Colvin double in 10th beats Padres 1-0

With a first-pitch temperature barely above freezing, Monday was the kind of night catcher Geovany Soto could do without.Good thing for him it ended on a high note – even if it took an extra inning.Pinch-hitter Tyler Colvin doubled home Soto with two outs in the 10th inning to lift the Cubs to a 1-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Monday night.Soto reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs, then scored from first when Colvin lined a shot to right. The Cubs had an abbreviated celebration at home before bolting for the clubhouse for cover.Carlos Marmol (1-1) struck out two in 1 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Cubs.Chad Qualls (0-1) allowed a run while getting two outs for San Diego.Tim Stauffer scattered four hits in seven scoreless innings, striking out four and walking one. He lowered his ERA from 4.80 to 3.27 before being replaced by pinch-hitter Brad Hawpe in the eighth after throwing just 95 pitches.Wearing no sleeves, Carlos Zambrano one-upped Stauffer, allowing three hits in eight scoreless innings for the Cubs. He struck out 10 and walked one.Zambrano struck out the side in the first, then got stronger as the game went on. He retired the last 13 batters he faced, lowering his ERA from 6.11 to 4.21.Zambrano, who hasn’t lost since being put on the suspended list for a dugout tirade during a loss to the White Sox on June 25, faced his only real trouble in the second. He struck out Nick Hundley to lead off the inning before allowing a single to Ryan Ludwick. Cameron Maybin then reached base on a fielder’s choice, and Jason Bartlett’s single advanced Maybin to third. But Zambrano stranded both runners by getting Stauffer to ground out to shortstop.Zambrano allowed just one more hit a fourth-inning single by Hundley.San Diego’s 3-4-5 hitters — Orlando Hudson, Jorge Cantu and Hundley — went a combined 1 for 11 with eight strikeouts. Bartlett, who entered the game batting .167, led the Padres with two hits. The Cubs 3-4-5 hitters — Marlon Byrd, Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Pena — also went a combined 1-for-11. The trio’s only hit was a bunt single by Pena.Pena just missed winning it with a left-field shot in the ninth, but the wind kept him from his first homer in a Cubs uniform. “He crushed that ball,” Cubs manager Mike Quade said. “Well guess what, maybe a bunt single is the way to go sometimes. On nights like this when we’re scrapping for a run, why not?

NOTES—It was the first night game at Wrigley Field in 2011….Pitchers Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner were scheduled to be evaluated by the team orthopedic specialist Monday night. Both have been on the DL since April 8 — Wells with a strained forearm and Cashner with a rotator cuff strain…..Padres OF Chris Denorfia pinch-hit a day after exiting San Diego’s 8-6 win over Houston in the fourth inning with a bruised left forearm suffered during a collision with the right-field wall…..LHP Joe Thatcher, who’s spent the early season on the DL with a shoulder injury, played catch Monday. San Diego manager Bud Black said Thatcher felt fine but isn’t ready to throw off a mound yet.

Price is wrong! Sox blanked 4-0 by Rays for 5th straight loss

ST. PETERSBURG—The White Sox were silenced by an ace, and also got some bad news about one of their top pitchers.David Price allowed four hits in eight dominant innings and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the slumping White Sox 5-0 on Monday night. The White Sox also got bad news about Jake Peavy, who is coming back from a right shoulder injury. The right-hander lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs and four hits, in a rehab start with Double-A Birmingham. The team said Peavy left with discomfort – where the discomfort is was not disclosed — and that he will evaluated on Tuesday.”It’s something I worry [about], he’s my player,” Ozzie Guillen said. “That’s a setback for him. Hopefully, tomorrow we have better news. I think he’s going to see the doctor. Of course we want him here, but we’ve got wait and be patient with him.” The White Sox had been hoping that Peavy might rejoin the team at the end of the month. Now the timetable is in question until after Peavy is examined by team medical staff.Price (2-2) struck out nine and walked two. The left-hander entered 0-4 with a 4.88 ERA in four starts against the White Sox.Felipe Lopez homered and drove in three runs, helping Tampa Bay win for sixth time in seven games. Ben Zobrist had a two-run homer.Edwin Jackson (2-1) gave up four runs and 11 hits in seven innings for the White Sox, who have lost five in a row. Jackson, while with Arizona, walked eight during a 149-pitch no-hitter against Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field last June 25.Joel Peralta pitched the ninth to complete the four-hitter.Any chance of a repeat performance by Jackson ended when leadoff hitter Sam Fuld singled to start the Rays’ three-run first. After Lopez drove in Fuld with a single, Zobrist made it 3-0 on his two-run shot. Zobrist had just one hit in 13 at-bats over his previous five games.Fuld had four hits and made a diving catch in center during the third to take away a hit from Brent Morel.Jackson worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the second by striking out Elliot Johnson. The right-hander, who pitched for the Rays from 2006-08, had won all three previous starts against his former team, including a 5-1 victory over Price on April 7 on the South Side.Tampa Bay went up 4-0 on Lopez’s fifth-inning double. Lopez also had a solo homer off Matt Thornton in the eighth.

Rockies score 4 in eighth inning to take rubber match from Cubs

DENVER—Dexter Fowler hit a two-out, two-run double to ignite a four-run eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies went on to beat the Cubs 9-5 Sunday for their eighth victory in nine games. With the score tied at 5, the Rockies sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth to break the game open. Ryan Spilborghs began the inning with an infield single off reliever Marcos Mateo (0-1) and Jose Lopez doubled, breaking out of an 0-for-18 skid. After Jose Morales and pinch-hitter Ty Wiggington each fanned, Fowler lashed a double to right center to give the Rockies the lead. Jonathan Herrera and Carlos Gonzalez, who had four hits on the day, followed with RBI singles.Neither starter figured in the decision and both Ryan Dempster and Colorado’s Alan Johnson, who was making his major league debut, did not fare well in the cool, blustery conditions at Coors Field.Dempster gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings while Johnson was touched for five runs on six hits in four innings.Rafael Betancourt (1-0), the fourth of five Rockies pitchers, entered in the eighth and picked up the win with two-thirds innings of hitless relief. The Rockies overcame the loss of a key part of their offense when Seth Smith was lifted in the top of the fifth inning because of tightness in his left groin. He hit a two-run homer and doubled and scored before being replaced by Spilborghs. The Cubs evened the score 4-all when Aramis Ramirez delivered a run-scoring single and Darwin Barney came home on second baseman Herrera’s errant throw to first while trying to complete a double play.Gonzalez, whose four hits in a game matched a career high, started the Rockies’ first-inng rally with a run-scoring double and Smith followed an RBI single by Todd Helton with a home run that sailed into the bleachers behind the center field fence.Castro, who singled to start the game and finished with three hits, scored on a double play grounder in the first.

NOTES—Dempster fanned Johnson in the fourth for his fourth strikeout of the game, pushing his career total to 1,600. … A year ago to the day, Ubaldo Jimenez threw the first no-hitter in Rockies’ history against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. Jimenez (right thumb) is set to make his second start this season when he returns from the disabled list on Tuesday against San Francisco. … In going 4 for 5 on Saturday, Starlin Castro at 21 years, 24 days old is the youngest player in the majors. Haren, Izturis help Halos sweep Sox

Dan Haren has’t had a problem following every Jered Weaver masterpiece.Haren pitched into the seventh inning for his fourth win of the season, Maicer Izturis had three hits and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beat the White Sox 4-2 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.Haren (4-0) joined Weaver as the major leagues’ first four-game winners. The right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and not allowing a walk. After initially struggling in the ninth, rookie closer Jordan Walden got Juan Pierre to pop out to left with the bases loaded for his third save in as many opportunities.Mark Trumbo added a solo shot in the fourth inning off White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (1-1), as the Sox lost their fourth straight game. They opened their 10-game homestand winning four of the first six, and three of their losses were blown saves by the bullpen.Haren retired nine straight White Sox batters until allowing a double to Carlos Quentin in the seventh inning. After an infield hit by Alex Rios, Haren gave up back-to-back run-scoring singles to A.J. Pierzynskiand Alexei Ramirez. Haren had pitched 19 scoreless innings until giving up the two RBI singles.Haren, who has 1.16 ERA, is even surprising himself with his dominance.Hisanori Takahashi and Francisco Rodriguez each got one out in the seventh inning and Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless eighth before turning the game over to Walden. He gave up a leadoff double to Quentin and walked Rios in the ninth. Pierzynksi moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt, but Walden rebounded by striking out Ramirez. After issuing a walk to Omar Vizquel, Walden got Juan Pierre to pop out to end the game. The Angels struck first when Izturis lined Buehrle’s fourth pitch of the game down the line in left for a double. Howard Kendrick followed with a hard grounder back at Buehrle, who kicked the ball and misdirected it from Ramirez at shortstop into the outfield for a single. Bobby Abreu struck out before Torri Hunter drove in Izturis on a sacrifice fly.Izturis doubled again in the third and scored on Abreu’s double to make it 2-0.Trumbo’s homer in the fourth made it 3-0, and Vernon Wells hit a liner off the outfield wall in the sixth. He went to third on the triple and eventually scored on Alberto Callaspo’s single.Scioscia questioned whether Wells’ drive was a home run. The umpires reviewed the video and determined the original call was correct.Buehrle allowed four runs on 10 hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked two.

NOTES—The Sox begin an 11-game road trip with Tampa Bay on Monday….The last starting pitcher before Weaver to have four wins in his team’s first 13 games was Roger Clemens in 1991 for the Red Sox….Adam Dunn was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

Iowa capitalized on the fumble when QB Brad Banks connected with WR Jesse Schmidt for a 32 yard touchdown reception on the Barnstormers second play from scrimmage. The Rush managed to score on a 43 yard touchdown reception by Michna to WR Charles Dillon. However, the Rush defense was unable to stop the Barnstormers offense as Banks and Schmidt connected for two additional touchdown receptions before the end of the first quarter. After each of the teams exchanged interceptions to open the second quarter, the Rush defense held strong and limited the Barnstormers to just one touchdown in the quarter. DENVER–Casey Coleman scattered four hits while working into the sixth inning and Starlin Castro went 4 for 5 with a three-run homer in the Cubs 8-3 win over Colorado on Saturday night that snapped the Rockies’ seven-game winning streak.Alfonso Soriano also went deep for the Cubs, whose win ended a six-game skid at Coors Field that dated to Aug. 9, 2009.The Rockies, who were missing Carlos Gonzalez (soreness) and Todd Helton (rest) from their starting lineup, hadn’t been blown out all year, losing just twice in their first 13 games, both in extra innings.Jason Hammel (1-1) became the first Rockies starter to lose a game all season, allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings.Despite walking three and hitting two batters, Coleman (1-0) kept the Rockies off balance while giving up just four hits and one run, which came in the second when Troy Tulowitzki tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 1.So efficient while jumping out to a baseball-best 11-2 start, the Rockies’ watered-down lineup was 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position, including 0 for 9 against Coleman. Colorado left 13 men on base. The Cubs, who had 17 hits, broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth when Coleman slapped a one-out single to center and took third on Castro’s double down the left-field line. Coleman scored on Darwin Barney’s slow roller to first baseman Jason Giambi.Soriano made it 3-1 in the sixth with his fifth homer, which came off Hammel. The Cubs put it away with a five-run seventh inning with all the runs coming off righty Felipe Paulino, who allowed hits to five of the six batters he faced and was charged with five earned runs. He saw his ERA jump from 1.59 to 9.00.Castro’s blow was the big one. He sent an 0-1 offering into the left field stands for his first homer, which made it 6-1.Chris Iannetta homered for Colorado, his two-run shot off John Grabow in the eighth making it 8-3. The Rockies had a chance to make it interesting, putting two men on base for Giambi, who battled Kerry Wood through a 10-pitch at-bat before striking out.Soriano’s RBI double put the Cubs ahead 1-0 in the second, and the Rockies tied it in the bottom half on Seth Smith’s sacrifice fly that scored Tulowitzki, but Colorado wasted leadoff doubles in the fifth and sixth innings while the game was still up for grabs.Smith led off the fourth with a double and Ty Wigginton was hit by a pitch. Ian Stewart, mired in a 2 for 24 slump, popped out to second, Iannetta struck out looking and Hammel grounded out to third. An inning later, Dexter Fowler led off with a double and took third on catcher Koyie Hill’s throwing error. Halos beat Sox again after long rain delay

After a lengthy delay, the White Sox struggled to get anything going offensively against the Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem.Even more disheartening, it was against a pitcher making his second major league start.Rookie Tyler Chatwood pitched seven strong innings to lead the Angels to a 7-2 victory over the White Sox on Saturday. The game was delayed by two hours and 10 minutes due to rain. The White Sox were unable to string together any hits to build momentum in any inning, as they grounded into three double plays.Chatwood (1-1) retired 10 of his first 13. He gave up five hits, struck out three and allowed only a solo home run to Carlos Quentin, his 100th career homer.Gavin Floyd (1-1) gave up six runs and eight hits over six innings. He threw three wild pitches and allowed hits to the leadoff batter in each of the first four innings. After allowing two hits to start the fourth, Floyd appeared to have found his rhythm, retiring eight in a row. But after a pair of two-out walks in the sixth, pitching coach Don Cooper paid Floyd a visit and Conger drove the next offering down the right-field line for his second homer of the season to give the Angels a 6-1 lead.Paul Konerko hit his fourth homer, a solo shot with two outs in the ninth.Juan Pierre had two hits and reached base three times for the White Sox. He was caught stealing in the third, unsuccessful for the fifth straight time. He is 4 for 9 on stolen base attempts this season.Howie Kendrick homered and drove in three runs for the Angels. Leadoff man Maicer Izturis had three hits.Izturis has 14 hits in his last 26 at-bats against the White Sox, getting hits in seven consecutive meetings. He is 6 for 10 in the series. In the third inning, Brandon Wood doubled and advanced to third on Izturis’ second hit of the game, but Izturis was tagged out in a rundown. Kendrick then drove a 3-2 pitch over the left-center wall to put the Angels up 3-0.Floyd was relieved in the seventh by Will Ohman, who gave up a double to Izturis and an RBI single to Kendrick that extended the Angels’ lead to 7-1. Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia was pleased with the performance by Chatwood.

NOTES—The start was delayed for two hours and 10 minutes. … Quentin has five hits in his last 32 at-bats. … White Sox RHP Jake Peavy (right shoulder tendinitis) threw 34 pitches in a side session. He expects to throw 90-95 pitches Monday with Double-A Birmingham and will try to exceed 100 pitches next Saturday with Triple-A Charlotte. He hopes to rejoin the team by the end of April. … The White Sox have committed the second-most errors in the majors this season, but manager Ozzie Guillen has confidence his team will improve. “We have a third baseman [Brent Morel] who will win the Gold Glove before his career is over,” Guillen said. “The shortstop [Alexei Ramirez] should be a Gold Glove [winner].” Angels 1B Kendrys Morales (left ankle) did some running drills at the team’s spring training complex in Arizona on Friday and is “progressing,” according to manager Mike Scioscia. SS Erick Aybar (left oblique) took swings from the right side and will continue to do so while the team evaluates him.

Bulls explode late to escape with game one win over Pacers

Never mind what everyone else was thinking, Derrick Rose insisted he didn’t expect the Bulls to roll over the Indiana Pacers. They certainly didn’t in Game 1.Rose scored 39 points and found Kyle Korver for a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 48 seconds left, helping top-seeded Chicago stage a late rally to beat the Pacers 104-99 in their playoff opener on Saturday.

“We knew it was going to be a hard game,” Rose said. “From the beginning I guess we weren’t prepared for it. Next time I think we’ll be ready.”

For the Pacers, the loss was tough to accept. They controlled most of the game, but couldn’t put it away. They would make little runs, the Bulls would come back, and the Pacers would pull ahead again. With Rose staring at them, Danny Granger never felt safe.

“With Derrick Rose on the other team? No,” Granger said. “With Derrick Rose on the other team, no. It’s like a crazy stalker ex-girlfriend. Everytime you tell her you don’t want to talk to her, she’ll show up at your door again.”

Trailing 98-88 in the final period, the Bulls showed the resolve that carried them to a league-best 62-20 record, closing with a 16-1 run over the final 3:38.Rose scored seven during the impressive finish, including a three-point play and a floater that tied it at 99 with 1:27 left. He then hit Korver with a cross-court pass for a 3 that gave the Bulls their first lead at 102-99.Granger then missed a 3 and Joakim Noah got the rebound. Rose eventually hit two free throws with 14.8 seconds remaining.Game 2 in this best-of-7 series is Monday night at the United Center.Rose again showed why he is an MVP favorite even though he was off target. He missed each of his nine 3-point attempts but made 19 of 21 at the foul line and finished with six rebounds and six assists.Luol Deng added 18 points and Korver finished with 13, no shot bigger than that 3.Rose said an open 3 is “like a layup” for Korver, who credited the dynamic point guard for finding him.Granger led Indiana with 24 points, and Tyler Hansbrough shook off an elbow from Kurt Thomas to finish with 22. Darren Collison scored 17, but had just two in the second half, and the Pacers came up just short in their first playoff game in five years.Even so, they gave the Bulls all they could handle. With the Pacers leading by 10, Deng hit two free throws with 3:28 remaining to start the comeback. Noah followed with a tip-in and dunk to make it a four-point game, and the Bulls were on their way.Exactly how far they’ll go remains to be seen, but they’re certainly aiming high after securing home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. They won nine straight and 21 of 23 down the stretch, and anything less than a big run would be a big disappointment.Meanwhile, the Pacers will try to shake this one off and figure out how a game that looked so promising ended in defeat. The Pacers were concerned late in the third quarter when Hansbrough was elbowed by Thomas as he was trying to rebound a miss by Rose. Hansbrough stayed down for several minutes and, still woozy, had to take a seat in the tunnel. He eventually walked to the locker room under his own power. He returned with 5:33 remaining, and it looked as if he might lead the Pacers to a win.Instead, the Bulls came surging back, erasing that deficit after Hansbrough hit back-to-back jumpers and converted a three-point play to make it 98-88. Now, they can breathe a little easier after a hard, physical game.

NOTES—The Bulls held a 49-34 rebounding advantage…..The Bulls went 53-12 after a 9-8 start….Former Bulls assistant Johnny Bach presented the game ball before the opening tip.

Canucks hold on, lead Hawks 2 games to 0

VANCOUVER—The Vancouver Canucks have spent the entire week telling everyone they aren’t the same team that was knocked out of the playoffs by the Blackhawks the previous two seasons. Not the same team that won Game 1 both times only to blow momentum-killing leads in Game 2 and go on to lose the series. Not the same team that couldn’t beat the Blackhawks on home ice.The Canucks backed up all that talk Friday night, but not before a few flashback moments.Daniel Sedin scored his second goal midway through the third period and the Canucks survived three near comebacks and a frantic final few minutes to beat the Blackhawks 4-3 and take a 2-0 lead in the first-round playoff series.Jannik Hansen opened the scoring, and Alexander Edler made it 3-1 with 13.1 seconds left in the second period. But Roberto Luongo, who made 22 saves, was beaten by a shot off the boards early in the third, and with 7:10 left after putting a rebound into the slot to set up a tense finish. With the victory, the Canucks headed to the United Center for Game 3 on Sunday night with a chance to take a stranglehold on the best-of-7 series.Ben Smith had two goals, Viktor Stalberg also scored and Corey Crawford made 23 saves for the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks.Smith scored the Blackhawks’ first goal of the series with 5:10 left in the second period to make it 2-1, and added his second with 7:10 remaining in the third to make it 4-3. But Smith also accidentally tipped Edler’s point shot past his own goalie as the second period was winding down. The Blackhawks had won five consecutive playoff games in Vancouver while knocking out the Canucks the past two seasons. The Blackhawks also lost the first game both times before bouncing back to win Game 2 and the series. A couple of times it looked as if it might be happening again.Stalberg pulled the Hawks to within a goal 1:56 into the third, and Crawford kept it close with a couple of great saves on Ryan Kesler. But Sedin, the NHL leader with 104 regular-season points, scored on a 3-on-2 rush, cutting into the middle and snapping a low shot past Crawford’s glove.Smith made it close again on a room-service rebound in the slot, but the Canucks survived a frantic last couple minutes with Crawford out for an extra attacker. None of them came from the Blackhawks top players, however. Captain Jonathan Toews, who lost the puck on an early breakaway, and fellow offensive stars Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp don’t have a point yet. And the Hawks fourth-ranked power play was shotless in two chances.

NOTES—After losing RW Tomas Kopecky to a hit in Game 1, ….Bryan Bickell left holding his right wrist after a hit five minutes into the third period. He didn’t return and will be re-evaluated Saturday, Quenneville said…..Vancouver second-line LW Mikael Samuelsson was a late scratch because of illness. D Aaron Rome dressed as the 12th forward….Kopecky was replaced by Fernando Pisani. The Blackhawks also subbed C Marcus Kruger for Jake Dowell….. Vancouver LW Raffi Torres can return from a four-game suspension in Game 3, but wasn’t able to practice Friday because of food poisoning.
