Nick Minnerath scored 20 points and Ray McCallum added 16 as Detroit defeated Loyola 83-71 on Thursday night.Chris Blake had 15 points for the Titans (9-7, 3-1 Horizon League), and Eli Holman had 10 points and 14 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season.Geoff McCammon had 18 points, Terrance Hill 16 and Walt Gibler 15 for the Ramblers (10-6, 1-4), who played their first home game since Dec. 11 after four straight on the road.Holman’s layup with 18:34 remaining gave Detroit the lead for good, 40-38. McCallum and Jason Calliste hit 3-pointers to spark an 8-0 run that resulted in a 51-41 lead, and the Ramblers got no closer than six the rest of the way.

Three power play goals do in Hawks as Stars win 4-2

 

Mike Ribeiro broke a tie midway through the second period with his second power-play goal of the game and the Dallas Stars beat the Blackhawks 4-2 on Wednesday night.Ribeiro scored at 9:14 when his shot from the right circle struck Niklas Hjalmarsson’s right knee and caromed over rookie goalie Corey Crawford’s glove.Dallas’ Brenden Morrow also had a power-play goal as the Stars went 3 for 3 with the man advantage and ran their road winning streak to six. Steve Ott added a short-handed, empty-net goal.Fernando Pisani and Tomas Kopecky scored for the Blackhawks, 1-4-0 in its last five games. The Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks dropped to 12-11-0 at the United Center, where they were 29-8-4 last season, and are 3-8-1 when tied after two periods.Dallas’ Kari Lehtonen made 35 saves, and Crawford stopped 18 shots.Viktor Stalberg narrowly missed on a penalty shot with 7:07 left in the second period and the game tied at two. He beat Lehtonen with a backhand attempt, but the puck clanked of the right post, the crossbar and then the left post before bounding away from the net.The Blackhawks came out flat and undisciplined in the first period, and the Stars pounced on shaky Hawks play and 25th-ranked penalty killing to take a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.Morrow tucked in a power-play goal just 2:46 into the first, and 46 seconds after Kopecky was sent off for hooking during a sloppy shift. Crawford stopped Matt Niskanen’s shot from the top of the slot, but Morrow converted the rebound from the right side of the crease.Ribeiro’s screened tip-in just under five minutes later — with Brian Campbell off for slashing — made it 2-0. Ribeiro redirected Brad Richard’s drive from the left circle over Crawford.Blackhawks coach Joel Quennevile called a timeout immediately after the goal.The Blackhawks bounced back in the second to tie it.Pisani cut it to 2-1 at 9:35 when his shot from the slot struck the tip of Lehtonen’s glove and fluttered into the net.Kopecky tied it just over two minutes later, using a strong second effort to convert his own rebound.Lehtonen made a pad save on Kopecky’s first shot, fired off Patrick Kane’s centering pass. Kopecky, however, fought through two Dallas defenders and slid in the loose puck.Stalberg was awarded his penalty shot after being pulled down from behind by Nicklas Grossman.With Dallas ahead 3-2, Lehtonen made a desperate stick save on Brent Seabrook with just over two minutes left.

Bulls fall to Nets on late basket by Vujacic

 

NEWARK—Sasha Vujacic made the tiebreaking basket with 5.3 seconds left, and the New Jersey Nets snapped their five-game losing streak with a 96-94 victory over the Bulls on Wednesday night.With the game tied at 94, Nets guard Devin Harris appeared to be attempting a lob pass to center Brook Lopez, but the ball was knocked to Vujacic, who put it in for his 13th point. Derrick Rose then missed a long jumper and the Bulls five-game winning streak was over.Kris Humphries responded to a demotion with a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Harris finished with 18 points and 11 assists for the Nets.Rose had 21 points but just one assist for the Bulls, who lost for only the third time in 17 games.

Bulls keep rolling against Raptors

 

The Bulls clobbered another struggling team and got some rest for a couple of their key players.It was perfect timing, too.Luol Deng scored 24 points and the surging Bulls beat the Toronto Raptors 111-91 on Tuesday night.Derrick Rose added 19 points and six assists for the Bulls, who have won 14 of 16. Reserve Taj Gibson had 16 points and 14 rebounds, helping the Bulls to a 44-33 edge on the glass and a 58-38 advantage in points in the paint.Rose and Carlos Boozer, who had 12 points and 13 rebounds, rested during the fourth quarter as the Bulls began a stretch of four games in five nights with their fifth consecutive victory.The Bulls have taken advantage of a soft schedule that’s consisted of only three teams above .500 in their last 16 games. They play two more, Wednesday at New Jersey and Friday at Philadelphia, before hosting the Celtics on Saturday.The Bulls pulled away in the second quarter. Leading 35-31 with 9:14 left, the Bulls closed the half with a 24-10 surge. Rose had a key three-point play, Gibson had a tip-in and Deng scored with 6.2 seconds left to give the Bulls a 59-41 lead at the break.Omer Asik had a career-high 13 points as reserves finished with 52 points overall.Andrea Bargnani, returning after missing four games with sore left calf, scored 23 for Toronto. DeMar DeRozan had 18 points.The slumping Raptors got Bargnani and Jerryd Bayless back, but point guard Jose Calderon missed the game with a sprained right ankle. Bayless, who missed a game with a sprained left ankle, had 11 points and eight assists.Toronto has lost 12 of its last 15 games.Gibson had a breakout game after struggling since he suffered a concussion Dec. 18 in a loss to the Clippers.

NOTES—Raptors F Sonny Weems missed his eighth straight game with back spasms….With a 22-point lead with 6:01 left, the crowd starting chanting, “Scalabrine, Scalabrine.” Boozer and Joakim Noah also got involved on the bench. The fans finally got their wish when Brian Scalabrine came in with 2:34 left to a loud ovation and hit a jumper with 16 seconds left.

Demons just come up short against Mountaineers

ROSEMONT—Casey Mitchell scored 18 points, and West Virginia beat DePaul 67-65 after blowing a 14-point lead in the second half on Tuesday night.With a 58-44 lead with about 10 minutes remaining, the Mountaineers (9-4, 1-2) appeared to be in good shape after opening Big East play with losses to St. John’s and Marquette. Instead, they couldn’t hang on against the conference’s worst team.Things got real interesting in the closing minutes when the Blue Demon’s Jeremiah Kelly buried a 3-pointer after a turnover to make it a two-point game and then hit another with 1:30 left to tie it at 63 with about 1:30 left after a free throw by Cam Thoroughman.Darryl Bryant answered with a three-point play to give West Virginia a three-point lead. DePaul’s Brandon Young hit two free throws with 49.9 seconds left to make it 66-65, but the Mountaineers hung on.John Flowers hit the second of two free throws with 0.9 seconds left after Young missed a jumper from the wing, sending DePaul (6-9, 0-3) to its 16th straight loss against conference opponents.

TERRE HAUTE—Jake Odum had 13 points and six assists Tuesday night and Indiana State defeated Illinois State 72-57.Aaron Carter was the high scorer for the Sycamores (7-7, 2-1 Missouri Valley) with 14 points. Jordan Printy connected on all three of his 3-point tries and finished with 11 points, and R.J. Mahurin had 10 points.Indiana State opened a double-digit lead late in the first half and was ahead 43-31 at the break. It was the Sycamores’ 10th straight home win, their longest streak at the Hulman Center in 10 years.Jackie Carmichael led Illinois State (8-6, 0-3) with 16 points. Cousin 12, Wilkins 11 for the Redbirds.

SIU beats Bradley behind Fay


PEORIA—Carlton Fay scored 18 points Tuesday night to lead Southern Illinois to a 72-64 victory over Bradley.Justin Bocot scored 14 points and Mamadou Seck had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Salukis (8-6, 2-1). SIU shot 62.5 percent from the field (15 of 24) in the first half in building a 35-27 lead.The Salukis finished at 51 percent from outside, and preserved the victory by making all 10 of their free-throw attempts in the final minute.Dyricus Simms-Edwards led Bradley (6-8, 0-3) with 18 points. Andrew Warren added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Braves, but made just 3 of 14 shots from the field, and missed a free throw to end his consecutive streak from the foul line at 40 – four short of tying James Gillingham’s Bradley record.

Irish still perfect at home after win over UCONN

SOUTH BEND—Ben Hansbrough’s assignment was to slow down the NCAA’s leading scorer and make sure UConn’s Kemba Walker didn’t take over the game.Mission accomplished.Hansbrough led Notre Dame with 21 points Tuesday night and helped hold Walker to 19 — shy of his head-turning 26.7 average — as the 14th-ranked Irish stayed unbeaten at home by holding off the eighth-ranked Huskies 73-70.Walker had his streak of 11 straight games with at least 20 points stopped.He was 8-for-23 shooting, including 0 for 5 on 3-pointers.It wasn’t as much Hansbrough as it was his shot just not falling.Tim Abromaitis, who missed three free throws in the final 19 seconds, added 19 points for the Irish (13-2, 2-1), who were without starting forward Carleton Scott because of a hamstring injury. Notre Dame is 10-0 at home this season.

EVANSTON—Draymond Green scored 15 points, including an offensive rebound basket after a missed free throw with 12 seconds to go Monday night, and No. 18 Michigan State held off a furious finish from Northwestern to beat the Wildcats 65-62.Durrell Summers and Kalin Lucas had 12 points apiece for the Spartans (10-4, 2-0 Big Ten), who beat Northwestern for the 15th time in the last 16 meetings.NU’s John Shurna, the Big Ten’s leading scorer at 22.2 points who has been bothered by a sore ankle, shot just 1-for-11 and missed four of his five 3-point attempts while scoring 11 points. LOS ANGELES—Jonathan Toews scored the winning goal off his own skate at 14:33 of the third period, giving the Blackhawks a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night to end a three-game skid.The defending Stanley Cup champions swept the Kings in four games for the first time since 1981-82, when they went 3-0-0 against them. Patrick Sharp continued his success against Los Angeles, scoring two goals and assisting on another. His three points gave him eight this season against the Kings.Sharp’s two goals gave the Hawks the lead both times until Ryan Smyth tied it 3-3 for the Kings on a drive that broke his stick at 12:42 of the third.Toews answered 1:51 later, when he scored in traffic after Jonathan Quick had already made one save, drawing cheers from a contingent of red-clad Hawks fans sitting behind their bench.Corey Crawford made 26 saves as the Blackhawks avoided a four-game skid for the first time this season.The Kings dropped their fourth in a row, giving them their second such losing streak this season.Sharp’s second goal made it 3-2 early in the third off Alex Martinez’s turnover.
