkman was out of the lineup after receiving a cortisone shot to his left wrist, injured in a diving catch last month, and Colby Rasmus also did not start in CF due to fatigue, according to manager Tony La Russa…..Craig was 1 for 4 with his ninth RBI in 10 games….Theriot is batting .333 (27 for 81) during his hitting streak and .300 overall.
