U of Minnesota asks fans for help in digging out TCF Bank Stadium

MINNEAPOLIS — Backed by dump trucks and loaders, dozens of workers hoisting shovels and blowers attacked the snowdrifts covering the University of Minnesota’s outdoor stadium Wednesday in a determined push to have it ready to replace the snow-damaged Metrodome for next week’s matchup between the Vikings and Bears. As the work began in earnest, NFL officials toured TCF Bank Stadium to make sure it was safe for fans and meets other league requirements. The two biggest concerns, according to assistant university athletic director Scott Ellison, were whether all the snow can be removed in time and whether the frozen field could be softened to a level that won’t hurt the players.

The deflated Metrodome cannot be repaired in time for the Vikings’ home season finale.

“I’m completely confident we can have a game here Monday night,” Ellison said after crews had already removed 26 truckloads of snow and totally cleared 17 of the 52 seating sections.

He said the NFL was developing a plan to treat the field with warming chemicals to soften it, and looking into laying a tarp across the playing field that would have some type of heating element underneath. The NFL will make the final call on where the game will be played. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told The Associated Press that “we support the plan to play the game at the University of Minnesota stadium and are assisting the Vikings and the university on preparations.”

The Vikings decided to hold Monday night’s NFC North game at the home of the Golden Gophers after inspectors said there wasn’t enough time to repair the dome’s tattered and deflated roof. It fell early Sunday under the weight of about 17 inches of freshly fallen snow, forcing the Vikings to play the Giants at Ford Field in Detroit this past Monday. University officials promised 16-hour days of plowing and shoveling — they asked for volunteers to work Thursday through Sunday — and were nervously eyeing a forecast that called for the possibility of another few inches of snow by Thursday night. Inside the stadium, workers shoveled snow onto long slides that snaked down the bleachers and poured it onto the field, where loaders scooped it into dump trucks.Ellison said the goal was to have the stadium game-ready by the end of the day Sunday.School officials, the Vikings and the NFL were negotiating a host of other logistical questions, from whether beer would be available at the normally dry stadium (undecided) to how a 50,000-seat stadium could accommodate 54,000 Vikings season-ticket holders (unclear). The team said it was “working to accommodate fans’ questions” but acknowledged it would take time to get the answers in such a “fluid situation.” Ellison said the school was looking into setting up more seats for the game — the Metrodome has a football seating capacity of about 63,000.Ellison said that owners of the Gopher stadium’s 38 luxury suites would have first right to use them at Monday night’s game. The outdoor game will be a test for Minnesotans no longer accustomed to braving the frigid December air to watch pro football. The last outdoor Vikings game at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, which the Metrodome replaced, was held on Dec. 20, 1981 — 29 years to the day before this Monday’s Vikings-Bears matchup. The Vikings lost that game to the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 10-6.Lester Bagley, the Vikings vice president for public affairs, predicted Monday’s game would go better for the team.

“We’re confident that we’re going to have a great experience,” Bagley told the AP. “It’s our celebration of our 50th season, and we’re going to end it the way we began. We beat the Bears in our first game, and we’re going to beat them again this year.”

Engineers from Birdair Inc., the Amherst, N.Y.-based manufacturer of the Metrodome’s roof, discovered damage Tuesday that was worse than initially expected. The company gave the dome’s owners, the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, two options to repair the damage: Mending the torn panels, a short-term solution that would leave the panels still needing to be replaced, or replacing the panels with new material, a more long-term solution that would also be more time-consuming.Commission spokesman Pat Milan said cold temperatures were slowing repairs and that it could be three to seven days before a timeline emerges for using the Metrodome again. The question is largely moot for the Vikings, since the Bears game is the home finale and Minnesota won’t make the playoffs.Wolter said it was not clear ow much it will cost to get TCF Bank Stadium ready for the game and then to host it. He said the Vikings vowed to cover the entire tab, and that the school has a budget of $250,000 for each Gophers game. The total cost with all preparations could reach $700,000 or more, he said.Workers at the campus stadium Wednesday were hired through temporary agencies, but as of Thursday the school planned to pay $10 an hour to anyone who showed up outside the stadium willing to work.Quintin Spencer of Minneapolis was manning a shovel in the parking lot of the Gopher stadium, helping empty the trucks carrying snow from inside the stadium. The 43-year-old said he’s been out of a steady job for several years and was happy to get paid for helping make a Vikings home game possible.

“That’s a real good thing,” Spencer said. “I just hope they win, so that a part of this memory is that they won the game.”

Pats blow Bears away 36-7. First half 33 points most ever allowed by Bears in any half at home

In the first half, the didn’t and they did in those two departments, and the New England Patriots hammered the Bears 36-7 to bring the Bears five game winning streak to a grinding halt. Some marquee game huh? Since Green Bay lost 7-3 in Detroit, the Bears kept their one game NFC North lead on the Packers who will visit these Pats next week while the Bears will face the Vikings at a location not known at this time since the Metrodome’s roof collapsed causing Monday night’s Vikes-Giants game to be moved to Ford Field in Detroit.
With awful conditions, 26* temperatures and +9* wind chill factor with NW winds blowing at 32 MPH, the Bears won the toss, deferred and New England received and started on their own 31.After a five yard pass from Brady to Wes Welker, BenJarvus Green-Ellis was hit for a 3 yard loss, and Brady was then sacked by Israel Idonoje for a two yard loss. This was the Bears last ‘stop’ of the first half. Lovie Smith did challenge the call on the field, but Referee Mike Carey ruled that Knox was on McCourty’s foot, rather than the ground as the ball came out,so the call stood and it was 21-0. S.Graham then booted a 25 yard field goal to turn this into a 27-0 rout.Another Bears three and out forced Maynard to punt and Edelman went all 71 yards, yet only a holding call on the Patriots nullified it and the ball was placed at the NE 20.On the last play of the half, the Bears were caught napping when Brady threw to Branch who side stepped two Bears defenders and ran down the west sideline 59 yards to score on the last play of the half. Graham’s PAT was wide right, but it was 33-0 at halftime and a good majority of spectators headed for the exits. This was also the most points the Bears have ever given up in any first half.
Manning returned the second half kickoff 25 yards to his own 35,but the Bears went three and out. Maynard bobbled the snap, picked it up and he got a short squib kick to the NE 37 for just 19 yards.
