Flyers score early, then hold off Hawks 5-3 to even up series.

PHILADELPHIA—In a series that has felt like a swap meet with the way the Flyers and Blackhawks have traded goals, Philadelphia found itself with some extra room to work with in the third period of Game 4.Then the Hawks roared back, reminding the Flyers and their nervous fans how tight and fast-paced these Stanley Cup Finals have been.Mike Richards, Matt Carle and Claude Giroux all scored first-period goals and Philadelphia withstood a late surge by the Blackhawks to win 5-3 on Friday. With two straight home victories by a total of three goals, goalie Michael Leighton and the Flyers have bounced back to tie the series at 2.Game 5 is Sunday night at the United Center and there’s no reason to think it won’t be just as intense as the first four.Jeff Carter scored an empty-netter in the final seconds to help the Flyers become the first team this series to win a game by more than one goal. The Flyers, trying to win their first title since 1975, blew the lead late in the third.Leading 4-1 early in the period, Dave Bolland and Brian Campbell scored late goals to slice the deficit to one.The home team has won all four games this series. Game 6 will be back in Philadelphia.Home ice might not matter much if Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane can’t get untracked and return to form. Kane had one assist as the top line continued to flounder.Ville Leino also scored for the Flyers, who have not lost beyond Game 3 in any round this postseason. The Hawks nearly snapped that skid — they just ran out of time. After the Blackhawks won a key faceoff, Bolland sent one past Leighton for the Hawks first power-play goal of the game. They entered 0 for 6 and went 1 for 3 in Game 4.The goal energized the Blackhawks. They didn’t look beat down from having to rally and fight the Flyers for most of the first 60 minutes.Campbell made it 4-3 when his shot appeared to deflect off Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen’s stick, and silenced the Flyers crowd. His first goal of the series was upheld after a brief review and gave the Blackhawks a glimmer of hope for a monster upset. It was just too late. The Hawks pulled Antti Niemi for the man-advantage but Carter slid in the empty-netter and tense crowd exhaled and celebrated. Now it’s back to the United Center. Philadelphia hadn’t held a two-goal lead in the final all series until the first period. Richards, the Flyers captain, had been as quiet on the ice in the final as he can be with the press. His first goal of the final was a memorable one. Richards chased Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson from behind the net and struck with a quick steal. His backhanded flip toward the net stunned Niemi for his seventh goal of the playoffs and a 1-0 lead only 4:35 into the game. Carle scored his first goal of the postseason, when he buried a rebound from inside the right circle to make it 2-2.Flyers fans started their derisive “An-tti! An-tti!” chants toward the beleaguered goalie.Yes, a pair of big market teams are a huge reason why this series has done record ratings for the NHL. But this series has looked like Olympic speedskating with sticks. The early dynamic pace left fans needing to catch their breath.Sharp had his goal deflected by Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn to make it 2-1.Giroux, who scored the Game 3 overtime winner, swung the momentum back toward Philly when he scored with 36.3 seconds left. He was all alone near the net and punched into a wide open net. He shook his head like he couldn’t believe how easy it was.Leighton knows the feeling. He has been steady for the Flyers since he was yanked in Game 1. He stopped 26 of the first 27 shots he faced and finished with 31 saves.Niemi had 26 saves, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a rugged first period.

NOTES—Vice President Joe Biden was at the game. So was singer Cyndi Lauper…..The Flyers improved to 9-1 at home in the postseason……The first four games of the Stanley Cup Finals have been decided by one goal twice……The Flyers drew a crowd of 20,304 to go over the 1 million mark in attendance (1,000,372).

Sox back to being one trick ponies, but HR’s help Garcia beat Rangers

Carlos Quentin, booed after committing an error that led to a Texas run, atoned with a two-run homer in the seventh inning Thursday night as the White Sox rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Rangers.Freddy Garcia (5-3) pitched seven solid innings and Andruw Jones and Alex Rios also homered for the White Sox, who avoided being swept at home by the Rangers for the first time in 24 years.Colby Lewis (4-4) was in command for six innings but needed only three pitches in the seventh to blow a 3-2 lead. After A.J. Pierzynski doubled on the first pitch, Quentin sent Lewis’ 1-0 delivery just over the right-field fence. Before getting his seventh homer of the season, Quentin had gone hitless in two at-bats as his average fell to .205. The right fielder had incurred the wrath of fans at U.S. Cellular Field with two outs in the fourth, when he dropped David Murphy’s routine fly for a two-base error. Justin Smoak followed with a single to make it 1-1. Garcia, a former World Series hero who was supposed to be the weak link in the rotation, leads the team with five wins and has had only two bad starts. The 33-year-old right-hander allowed three runs (two earned), seven hits and one walk.Matt Thornton pitched a perfect eighth and Bobby Jenks worked a scoreless ninth for his eighth save.Michael Young’s fifth-inning RBI double and Craig Gentry’s sacrifice fly in the sixth gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead. Young went 7 for 13 with five RBIs in the series and is batting .419 over his last 18 games. Gentry was playing in place of injured star Vladimir Guerrero.Rios’ homer in bottom of the sixth, his 12th of the season, narrowed the deficit to 3-2.Jones’ second-inning solo shot opened the scoring and gave him 398 career homers, tied with Dale Murphy for 48th all-time. It was his 10th this year but first in 58 at-bats since May 5.

NOTES—Guerrero, hit by a ball during batting practice Wednesday, didn’t play for a second straight night due to swelling around his left eye. “He could have played, but the way people pitch him tight, I didn’t want to risk him getting hurt because he didn’t see the ball completely,” manager Ron Washington said. “I need Vlad beyond June 3. He’s too big a weapon for us.” Guerrero is batting .335 with 12 HRs and 44 RBIs. …Gordon Beckham, one of baseball’s top rookies last year but a .200 hitter this season, didn’t play. Asked if he simply was giving Beckham a night off, manager Ozzie Guillen said: “So far. I didn’t say I’m going to bench him. I’m just saying if someone performs better than him, I have no choice. I need to win some games.” Beckham’s replacement, Jayson Nix, went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. … The White Sox said Mark Teahen, who had a pin inserted into his broken right middle finger Thursday, will miss at least six weeks. Guillen said 43-year-old Omar Vizquel, an 11-time Gold Glove winner at shortstop, will be the main 3B for now.

Flyers edge Hawks 4-3 in O.T. to make series out of it afterall

PHILADELPHIA—Anyone who expected a quick Stanley Cup Finals, now can understand it may be quite the opposite. Claude Giroux banged in a rebound at 5:59 of overtime and the Philadelphia Flyers got their first ever Playoff win over the Blackhawks 4-3. The Hawks still lead the series two games to one with game four Friday here at the Wachovia Center and game five is now a certainty at the United Center Sunday night. As expected the sellout was loud and rambunctious as the Blackhawks appeared to have an early edge in play but the game remained scoreless until Marian Hossa was sent off for slashing at 13:54. The Flyers took advantage 1:04 later when Danny Briere tipped in a Scott Hartnell shot. Considering the fact that Bill McCreary and Dan O’Halloran, who did not call a thing against Philadelphia in the United Center,it was a shocker that McCreary sent Dan Carcillo off for charging at 18:05,and he singled out Byfuglien for roughing at the 20:00 mark when about three players on each side got into shoving matches. It was still 1-0 when the second period started and the Hawks killed off Byfuglien’s penalty. Then at 2:49, Duncan Keith beat a partially screened Michael Leighton at 2:49 with a slap shot that the goalie never saw.Patrick Kane got his first point of the series with an assist along with Hossa. Again, Byfuglien was picked out by McCreary and send off for a questionable slashing call at 9:31 This was costly as Chris Pronger took a shot that was tipped by Scott Hartnell, it bounced behind Antti Niemi, and it skidded along the goal line, but the goal light did not go on and play continued even though the sound operator hit the ‘horn’ button. When play stopped.they reviewed it a awarded the goal at 9:55. Once again however, the Hawks struck from out of nowhere when Brent Sopel took a shot from the right point that Leighton again did not appear to ever see and it went past his right side into the net to tie the game 2-2 at 17:52. The goal was Sopel’s first in the playoffs and John Madden had the lone helper. The Blackhawks had a 12-7 shots on goal advantage in the second period giving them a 21-16 edge. The Hawks got their first lead of the game, albeit a short lived one when Jonathan Toews hit Kane in stride on a clean breakaway an d he wristed one past Leighton at 2:50,but that advantage only lasted twenty seconds as Claude Giroux fired a shot and the rebound went to Ville Leino who has an easy tip in to tie the game 3-3. Once the game went to overtime, the Flyers thought they have a game winner a few minutes in, but after a replay review,it was confirmed that the puck did not cross the goal line. The stay of execution was short lived however,

NOTES—The attendance of 20,297 was not only the largest Flyers Home crowd over, but the largest ever in the State of Pennsylvania to watch a hockey game…..Before the game, a tape of Kate Smith single God Bless America was played at the same time a live singer was also performing the song…..The only shot on goal in overtime for Philadelphia was on Guroux’s goal. The Hawks had two SOG on Leighton. Totals shots for the game favored the Flyers 32-27……Philadelphia was 2-3 on the power play while the Blackhawks were 0-3.

Cubs-Pirates rained out in Pittsburgh, make up is Monday

PITTSBURGH—The Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates lost a wasted evening and a scheduled day off. Zach Duke lost a chance to match up against Stephen Strasburg. The Cubs-Pirates game finally was postponed due to unplayable field conditions along the warning track after a rain delay of 3 hours, 12 minutes on Wednesday.Heavy rain that fell for about two hours overwhelmed PNC Park’s drainage system, causing standing water more than a foot deep to accumulate on the outfield track from foul line to foul line. The game will be made up at 12:35 p.m. Monday. Both teams are off Thursday, but the Pirates already had played the maximum 20 games in 20 days allowed under MLB’s labor agreement.Even though both teams play in the NL Central, the Cubs weren’t scheduled to visit Pittsburgh again this season. It hadn’t rained for more than an hour when the game was called off, after managers Lou Piniella and John Russell, the umpires and various Pirates executives, including president Frank Coonelly, watched the grounds crew struggle to move the pools of water. With more heavy rain expected to start falling later in the evening, the game was called off even though the infield and outfield appeared to be playable. The PNC Park outfield and infield drainage systems are designed to handle monsoon-type rains, and the only visible standing water on the field was created when the infield tarp was removed in left field. But the rain was so heavy for so long, the water pooled on the warning tracks, where there is no drainage.Duke, who has lost eight consecutive decisions against the Cubs, will be pushed back to start Friday against San Francisco, with Paul Maholm pitching Saturday and Ross Ohlendorf on Sunday.Because of the rainout, Duke won’t make his scheduled start Tuesday against Strasburg in the Nationals’ rookie’s highly anticipated major league debut.

His left eye swollen, Vladimir Guerrero looked as if he had just gone 12 rounds. He insisted, he’s fine. The Texas Rangers are looking pretty good, too, at the moment even if their star is a bit banged up.Matt Treanor homered and drove in a career-high four runs, and the Rangers beat the White Sox 9-5 on Wednesday after losing Guerrero to an eye injury during batting practice.Guerrero, the designated hitter, was scratched from the lineup after a ball he hit ricocheted off the top of the cage and struck him above the left eye. X-rays taken at a hospital showed no structural damage, and the eight-time All-Star insisted through an interpreter he could have pinch-hit if needed, no matter how bad he looked. He said his vision is fine and laughed when someone asked what round they stopped the fight.Even without Guerrero, Texas still managed to pound Gavin Floyd (2-6). Treanor capped a three-run first with a two-run bases-loaded double, and led off the third with his third homer. He was also robbed in the sixth when right fielder Carlos Quentin raced back for a lunging catch on his sacrifice fly.Texas’ Michael Young had three hits, including doubles in the first two innings, and drove in three runs while scoring two. Hamilton had his second straight three-hit game, and the Rangers had 12 hits after getting 19 the previous night in a 9-6 win.Paul Konerko hit two home runs off Scott Feldman late in the game, giving him 16 this season. He went deep twice at Texas on April 29 and has 26 multi-homer games in his career. For Konerko, this was just another sickening loss.Feldman (3-5) got his second win in three starts, allowing five runs and eight hits in a season-high eight innings.Floyd lasted 2 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs. It was the sixth time an opponent scored at least five runs against him, and the Rangers had their way even though they didn’t have their slugger. The injury to Guerrero, who’s batting .335 with 12 homers and is second in the majors with 44 RBI, set a bad tone, but the AL West leaders were able to get by for at least one night.

NOTES—With Guerrero out, LF Hamilton moved into cleanup spot with Young going from 3B to DH and Andres Blanco starting at 3B and batting eighth…….RHP Tommy Hunter is scheduled to make his first start of the season against Tampa Bay on Saturday, after being slowed in spring training with a left oblique strain and sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City…..Bobby Jenks, who strained his calf running on Friday, worked the ninth in his first appearance in a week. “Everything’s good,” he said before the game. And manager Ozzie Guillen reiterated his role wasn’t about to change even though he entered Wednesday’s game with a 6.35 ERA.Piniella said his pitching plans were indefinite and would be discussed on the plane ride to Houston, where the Cubs open a three-game series Friday. One problem is Ted Lilly would be in line to face the Pirates for the fourth time this season on Monday, which Piniella wants to avoid.Carlos Zambrano, the former ace who shifted to the bullpen early in the season, will make his first start since April 20 in Houston. He had been scheduled to pitch Thursday.A three-city trip for the Cubs now becomes a four-city journey, from Pittsburgh to Houston back to Pittsburgh and then to Milwaukee for a three-game series starting Tuesday. Before the game was called, one lightning bolt rattled the upper deck, causing fans to move en masse to lower levels. Lightning crashes periodically shook PNC Park, where the Pirates had not lost a game to weather this season. The Pirates lead the season series 7-1, winning all five games played in Pittsburgh.

Rangers smoke Sox,Floyd 9-5

His left eye swollen, Vladimir Guerrero looked as if he had just gone 12 rounds. He insisted, he’s fine. The Texas Rangers are looking pretty good, too, at the moment even if their star is a bit banged up.Matt Treanor homered and drove in a career-high four runs, and the Rangers beat the White Sox 9-5 on Wednesday after losing Guerrero to an eye injury during batting practice.Guerrero, the designated hitter, was scratched from the lineup after a ball he hit ricocheted off the top of the cage and struck him above the left eye. Sox fail to hold 4-0 lead, Rangers pound out 19 hits and win 9-6

Ian Kinsler and the Texas Rangers wore out Mark Buehrle and wiped out an early four-run deficit.Kinsler had two hits and drove in three runs and Craig Gentry hit a two-run single in a five-run sixth to lead the Rangers to a 9-6 comeback victory over the White Sox on Tuesday night.Josh Hamilton and David Murphy each had three hits for the Rangers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.Former Cub Rich Harden (3-1) hung around long enough to get the victory, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out one and allowed three walks.Buehrle (3-6) couldn’t hold on to an early 4-0 lead. Buehrle was tagged for four runs on four hits in the sixth inning.Rangers reliever Frank Francisco struck out the side in order in the seventh and Darren Oliver struck out two for a perfect eighth inning. But closer Neftali Feliz loaded the bases in the ninth with one out before getting Alexei Ramirez to popout and Omar Vizquel to fly to center for his 14th save in 16 opportunities.Justin Smoak also had a pinch-hit RBI single and a solo home run for Texas.Carlos Quentin homered for the Sox.With one out in the sixth inning and leading 4-2, Buehrle gave up four consecutive singles. With the bases loaded, Gentry, who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, lined a single up the middle to score Joaquin Arias and Murphy to end Buehrle’s outing.Michael Young followed with a sacrifice fly off reliever Sergio Santos to put the Rangers ahead and Kinsler capped off a five-run inning with a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Rangers a 7-4 lead.Gordon Beckham’s RBI single and Paul Konerko’s bases loaded walk cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth. The Rangers got some insurance on Smoak’s pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh inning off White Sox reliever J.J. Putz, and Smoak’s homer off Scott Linebrink in the ninth.Buehrle made his first start since being ejected by umpire Joe West for flipping his glove after being called for his second balk of the game in the second inning of Wednesday’s win at Cleveland. He allowed six runs on a season-high 12 hits. Although he did not give up a run in the first inning he threw 37 pitches. In the second inning, Harden gave up a leadoff home run to Quentin. He then allowed three consecutive singles to Ramirez, Vizquel and Beckham. Ramirez scored on Beckham’s single and Vizquel scored on A.J. Pierzynski’s groundout to give the White Sox a 4-0 lead.

NOTES—Rangers RHP(and former White Sox hurler) Brandon McCarthy threw a bullpen session on Tuesday in Oklahoma City. If the bullpen session went well McCarthy could be activated off the minor league disabled list and be used as a reliever for Triple-A Oklahoma by the end of the week. … Before the game, the White Sox placed Mark Teahen on the 15-day DL with a fractured right middle finger. INF Brent Lillibridge was called up from Triple-A Charlotte took his spot on the roster.

Cubs lose ANOTHER one to Pirates as Jones homers again.

PITTSBURGH—The hometown kid’s first home run helped the Pirates do what they do best,at least this season — beat the Cubs.Pittsburgh-area native Neil Walker hit a two-run homer to the deepest part of the ballpark in left-center to put the Pirates ahead in the eighth and they beat the Cubs for the seventh time this season, 3-2 on Tuesday.Walker, the Pirates’ first-round draft choice in 2004 who went to the high school that won the Western Pennsylvania district championship Tuesday night, hit a 0-1 pitch from Ted Lilly (1-5) with Andrew McCutchen on and one out.The Pirates improved to 7-1 against the Cubs this season — they’re 15-30 against everyone else — and have won nine of their past 10 against the Cubs overall.Xavier Nady — one of several backups in the Cubs lineup — had four hits, including his third home run, but they lost for the fourth time in five games.Pittsburgh’s Garrett Jones homered for the second consecutive day, Joel Hanrahan (2-1) pitched a perfect top of the eighth and Octavio Dotel a perfect ninth for his 12th save.Lou Piniella, trying desperately to find a lineup that will produce consistent offense, juggled his starters again. The Cubs had scored only nine runs in their previous four games. No fewer than four Cubs regulars did not start – and that doesn’t even include Ryan Theriot, who was recently benched for Mike Fontenot at second base. Nady started for Derrek Lee at first, Jeff Baker replaced Aramis Ramirez at third, Tyler Colvin played center over Marlon Byrd and catcher Geovany Soto sat in favor of Koyie Hill.It didn’t work. The lineup shuffle seemed to pay off when Nady homered with Kosuke Fukudome aboard and one out in the third. It gave the Visitors a 2-0 lead and twice as many runs as it had scored in four of the previous five games. The Cubs’ most recent three wins had come by shutout. Jones erased that possibility when he led off the fourth with his seventh home run.An inning prior, Pittsburgh had an apparent run taken away when Lasting Milledge was thrown out trying to stretch his two-out hit into a triple before starting pitcher Jeff Karstens crossed home plate. For a team with its own offensive troubles — the Pirates, at 15th, rank two spots below the Cubs in the National League in runs — wasting an opportunity to score appeared too much to overcome until the eighth.Lilly hadn’t officially pitched more than seven innings since September, but threw a season-high 112 pitches Tuesday. After one out in the eighth, Lilly walked McCutchen before Walker hit his fastball into the seats to give him at least one hit in six of his eight games since being called up last week.

NOTES—Lilly has gone at least six innings and allowed three earned runs or less in each of his past five starts.

Hossa and Eager goals lift Hawks to 2-1 win over Flyers and 2-0 series lead

So now the Blackhawks know they can beat the Philadelphia Flyers in both high scoring games and squeakers. Marian Hossa and Ben Eager scored the two Hawk goals :28 apart late in the second period and that led to a 2-1 win and a two games to one Stanley Cup Finals series lead. That means the Hawks are now just two win away from their first Stanley Cup in 49 years. Antti Niemi was outstanding, especially after giving up the only Flyer goal,by Simon Gagne at 5:20 of the third period while Patrick Sharp was serving a tripping penalty. After that, the Flyers put on all the pressure they could but Niemi shut the door. Things got a bit dicey in the final minute when Michael Leighton was pulled for an extra attacker. It looked as though Sharp was going to score into an empty net, but his shot hit the right post with about 25 second remaining. From there, the Hawks were able to run the clock out.
NOTES—Attendance was 22275….Among those in the stands were Derrick Rose of the Bulls, and former Hawk(and Flyer)Jeremy Roenick….The Flyers outshout the Hawks 33-26….Game three is Wednesday night at 7:05pm(CDT) in Philadelphia.

Cub bats still walk the plank against Bucs who win 2-1

PITTSBURGH—The Pittsburgh Pirates can’t seem to beat any opponent regularly except one. The Cubs, a team with a payroll that’s more than three times larger than Pittsburgh’s, are getting very tired of being the exception.Tired enough, it appears, to start making some changes.Pinch-hitter Bobby Crosby singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Garrett Jones homered and the Pirates ended a five-game losing streak by beating the Cubs 2-1 on Monday. The Pirates were coming off a 1-6 road trip and had lost nine of 11, only to beat the Cubs for the eighth time in nine meetings dating to the final week of last season. The Pirates were 6-1 in May against the Cubs but were 5-17 against the rest of the NL.Baffling? The Cubs think so.For now, manager Lou Piniella plans to give a slumping Derrek Lee the day off Tuesday, the same tactic that didn’t work Monday with Ryan Theriot. Theriot, who entered during a double switch in the eighth, struck out to end the game and is in a 5 for 36 slump. He’s not the only Cubs hitter who isn’t hitting. Lee is 1 for 14, Marlon Byrd is 7 for 46 and Aramis Ramirez is batting .162, the majors’ second-lowest average for an everyday player. For most of the season, the Pirates — who were a season-low 11 games below .500 before winning — have felt the same way. They won despite scoring three runs or fewer for the 11th time in 12 games.Jones’ ninth homer of the season tied it at 1 in the sixth, and he doubled leading off the eighth against reliever Sean Marshall (5-2). After Lastings Milledge grounded out and Ryan Doumit was intentionally walked, Crosby lined a 3-2 pitch by Marshall into center field to score Jones.Evan Meek (3-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the victory, and Octavio Dotel finished up for his 11th save in 13 opportunities.Cubs starter Randy Wells pitched five shutout innings on two days’ rest after failing to retire a batter while giving up six hits on 16 pitches during a 7-1 loss Friday to St. Louis. Wells left with a 1-0 lead, but that disappeared in three pitches by reliever James Russell as Jones homered into the right-field seats.Pirates starter Ross Ohlendorf, 0-3 this season and winless in 10 starts since Aug. 18, also pitched effectively. He struck out six, walked two while allowing three hits over seven innings, and a mixup by the Pirates’ outfield led to the only run he allowed.Soriano tripled into the left-center gap with one out in the second on a fly ball that center fielder Andrew McCutchen was in position to catch, before he pulled up at the last moment to avoid colliding with left fielder Ryan Church. Soriano, who came in batting .211 in his previous 12 games, then scored on Geovany Soto’s grounder.Despite the Soriano fly ball misplay, McCutchen roamed far to his right to slide on his left hip and catch Soriano’s line drive in the sixth inning. In the eighth, third baseman Andy LaRoche likely prevented a run from scoring by making an excellent play on Mike Fontenot’s two-out grounder with a runner on third.

NOTES—Wells became the first Cubs pitcher to start twice in four days since Mike Bielecki on June 12 & 15, 1990…..Cubs pitching prospect Andrew Cashner made his major-league debut, retiring Ronny Cedeno on a pop-up to end the eighth on the only pitch he threw……The Cubs are 0-4 in Pittsburgh.

Rays bid to win series is Nixed by Sox

ST. PETERSBURG—Jayson Nix hit his first career grand slam, helping the White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-5 on Sunday to split a four-game series with the AL East-leaders.Nix put the White Sox up 7-3 on his homer in the sixth. He replaced Mark Teahen, who left in the fourth with a right middle finger injury, at third base.Ben Zobrist homered and had two RBI for the Rays, who went 2-5 on a seven-game homestand. Tampa Bay, with the major’s best record (34-17), is just 15-12 at home. The Sox, at 22-28, have not yet reached the high expectations coming out of spring training and Ozzie Guillen feels the team has little time to impress general manager Ken Williams heading into the non-waiver trade deadline in July.Jake Peavy (4-4) allowed five runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings.Shields (5-3) went 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs and 11 hits. After Matt Thornton allowed one hit over 2 1/3 scoreless innings, Tony Pena got the final two outs in the ninth in a non-save situation.White Sox closer Bobby Jenks, who tweaked his right calf running on Friday, was not available and is day to day.Zobrist had a third-inning solo homer and added a sacrifice fly during a two-run fifth. The Rays pulled to 7-5 on RBI singles by Reid Brignac and Carl Crawford in the sixth.Alex Rios hit an RBI single in a two-run first and had a solo shot during the third for the Sox. Omar Vizquel hit an eighth-inning run-scoring double.

NOTES—Tampa Bay players will be wearing hockey uniforms on the flight to Toronto for Monday night’s game with the Blue Jays as part of a road trip theme. Many are sporting  Blackhawks’ sweaters, which the Stanley Cup finalists sent to the Rays for free. “It’s all in fun,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “It’s cool.” … Gordon Beckman, who hit .167 with no extra base hits in May, got the day off. … Rays SS Jason Bartlett, who strained his right hamstring Saturday, didn’t play. He is also expected to sit out Monday’s game. … Teahen will have X-rays taken on Monday.
