Hall of Fame says Dawson will go in as an Expo, not Cub.

Cubs Round Reflective Decal Vinyl Sticker round reflective sticker has the team colors and logo of the ChicagoAndre Dawson will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Montreal Expo, despite his preference to go in as a Cub.The hall announced its decision Wednesday. Dawson said that he thought hall officials would discuss the issue with him in detail before the decision was made. He said he wanted a chance to tell them “what really catapulted me to Hall of Fame status and pretty much what my preference was but I think their decision had been made. It was a little gut-wrenching for me to hear that but it’s their decision.I’m disappointed,” Dawson said. “I can proudly say that because Chicago was my preference.” Dawson’s official statement issued by the hall was more circumspect.

“I respect the Hall of Fame’s decision to put an Expos logo on my cap, and I understand their responsibility to make sure the logo represents the greatest impact in my career,” Dawson said in Wednesday’s statement. “Cubs fans will always be incredibly important in my heart, and I owe them so much for making my time in Chicago memorable, as did the fans in Montreal, Boston and South Florida, my home. But knowing that I’m on the Hall of Fame team is what’s most important, as it is the highest honor I could imagine.”

The induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y., is July 25.

Dawson played his first 11 seasons with Montreal, batting .285 with 225 home runs and 838 RBI. He was named an All-Star three times and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1977. He played six seasons with the Cubs, where he won the 1987 NL MVP award after batting .287 with 49 home runs and 137 RBI. He also played two years each for Boston and Florida before retiring in 1996.

Dawson said he thought he “would have a little bit more input or I would carry or merit some sort of weight” as to whether he would go into the hall as a Cub or Expo.”It was to my understanding they would make the determination at the consent of sitting down and discussing it with you prior to making the determination and I just thought it would carry a little bit more weight than it did,” he said.

Earlier this month, Hall president Jeff Idelson said “you want the logo to represent where this guy made his greatest impact. He was impactful in Montreal. He was impactful in Chicago, and to a much lesser extent Boston and Florida, but it’s more of a case sitting down and collectively make a decision.”

The hall noted that Dawson had 1,575 of his 2,774 hits as an Expo, won six of his eight Gold Glove awards in Montreal and led the Expos to their only postseason series win with a five-game victory over the Phillies in 1981. Idelson also said it’s the museum’s responsibility to “properly interpret the game’s history.”

The Expos franchise, which played its first season in 1969, became the Washington Nationals before the 2005 season. Asked if he believed the hall wanted to preserve Expos history, Dawson said: “The hall clearly stated their major concern was the history of the game.”

In 1999, there was a stir caused by reports that Tampa Bay would compensate the newly retired Wade Boggs if his Hall of Fame plaque bore a Devil Rays logo. Boggs denied it, but the hall two years later revoked the right of a player to choose the logo on the cap on his plaque. Boggs was inducted in 2005 and his plaque sports a Boston Red Sox logo.Dawson is the only player for 2010 to receive at least 75 percent of the vote to be inducted into the hall. He will be inducted along with manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey. Herzog’s plaque will feature a St. Louis Cardinals logo, and the Royals, Rangers and Angels will all be listed.

Hawks bounce lowly Oilers

Fernando Pisani and Ryan Potulny scored for the Oilers, who are in the midst of their worst losing streak since a 12-game skid three years ago. The franchise record for consecutive losses is 14, set in 1993. The Oilers have won once in their last 19 and just one of their last 15 at home. The Blackhawks are almost the complete opposite of the Oilers, with exactly double the points in the standings at 76 to Edmonton’s 38 and now just two points behind the San Jose Sharks for first place overall. The Hawks were up 1-0 before most of the fans were in their seats, scoring just 44 seconds in as Toews beat Jeff Deslauriers with a wrister on the game’s first shot. The Blackhawks went up 2-0 five minutes into the second. Kane circled the Oilers’ zone before finally dishing it in front to Brouwer, who scored his 15th of the season. The Hawks made it 3-0 midway through the second when Keith’s point shot through traffic was tipped in by Byfuglien. The Blackhawks connected on the game’s first power-play opportunity to go up 4-0. Hossa hammered home the third rebound off a mad scramble in front of Deslauriers. The Oilers finally beat Cristobal Huet with 20 seconds left in the period. Moreau tipped a shot through Huet’s legs before Pisani knocked it in to make the score 4-1 score heading to the third. Edmonton got to within two goals six minutes into the final period when Patrick O’Sullivan stole the puck from Niklas Hjalmarsson deep in the Hawk zone. He fed it to Potulny in front, who beat Huet five-hole.With the Oilers pressing late, Huet made a magnificent diving save to keep the score at 4-2.It was the third meeting between the two teams with the Hawks also winning the first two…..The Oilers have only won two home games since starting goalie Nikolai Khabibulin went down with a back injury just prior to their last game against the Blackhawks on Nov. 21…..With Edmonton defenseman Ladislav Smid and Steve Staios both out with concussions, the Oilers once again recalled Taylor Chorney from Springfield for the game…..Blackhawks second-line centre Dave Bolland, who has been out several months after back surgery, has reportedly joined the team and begun skating….Hossa is tied for the league lead with three short-handed goals. The entire Edmonton team has just one this season……Kane recorded his 200th NHL point with his assist in the first period.

NU falls short against Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS—Blake Hoffarber hit four 3-pointers in the final seven-plus minutes, finishing with 20 points and lifting Minnesota to a 65-61 victory over Northwestern on Tuesday night. Lawrence Westbrook pitched in 18 points and six assists for the Gophers (13-7, 4-4 Big Ten), who broke a three-game losing streak.John Shurna led the second-half comeback for the Wildcats (14-6, 3-5) with 19 points and Michael Thompson added 15 points and six assists. Hoffarber, the conference’s leading 3-point shooter, combined for only 15 points in his last three games and went 2-for-11 from behind the arc. But he got going again just when the Gophers needed him the most.Hoffarber gave Minnesota the lead for good with just under five minutes to go at 51-49 with a 3, then hit another one on the next possession. His last was his best, when Westbrook went in the air without a clear shot and passed it to his left. Hoffarber let it fly with a hand in his face and the shot clock buzzing, and the ball swished through again for a 59-54 advantage.Serbia native Luka Mirkovic’s two free throws, with Minnesota students taunting him with a “USA! USA!” chant, cut the lead to 61-58 with 81 seconds left. Shurna could’ve tied it on Northwestern’s next possession, but the rebound went off Mirkovic’s hand and out of bounds. With three seconds left, Westbrook sealed the game with a pair of free throws. With NU staring at a game at No. 5 Michigan State on Saturday and Minnesota playing at 20th-ranked Ohio State on Sunday, both teams were in must-win mode to keep their NCAA tournament bid from falling too far off track. The Wildcats boast victories over Notre Dame and 10th-ranked Purdue and an 11-1 nonconference record, making their situation a bit less critical. The Gophers, though, have tough losses to Portland and Indiana that will hurt them with the selection committee. Their best chance for a boost slipped painfully away here on Saturday, when Michigan State took its first lead in the final 90 seconds and won 65-64.Junior point guard Al Nolen became academically ineligible last week, and his steady presence was missed as much in this game as it was against Michigan State. With only two days to shake off the frustration of that fall to the Spartans, a punch-in-the-stomach game for Minnesota sports fans that served as the undercard for the NFC championship game defeat for the Vikings, the Gophers found life after a rough shooting start to the first half.Trying too many carefree crosscourt passes, the Gophers were sloppy in the second half, letting a 13-point lead shrink while Shurna shot the Cats back into the game.Shurna gave Northwestern the lead on a fast break off a Gophers turnover, taking the ball right at Hoffarber to draw a foul that had the Williams Arena fans howling.Shurna made one of his two free throws for a 49-48 edge, setting up the frantic final minutes.

#9 Mountaineers too much for Blue Demons

ROSEMONT—Da’Sean Butler and Wellington Smith scored 14 points apiece to lead No. 9 West Virginia to a 62-46 win over DePaul on Tuesday night.Devin Ebanks also had 14 points for West Virginia (16-3, 5-2 Big East), which has won three straight after a 72-71 loss to Syracuse on Jan. 16.Leading 37-28 at the half, Smith made back-to-back 3s for West Virginia and Devin Ebanks had a putback to build the Mountaineers lead to 45-30.Will Walker led DePaul (8-12, 1-7) with 17 points. DePaul trailed by double-digits for most of the second half. After back-to-back non-conference wins against Marshall and rallying from a 12-point halftime deficit to beat Ohio State on Saturday, the Mountaineers returned to Big East play by starting the game by connecting on their first three 3-point attempts. Butler hit back-to-back 3s to start and Smith followed with another 3.Ebanks gave West Virginia a 13-2 lead on a putback and Smith extended the Moutaineers advantage to 20-4 on another 3. But DePaul answered with a 14-5 run.Walker made a 3 to get DePaul to 24-18 and Eric Wallace made two free throws to cut the West Virginia lead to 29-25. The Mountaineers finished the half by outscoring the Blue Demons 8-3 to take a 37-28 lead.Butler led West Virginia with 12 points in the first half and Walker had 13 points, connecting on 3 of 4 3-point attempts. The troubles continued for DePaul, which has lost 34 of its last 37 regular season Big East games dating back to Jan. 26, 2008. DePaul interim head coach Tracy Webster is now 1-4 since taking over for Jerry Wainwright, who was fired on Jan. 11. After ending a streak of losing 24 consecutive Big East regular-season games by beating Marquette, the Blue Demons have lost two in a row.DePaul center Krys Faber was ejected in the second half for a flagrant elbow that hit Butler in the side of the head. The beginning of the second half was delayed for about 10 minutes after the shot clock malfunctioned. The teams had an extra warmup session as the personnel at the Allstate Arena struggled to fix the problem.Mac Koshwal played after missing the last four games with a right foot injury. He finished with seven points.Darry Bryant finished with 14 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the line.

Hawks strike fast, then beat sinking Oilers 4-2

EDMONTON—The Blackhawks needed 44 seconds to take the fight out of the Edmonton Oilers.Jonathan Toews scored on the first shot of the game and the Blackhawks added to Edmonton’s misery Tuesday night, beating the Oilers 4-2 and sending the NHL’s last-place team to their 11th straight loss.Troy Brouwer, Dustin Byfuglien and Marian Hossa also scored for the Blackhawks, who are 4-2 through six games of a season-high eight-game road trip. Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith added two assists apiece.Oilers coach Pat Quinn said it was obvious what was going to happen when the Blackhawks scored on the first shot of the game.Fernando Pisani and Ryan Potulny scored for the Oilers, who are in the midst of their worst losing streak since a 12-game skid three years ago. The franchise record for consecutive losses is 14, set in 1993. Bulls beat Spurs, win third straight.

SAN ANTONIO—Derrick Rose shook off flulike symptoms to score 27 points and the Bulls won their third straight, 98-93 over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night.Kirk Hinrich added 18 points for the Bulls, who again impressively beat a Western Conference team with a winning record on their seven-game road swing. They surprised Houston and Phoenix last week.Put it another way: the Bulls have won just one fewer road game in the last four days than they have in the first three months of the season. The Bulls are now 7-15 on the road.Tony Parker scored 20 points for the Spurs, who have lost five of six. Manu Ginobili scored 14 but was denied twice while barreling to the rim in the final 33 seconds.Luol Deng made sure of that on Ginobili’s first try.Deng swatted his layup back the way Ginobili came with Spurs trailing 95-93 and 32.8 seconds left. Then down by three with 5.9 seconds left, the Spurs called Ginobili’s number again but his layup fell short.Joakim Noah, back after missing the Houston win with plantar fascitis, grabbed the rebound and roared in triumph. The Bulls had done it again on the road and now finish up their Western Conference road trip against Oklahoma City on Wednesday and New Orleans on Friday. Both teams also have winning records, but the surging Bulls aren’t playing afraid of anyone lately having won 11 of 16 after starting the season 10-17. With a win against the Thunder, the Bulls (21-22) can climb back to .500.Rose didn’t practice with the Bulls earlier Monday because of flulike symptoms that Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro described as everything from congestion to “not feeling good.” But Rose looked just fine hours later. He shot 13 of 23 from the floor and hit a pull-up jumper with 56.9 seconds left to put the Bulls ahead 93-91.The Spurs, meanwhile, continued to spiral.San Antonio lost its third straight at home, already squandering half of its six-game homestand before hitting the road for virtually the entire month of February for their annual rodeo road trip.Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has admonished his defense of late, and this won’t help. The Bulls hit 18 of their first 23 shots and stayed above 70 percent shooting for most of the first half. The Bulls finished shooting 54 percent from the floor. Noah had 11 points.Tim Duncan scored 15 points and Antonio McDyess had 14 for the Spurs.

NOTES—Newly acquired Bulls G Devin Brown was expected to join the team in Oklahoma City on Tuesday. The Bulls obtained Brown in a trade with New Orleans before the game, giving up C Aaron Gray. …The Spurs are on their third three-game slide of the season.

GROBBER’S MONDAY RANTS—Jan 25,2010

***Let the Super Bowl hype begin! The BAD NEWS it’s a two week break, not including the exhibition game known as the Pro Bowl,so the “stuff” we’ll have to listen to(or try to ignore)is already under way. It seems that when there have been just one week breaks between the Conference Title games and the Super Bowl, then the SB has usually been better played, But everything is predicated by what the TV Networks want. When the AFC and NFC Title games started at noon and 3:30 Chicago time, plenty of fans liked it better. The reason these games now start late is because the likes of Fox and CBS-TV want these later, prime time starts. This is no different that the World Series and League Championship games in Major League Baseball where there has not been a single afternoon game played in the Fall Classic since 1987(game six in 1988 would have been a day game, but the Dodgers finished off the A’s in five). The TV Networks will not budge on even played a single weekend World Series game in the evening, because they feel they can’t get the same advertising revenue. AND Major League Baseball will not step up and demand that the Networks(aka the TAIL that wags the DOG)give the masses a game or two that young kids can watch. That’s because they don’t care about ANYTHING other than $$$$$$$$.

***The GOOD NEWS is that we don’t have to put up what two full weeks of the national types(you know who they are)ramming Brett Favre down our throats. You know, the way they do the same every summer when the Yankees and Red Sox play. Don’t know who is waaaaay over hyped. Favre? of the Yanks-BoSox.

***There seems to be a paradox,or perhaps even a difference of opinion eternally with the White Sox of whether to bring the popular, but somewhat limited Jim Thome back for the 2010 season. Jermaine Dye is gone(yet still unsigned with anyone) while Thome, who has an offer from the Sox biggest challenger in the AL Central, yet not the Cubs.or anyone else has signed him yet either. Ozzie Guillen, whom loves Thome, appears to be the one who wants to move on and allow the less powerful lineup to get a chance this way. The way things now stand, the Sox figure to his fewer homers, but COULD in turn score more runs.

***The atmosphere in Evanston for Saturday night’s Northwestern-Illinois game was awesome. The sellout crowd of 8117 of course was dominated by NU fans(including students)but there were a couple of thousand Illini fans as well. Illinois took over about 8 minutes into the first half thanks to 60% shooting before half time, but the Wildcats, who blew a large lead to Illinois in the last couple of minutes last year in Evanston, then also saw a decenet half time lead vanish in Champaign on Decmber 30 before the Illini won in overtime. This time the Cats rallied, and thanks to clutch three point buckets late by Jeremy Nash,Juice Thompson and John Shurna NU won it. For the slumping Illini,it’s back to the drawing board.Coach Bruce Weber did not sound optomistic when I chatted with him as he was heading to board the bus after the game.

Favre pick again in NFC Title game as Saints beat Vikes in OT for first ever Super Bowl birth

VS.

NEW ORLEANS—They sure ain’t the Aints anymore. The New Orleans Saints are heading to their first Super Bowl after battering Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in overtime Sunday on unheralded Garrett Hartley’s 40-yard field goal.Favre threw away Minnesota’s best chance to win, tossing an interception deep in New Orleans territory in the closing seconds of regulation. Then the Saints won the coin toss and soon it was over. The team that had no home five years ago after Hurricane Katrina ravaged its city and the Superdome overcame a slew of mistakes in the biggest game the Big Easy has ever seen.

“This is for everybody in this city,” said coach Sean Payton, the architect of the Saints’ turnaround. “This stadium used to have holes in it and used to be wet. It’s not wet anymore. This is for the city of New Orleans.”

Forget the paper bag masks and that long history of losing started in 1967. Moments after Hartley’s kick, they were toasting their hometown winners on Bourbon Street. And in the Superdome, once a squalid refuge after Katrina, they boogied in the aisles as confetti covered the field. The Saints (15-3) will meet Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts (16-2) in the Super Bowl in two weeks in Miami. It’s the first time the top seeds in each conference made the big game since the 1993 season. The biggest error was made by Favre. Flushed from the pocket, he seemed to have room to run to set up a field goal. Instead, the 40-year-old quarterback threw cross-field and was intercepted by Tracy Porter at the 22.That finished off Minnesota’s chance for its first Super Bowl trip in 33 years — and opportunity to win it for the first time.New Orleans won the coin toss, Brees guided it to the Minnesota 22 and Hartley, suspended at the start of the season for using a banned stimulant, split the uprights 4:45 into OT.

Colts oust Jets, return to Miami for Super Bowl

VS.

INDIANAPOLIS—This is perfect for the Indianapolis Colts: They have Peyton Manning and they’re back in the Super Bowl. The four-time MVP threw three touchdown passes and the Colts rallied from an 11-point, first-half deficit to beat the New York Jets 30-17 on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game. The Colts (16-2) are now headed back to the NFL title game for the second time in four seasons and their fourth Super Bowl in franchise history.Better yet, they’re heading back to their lucky city — Miami, where they’ve won their past two Super Bowl appearances. The big-talking Jets, and their equally big-talking coach, Rex Ryan, were all the incentive they needed.A month ago, when the New Yorkers were last in town, Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell pulled his starters in the third quarter and gave up a chance at a perfect season to focus on a Super Bowl run. This time, Manning was on the field when it counted.Manning was the MVP when the Colts beat Chicago in the Super Bowl three years ago.Fans counted down the final seconds, streamers and confetti hung in the air, flash bulbs popped incessantly and when the official announcement was made, roars cascaded from the rafters. The Colts’ career rushing leader, Edgerrin James, presented the team with the Lamar Hunt Trophy, which goes to the AFC champs, and some players savored the celebration by staying on the field long after the official celebration ended.Manning finished 26 of 39 for 377 yards. He became the first player in league history with seven 300-yard postseason games. That broke a tie with Kurt Warner and Joe Montana. The Jets’ magical run ended with their first road loss in six games.New York (11-8) built a 17-6 lead and took advantage of trick plays. But the Jets lost running back Shonn Greene with a rib injury in the second half, and rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez was shut out over the final two quarters.Caldwell became only the fifth rookie coach to reach the Super Bowl. Two of the first four — San Francisco’s George Seifert and Don McCafferty, of the Baltimore Colts — have won it.But Caldwell does have Manning, who drove the Colts right through New York’s No. 1-ranked defense with his uncanny precision.Manning kept dropping passes right over the fingertips of defenders, and the Jets couldn’t stop him.Pierre Garcon set career highs with 11 catches for 151 yards. Rookie Austin Collie had a career-best seven catches for 123 yards, his first 100-yard day as a pro. And the Jets allowed three TD passes for the first time all season. After falling behind late in the first half, Manning responded. He took the Colts 80 yards in four plays, hooking up three straight times with Collie, including the 16-yard TD pass that made it 17-13 with 1:13 to go in the half.Manning was just getting started. The next time he got the ball, he took the Colts 57 yards in eight plays, connecting with Garcon in the back corner of the end zone to make it 20-17 with 8:03 left in the third quarter. He sealed it midway through the fourth when Dallas Clark caught a 15-yard TD pass to make it 27-17.But it didn’t look like it would go this way during a scoreless first quarter. The Colts uncharacteristically struggled to get first downs, and settled for field goals in the second quarter instead of scoring touchdowns.New York also changed philosophies, creating its big plays through the air.Sanchez, the fourth rookie quarterback to lead his team to the conference title game and lose, used a beautiful play-action fake to fool rookie cornerback Jacob Lacey. Lacey, who started in placed of the injured Jerraud Powers, was burned for an 80-yard TD pass to Braylon Edwards giving the Jets a 7-3 lead. After the Colts cut it to 7-6, Jets receiver Brad Smith lined up in the Tigercat formation and connected with Jerricho Cotchery for a 45-yard pass to the Colts 12. It was Smith’s first career completion out of an offensive formation. Three plays later, Sanchez barely avoided a sack and found Dustin Keller for a 9-yard TD pass to make it 14-6 with 4:53 to go in the half. The Jets made it 17-6 after Joseph Addai’s fumble set up Jay Feely’s 48-yard field goal. That’s when Manning and the Colts took over — and closed it out.

NOTES—Sanchez was 17 of 30 for 257 yards with two TDs and a late interception….Curtis Martin, the Jets’ career rushing leader, was New York’s honorary captain…..The Colts have won both AFC title games played in Indy by coming back from double-digit deficits. The Colts trailed New England by 18 points three years ago at the RCA Dome…..All four of the Colts’ Super Bowl appearances have been in Miami…..Referee Tony Corrente mistakenly called the Jets the Giants on the coin toss…..Cotchery caught five passes for 102 yards, while Edwards finished with two receptions for 100 yards.

NU holds off Illini with clutch shots.

EVANSTON—A loud sellout crowd saw Northwestern avenge a Dec 30 loss with some clutch shooting as the Wildcats edged Illinois 73-68 It was a game of significant runs. The Cats started the game with 13-2 run,but just when it looked like an NU romp, the Fighting Illini answered with a 20-2 explosion of their own, taking their first lead on a D.J.Richardson jumper. Wildcat guard Juice Thompson got into quick foul trouble, and that’s where the Illini took advantage.and led at the half 39-36. Illinois won in overtime over NU on December 30 in Champaign. Northwestern only shot 40% in the first half while the Illini nailed 14-23 for 61%. The Wildcats were still cold early in the second half and the Illini took their largest lead of eight points with 14:16 left on a layup by Richardson, who later hit a jumper to make it 51-44 with 10;10 to play and neither team scored for the next three minutes. Then,NU started it’s rally when John Shurna dunked off a feed from Luka Mirkovic. Eventually, the Illinois lead was 52-50. At that point,Jeremy Nash nailed a long three point basket to give the Cats a lead they would keep. Thompson and Shurna also contributed three pointers and the Wildcats took a 61-54 lead with 2:20 to play. NU(14-5, 3-4) had to then come up big from the free throw line, and they did.Nash led all scored a game high 22,Shurna added 19 and Drew Crawford add another 15.

NOTES—The sellout was 8117….Richardson led the Illini with 17…..Nash and Shurna each hit on 9 of their 10 freethrows…..As the final seconds ticked away, the ‘Welsh-Ryan Rowdies’ chanted “JUST LIKE FOOTBALL!”
