Yawn! Bears put Fans to sleep in 14-9 pre-season loss to Big Red

Lovie Smith pretty much said it all when he admitted after this lackluster 14-9 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Soldier Field that the Bears “are not playing good football yet, but we will”. Well, the fans in attendance, who booed much of the night, did not leave convinced.

The third NFL Exhibition game these days is always considered the most significant one of the four played. The Bears had the two best scoring chances in the opening period, but on the opening drive,Jay Cutler had a pass that was intended for Johnny Knox picked off by the Cardinals Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at the Cards 31, and then a nice drive that was stalled when Cutler was sacked at the Arizona 20, came up empty when Robbie Gould had a 38 yard field goal try blocked by DE Calais Campbell. The quarter ended scoreless with Cutler getting sacked twice.Lance Briggs went off with an ankle injury during the quarter.

After the blocked field goal,Derek Anderson, who started for the Cardinals instead of Matt Leinhart, drove his team 72 yards in 10 plays and hit Stephen Williams at the ten and he outmaneuvered two Bears and ran into the end zone for a 27 yard touchdown play with 10:47 left in the half. Chester Taylor ran around right end for 32 yards which set up a 48 yard try by Gould that hit the left upright. After Cutler’s second interception of the half(by Greg Toler),Leinhart replaced Anderson for Arizona. The Cards drove to the Bears 7,but Beanie Wells fumbled and Zack Bowman recovered. That kept the score 7-0 at halftime. The Cardinals took advantage of a short field following a Brad Maynard punt and took over at the Bears 48. Leinhart took them the distance in five plays and hit Steve Breaston at the two,and he went airborne to score the Cards second TD with 6:38 to go in the third period.

Dan LeFevour took over from Cutler with six minutes left in the third quarter. He took the Bears on a 22 yard 9 play drive that ended with a Gould 22 yard field goal with 10:03 left in the fourth quarter.LeFevour then took the Bears 54 yards on a Cards defense that featured many who likely will be bagging groceries in a few weeks, and he hit Juaquin Iglesias for a three yard TD with 4:43 left, but the two point try was no good when LeFevour’s pass intended for Garrett Wolfe was incomplete. That ended the scoring.

NOTES—Attendance was 53,151 with 7683 no shows…..Parts of the field were in “mid-season” form–BAD! There were div-its between the hash marks, and it caused Cutler to slip and go down while trying to scramble midway through the first quarter. Oh that Park District!…Cutler left midway through the third quarter after hitting 10-20 passes for 129 yards, throwing two interceptions, getting sacked four times, and a QB rating of 31.0.

The Sox fell 4½ games back of AL Central-leading Minnesota, which beat Seattle 1-0.Konerko hit an RBI single off David Robertson in the ninth to cut it to 12-9, but Mariano Rivera closed it out for his 26th save in 28 opportunities. After Carlos Quentin grounded into a double play, Rivera yielded a single to Ramon Castro and walked Andruw Jones before Mark Teahen lined out to second to end the game. The Yankees got off to a fast start against John Danks (12-9), belting two-run homers in each of the first three innings to build a 6-1 lead. CINCINNATI—Kosuke Fukudome hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Bronson Arroyo, and the Cubs finally ended years of futility against the right-hander by beating the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Saturday night.Fukudome’s homer in the fifth inning sent Arroyo (14-8) to his first loss against the Cubs since 2007. Arroyo had won his last five decisions against the Cubs, including his two starts this season.Randy Wells (6-12) got a victory on his 28th birthday — his first win since July 23. They’ve gone 10-4 since getting swept by second-place St. Louis.Nobody on Cincinnati’s staff handles the Cubs as well as Arroyo, who has dominated the middle of their lineup. Arroyo made two other starts against the Cubs this season and didn’t allow a run in 13 innings, going 2-0.Nobody in the Cubs’ lineup had worse career numbers against Arroyo than Fukudome, who was 1 for 16 coming in. The Dodgers also could let him go — with his consent — and the White Sox would simply assume his salary. Or, Los Angeles could keep Ramirez and try to make a run at the playoffs with him. Former White Sox outfielder Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Yankees, who have dropped three of four but remained tied with Tampa Bay for the AL East lead. Brett Gardner had two hits and drove in a run.Burnett (9-12) struggled once again, dropping to 0-4 with a 7.80 ERA in five starts this month and putting his spot in the rotation in jeopardy.Five of the first six White Sox batters reached. Reds cool off Cubs. Bruce nails three

CINCINNATI—Jay Bruce homered in three consecutive at-bats Friday night, matching his career high by driving in five runs, and Cincinnati beat the Chicago Cubs 7-1 to keep its two-week playoff surge going full speed. The Reds got knocked out of first place in the NL Central when the St. Louis Cardinals came to town and swept a series Aug. 9-11. They’ve pulled themselves together quickly, going 10-3 since then. They’ve led the division for the last 13 days, sparking thoughts of their first playoff appearance since 1995.The way things are going, why not? Johnny Cueto (12-4) got his first win since serving a seven-game suspension for kicking a couple of Cardinals during a brawl in their series. The right-hander gave up a run and six hits in eight innings, striking out eight without walking a batter.Bruce’s first three-homer game since Little League left him with 16 this season. He also homered on the first pitch from the left-hander in his next at-bat, a three-run shot in the fifth.Chris Valaika, who made his big league debut on Tuesday, followed Bruce’s homer with his first in the majors. Manny sits as Dodgers rout Brewers 7-1. Is he headed for Sox next? Galardo robbed after loss

Milwaukee Brewers logo
MILWAUKEE—The Los Angeles Dodgers, still hoping to make a playoff run, used six pitchers to two hit the Milwaukee Brewers for a 7-1 win. Many eyes were here at Miller Park to be on Manny Ramirez who had doubled twice Wednesday night, but with this being a day game after a night contest, Joe Torre always sits him out. The possible future White Sox DH was replaced instead by two time former Sox and ex Brewer Scott Podsednik. Many other former Chicagoans also were in this one as Ryan Theriot batted second for L.A. and Reed Johnson replaced the ejected Andre Ethier in RF in the bottom of the 6th. Casey McGehee, whom the Cubs gave away, continues to be a mainstay for the Crew. Podsednik led off the ballgame with a single to right off Yovani Gallardo and Theriot followed with a long ground rule double that one hopped the wall in center field, sending Podsednik to third. One out later,Matt Kemp grounded to short to score Podsednik. In the Brewers 4th, Price Fielder, whom most folks up here feel is on his “farewell tour”(He’s signed through next year, but is expected to be traded this off season),lifted his 26th homer to right field to tie the game 1-1. That lasted until Podsednik put the Dodgers back in front with a two out single off the glove of Rickie Weeks in the top of the 5th which allowed Brad Ausmus to score. In the top of the 6th, with two gone, James Loney walked, and Casey Blake homered to right field to up the L.A. lead to 4-1. Gallardo was knocked out as the Dodgers broke it open in the 7th. Pitcher Kenley Jensen walked, then three straight former Chicagoans singled.Podsednik got his third hit of the day.Theriot then singled in Jensen and when CF Chris Dickerson’s throw got past catcher Jonathan Lucroy, the two runners advanced to second and third on the error.Johnson singled home Podsednik and Theriot scored on a wild pitch to cap the inning and extend the Los Angeles lead to 7-1.So the question now is, will Ramirez be leaving “MannyWood” and heading for “U.S.MANullar Field”?

NOTES—The weekday crowd on a perfect day was 32,333.The roof was open…..The Sausage race was won by the Chorizo in a runaway…..Gallardo and a clubhouse attendant were robbed at gunpoint early Friday, hours after the loss to LA.Brewers spokesman Tyler Barnes confirmed that Gallardo and Alex Sanchez were robbed, but both were doing fine and did not want to discuss the incident.A police spokeswoman did not immediately return messages seeking details.According to a report, an armed man approached the two in a supermarket parking lot demanding money and jewelry and that Sanchez was hit in the head, but not seriously injured.Gallardo signed a $30.1 million, five-year contract extension earlier this year. He’s now 11-6 with a 3.50 ERA after the Thursday loss.

Colvin quickly stole second and was doubled home by Castro to leave Marquis on the hook for the loss.Marquis was making his fourth start since returning from a nearly four-month stint on the disabled list and having surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow and he ended up with by far his best performance of the year. It was the first time this season Marquis had pitched more than five innings. He lowered his ERA from 11.39 to 8.79.Dempster has now won four of his five starts this month. He had a no decision in his last outing against Atlanta on Friday, giving up two runs on four hits in eight innings.Ramirez game the Cubs a 3-0 cushion with his two-out home run to left field in the eighth, scoring Castro.
