Heat takes series lead with 96-85 win over Bulls

MIAMI—For the second time in three games, Chris Bosh had a monster night against the Bulls.Unlike the first, this one paid off with a win. And the Miami Heat are two victories from their first trip to the NBA Finals since 2006. Bosh scored 34 points, LeBron James finished with 22 points and 10 assists, and the Heat remained unbeaten at home in the postseason by beating the Bulls 96-85 in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals on Sunday night. Dwyane Wade added 17 points and nine rebounds for Miami, which is now 7-0 at home and handed the team that finished with the NBA’s best record its first losing streak since Feb. 5-7. Udonis Haslem sealed it with a jumper with 1:29 left, putting Miami up 93-84. Bosh scored 30 points in Game 1, a game where Miami was embarrassed 103-82. The Heat haven’t lost since, and only trailed for 3:22 in Game 3. A really good game – it was five points shy of his postseason career best. Carlos Boozer finished with 26 points and 17 rebounds for the Bulls, who had won the first four meetings of the season with Miami. Derrick Rose finished with 20 points, but struggled from the field once again, making only 8 of his 19 shots. Taj Gibson had 11 off the bench.Boozer made a pair of free throws with 6:39 left to get the Bulls within 78-74, the outcome clearly hanging in the balance. Minutes later, that was no longer the case – not after Miami scored nine straight to build more than enough of a cushion. Bosh and Boozer exchanged words and looks more than once on Sunday night, but Bosh ended up with the upper hand. How good was Miami’s defense down that stretch? Bulls center Joakim Noah tried a 5-footer with 4:25 left. He shot it over the backboard. Game 4 is Tuesday night in Miami. Predictably, given the scene and the stakes, there was an abundance of energy from tip-off. James, Wade and Rose all tumbled into courtside photographers while trying to make plays in the first five minutes, and Haslem was greeted by a huge roar when he entered — his first home appearance since Nov. 19 — later in the opening period. Eventually, the emotional swings calmed down, and offense picked up in the second quarter.Bosh was 5 for 5 in the second quarter on his way to a game-high 16 points by halftime. Boozer only missed one of his five shots in the second period, after going 0 for 5 to begin the game.As for the past two NBA MVPs, everything was a battle.Rose finished the first half with no assists, just the 11th time in his career that’s happened. He did have 11 points by intermission, when Miami led 43-40 – meaning it held the Bulls to 69 points in a 48-minute span dating to the midpoint of Game 2. And James, who was the MVP in 2009 and 2010 before Rose took the trophy this season, was only 3 for 8 in the first three quarters. He did have 10 assists by the end of the third, though Miami let what was its biggest lead slip a bit in the final moments of that period.Miami pushed the lead to nine late in the third on a jumper by Haslem, then saw most of that edge disappear quickly. Deng made a 3-pointer to get the Bulls within 68-65, then stole Mike Miller’s inbounds pass with 5.2 seconds left and got a good look at a jumper that rimmed out with a second left. The fourth quarter, that was different. And against the NBA’s top defensive team all season, Miami scored 53 points after halftime.

NOTES—Strange sequence to open the game: Noah knocked the opening tip-off out of bounds, then after the Heat had one inbound pass blown dead by – of all things – referee interference, Noah picked up a foul six seconds into the game on the second inbounds attempt. … Florida Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, slugger Mike Stanton and starters Chris Volstad and Ricky Nolasco were seated courtside. Other celebrity sightings: Julius Peppers and Serena Williams. … Heat C Jamaal Magloire turned 33 on Saturday, and was the fourth Miami player to have a birthday in a nine-day span, joining Mike Bibby (33), Eddie House (33) and Mario Chalmers (25). Bulls reserve and former Heat swingman Rasual Butler turns 32 on Monday.

Michna throws 7 TD passes, Rush beat Dallas to grab first place

Chicago Sky

ROSEMONT—Rush LB Kelvin Morris’ pick six in the fourth quarter helped the Rush defeat the Dallas Vigilantes 69-57, giving them sole possession of first place in the National Conference- Central Division with a record of 7-3. “This was nearly a perfect game,” said Head Coach Bob McMillen. “Our offense and defense played well, and I’m happy with the momentum we have built. It’s going to be great going into our game against Tulsa.” Rush QB Russ Michna dominated the Vigilantes defense, going 20 of 24 and throwing for 7 touchdowns. He had no turnovers and threw to four different Rush receivers as he led the Rush with his superior play. His biggest touchdown throw of the game came in fourth quarter on a desperation pass to WR Charles Dillon after being backed up in his own end zone. He now has a total of 51 touchdown passes on the year. WR Reggie Gray, Michna’s go-to-receiver, finished the game with 6 receptions and three touchdowns for 89 yards. He set the tone for the Chicago offense by scoring in the opening minutes of the first and third quarters. Charles Dillon also helped the WR corps with 2 TD catches for 113 yards. Despite the Rush defense allowing 59 points, they put constant pressure on Vigilantes’ QB Daniel Raudabaugh, forcing him to commit two interceptions in the game. The Rush offense displayed discipline throughout the game, allowing only one turnover and never relinquishing the lead in the second half. Both teams had a strong showing on the offensive side of the ball and the fourth quarter proved to be the most pivotal point in the game. But Morris came up big with his crucial interception with 8:03 seconds and an onside kick recovery, ensuring the win.The Rush look to extend their winning streak to three games as they take on the Tulsa Talons in another divisional showdown. The game is next Sunday, May 29th at 3 p.m. CST.

BoSox knuckle past Cubs 5-1 to take series.

style:MLBPLINTER - INTERLEAGUE LOGO PIN - MLB - MLB - CARBO

BOSTON—Tim Wakefield pitched four hit ball for 6 2-3 innings, and Adrian Gonzalez had four hits of his own to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 5-1 victory on Sunday and send the Cubs home after their first visit to Fenway Park since the 1918 World Series.Boston took two out of three and has now won eight of its last nine to all but erase the damage from an awful April and move one-half game behind the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.Making his third start of the season, this one because of injuries to John Lackey and Daisuke Matsuzaka, Wakefield (1-1) had faced the minimum number of batters when he struck out Jeff Baker with what would have been the third out of the fifth inning. Baker reached safely when the ball got past catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. That was just the third baserunner in the first six innings against Wakefield, who won his 180th game for the Red Sox – third in franchise history behind Cy Young and Roger Clemens. The knuckleballer, who gave up a pair of doubles in the seventh for the Cubs only run, struck out three and walked none before leaving with two out in the seventh.James Russell (1-5) was also filling in, because Matt Garza was scratched with right elbow stiffness. He allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk, striking out two in four-plus innings.Saltalamacchia homered for the third time in the last four games he’s played; he had gone 121 at-bats without a homer before that. Gonzalez went 10 for 15 in the series, which brought the Cubs back to Fenway for the first time since they lost the ’18 Series in six games. The Red Sox went 86 years before winning another title. The Cubs are still waiting for their first World Series championship since 1908.It will be longer. With Cub players popping into the Green Monster’s scoreboard like tourists and its fans outcheering the home crowd at times, the Cubs bumbled their way through four errors in the opener. They won Saturday night and leave town after another loss.Still, with the advent of interleague play, it will be a much shorter wait before they return.Gonzalez singled to lead off the fourth, Kevin Youkilis walked and David Ortiz singled before back-to-back sacrifice flies by Jed Lowrie and Mike Cameron made it 2-0. Saltalamacchia’s leadoff homer made it 3-0 in the fifth. After Starlin Castro and Baker doubled to make it 3-1 and chase Wakefield in the seventh, Boston scored two more in the bottom half on Youkilis’ triple.

NOTES—Ortiz’s 300th home run on Saturday night was caught by CNN anchor John King in the Monster Seats and exchanged for a signed bat. … Russell had been 0-4 with a 10.05 ERA in his previous four starts this season. … It was military appreciation night for the Red Sox. Members of the armed services ringed the infield for the national anthem, and Marine Reservist Sergeant Terrence S. Burke, who has a prosthetic leg, ran around the bases before the game and was greeted at home plate by players. … The Cubs put Marlon Byrd on the 15-day DL with multiple fractures in his face on Sunday, a day after he was beaned by Alfredo Aceves. Byrd was released from the hospital and expected to travel back to Chicago with the team….Kerry Wood was warned after hitting Lowrie in the eighth. … Baker left the game with a groin strain and will be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

Sox take rubber match from Dodgers as Alexi gets 4 hits.

Alexei Ramirez homered and drove in a career-high five runs, and the suddenly surging White Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3 Sunday on an 80-degree day in Chicago.”It feels just like it’s in Cuba. So it’s just like down there, you just come out and play,” Ramirez said through a translator. Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the first inning, then added an RBI double in the third, a run-scoring single in the fourth and another RBI double in the eighth. His second double was headed for the fence but was cut off by right fielder Tony Gwynn Jr., keeping Ramirez from the triple he needed for his first career cycle. Ramirez’s day was just part of the good news for the White Sox, who have won 11 of 15. After taking two of three games against the Dodgers, the Sox are 5-0-1 in their last six series. The White Sox embark on a three-city road trip beginning Monday in Texas. Edwin Jackson (4-5) improved to 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA at home this season. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run and five hits while walking two and striking out seven.Ramirez also matched a career best with four hits, the sixth time he’s reached that mark. He’s driven in five runs three times, most recently against Florida on May 21 last season. Juan Pierre added three hits for the Sox who had at least 10 for the fourth straight game.Matt Thornton pitched two innings for his second save. The beleaguered Dodgers, who have lost seven of nine, got four hits from rookie Jerry Sands. But All-Star outfielder Andre Ethier left moments after crashing into the fence while chasing Pierre’s fourth-inning double. The Dodgers announced that Ethier had a bruised left elbow, a bruised lower back and a sprained left big toe. Making matters worse, catcher Rod Barajas was replaced by pinch-hitter Dioner Navarro in the fifth. Barajas sprained his right wrist. X-rays on both injured players were negative.Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda entered on a roll, with 14 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings over his last two starts. But the White Sox jumped on him early, scoring three runs in the first.Kuroda (5-4) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and six runs — four earned. On the bright side, the Dodgers activated Rafael Furcal from the 15-day disabled list after he missed 37 games because of a broken left thumb. Furcal started at shortstop and led off, but went 0 for 5 with three strikeouts and a throwing error that led to two unearned runs. James Loney committed a baserunning mistake in the second, getting doubled off first base on a pop fly to short right field. The Dodgers scored twice in the seventh, loading the bases with none out against reliever Chris Sale. Jesse Crain came on and walked in a run and allowed a run-scoring fielder’s choice, but escaped the inning with a three-run lead intact.Thornton threw the last two innings, earning his second save since being removed from the closer role. He blew four straight save chances earlier this season.

NOTES—White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin was held out of the lineup for the second straight day because of a bruised left knee, though he was available for pinch-hitting duty. Ozzie Guillen said he expects Quentin to be available when the Dodgers begin their road trip Monday at Texas….To make room for Furcal on the 25-man roster, the Dodgers placed infielder Juan Uribe on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left hip flexor, retroactive to Friday….. Adam Dunn, who entered in a 2-for-26 slump that dropped his average to .190, drew three walks and hit an RBI single in the eighth. Dunn walked against lefty reliever Scott Elbert in the sixth. Dunn is 0 for 30 against left-handers this season.

Red Sox play like Cubs(bad)in eighth as Northsiders rally for 9-3 win

style:MLBPLINTER - INTERLEAGUE LOGO PIN - MLB - MLB - CARBO

BOSTON—Patience paid off for Reed Johnson and the Cubs. For the Boston Red Sox, an eighth inning of poor pitching and fielding helped end their seven-game winning streak.Johnson has started just seven games this season. And the Cubs trailed 3-1 after seven innings before beginning their comeback to a 9-3 victory on Saturday night. He had a go-ahead double in an eight-run eighth on Saturday night and the Cubs gained a split of their first two games at Fenway Park since the 1918 World Series with both teams wearing replica uniforms from that year.Johnson didn’t even start on Saturday. But when Marlon Byrd was beaned by Alfred Aceves in the second — and walked off under his own power — Johnson ran for him and stayed in the game in center field.Mike Quade thought Byrd would stay overnight in a hospital.

“You’re nervous,” said Johnson, who is batting .392 but has only 51 at bats in 31 games. “You never want to see something like that.”

The Cubs’ last visit to the 99-year-old stadium before Friday night’s 15-5 loss was in the World Series 93 years ago. The Cubs won the fifth game then, but Boston took the championship by winning Game 6.The Red Sox had victory in sight again on Saturday, leading 3-1. But Matt Albers failed to retire any of the six batters he faced in the eighth and his teammates committed three errors in the inning. They spent about four hours in first place in the AL East when Tampa Bay lost to Florida 5-3. Their first stay at the top this season marked a stunning turnaround for a team that began the season at 2-10.Then came the wild turn of events in the eighth. Before then, Aramis Ramirez had given the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the third with an RBI double. Boston went ahead on David Ortiz’s two-run homer, his ninth of the year, after Kevin Youkilis led off the fourth with a single.

“Tough lineup. They have a pretty good idea of what they’re trying to do at the plate,” Chicago starter Carlos Zambrano said. “Just one mistake — to Big Papi.”

Jacoby Ellsbury’s run-scoring single made it 3-1 in the sixth against Zambrano before Sean Marshall (2-0) came in to end the inning. Then Albers (0-2) relieved in the eighth and Boston’s chances of winning faded fast.Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro singled and Ramirez walked, loading the bases. Carlos Pena then walked in a run before Johnson doubled to left, putting the Cubs ahead to stay. Alfonso Soriano followed with a popup to short left field where shortstop Jed Lowrie let it bounce off his glove for an error as Pena scored.Franklin Morales, obtained Thursday from Colorado, relieved Albers and his first pitch went for an RBI double by pinch-hitter Jeff Baker. Koyie Hill struck out and Barney flew to right, where J.D. Drew’s catch was only the beginning of a bizarre play.He threw home and Soriano, who had tagged up, headed back to third. Catcher Jason Varitek’s throw ticked off third baseman Kevin Youkilis’ glove. Youkilis was charged with an error and left fielder Carl Crawford, who backed him up, threw wildly to home for another error as Soriano and Baker scored. Castro followed with an RBI double, making it 9-3.The Red Sox throwback uniforms were an off-white color with no team name on the front — a good idea, perhaps, considering they wouldn’t want to be associated with the way they played in the eighth. The Cubs wore grey uniforms with blue pinstripes and the word “Cubs” on the left breast.

NOTES—Carlos Marmol pitched a scoreless ninth, extending his streak to 23 2/3 inning without a run…..Matt Garza was scratched from his scheduled start in the series finale Sunday with stiffness in his pitching elbow. Quade indicated that lefty reliever James Russell was the leading candidate to start against Tim Wakefield…..Youkilis was hit by a pitch for the 72nd time, breaking a tie with Mo Vaughn for the Red Sox record……Ortiz’s home run made him the fifth player to hit at least 300 with the Red Sox. The others are Ted Williams (521), Carl Yastrzemski (452), Jim Rice (382) and Dwight Evans (379)…..Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks is expected to throw his first bullpen session on Monday since going on the disabled list May 5 with a strained right biceps.

Buehrle beats Garland as Sox hammer Dodgers

style:MLBPLINTER - INTERLEAGUE LOGO PIN - MLB - MLB - CARBO

Mark Buehrle threw seven strong innings to become the career victories leader in interleague games, Paul Konerko drove in three runs and they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-2 on Saturday. Buehrle (4-3) allowed seven hits and two runs to win for the third time in four starts, giving him his 24th interleague victory — breaking his tie with Jamie Moyer atop the career list. He struck out one, and didn’t walk anyone for the second time in three starts. Buehrle is 10-0 with a 1.79 ERA in his last 13 interleague starts.Alex Rios and Brent Lillibridge homered in a 16-hit attack, the fifth time this season the White Sox have had at least that many. They broke it open with a six-run fourth against former teammate Jon Garland (1-4) as Rios hit a two-run homer, and Alexei Ramirez and Konerko later added two-run singles.Konerko’s hit chased Garland, who allowed 11 hits and seven runs in 3 2/3 innings. It was the most runs Garland allowed in a start since May 29, 2009, and the most hits he’s allowed since July 6, 2007.Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski each had three hits for the White Sox. Lillibridge, a late addition to the lineup after right fielder Carlos Quentin was scratched with a bruised left knee, had two hits, including a two-run homer in the seventh. The White Sox have won 10 out of their last 14 after falling a season-worst 11 games below .500 on May 6. The Dodgers have lost six of eight. The Dodgers tied it at 1 in the third, getting infield single from Jamey Carroll and a bunt single from Juan Castro, the latter a result of White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham’s failure to cover first. Carroll scored on Matt Kemp’s groundout. Jerry Sands hit his first big league homer, a line shot to left field off Buehrle in the sixth for the Dodgers.Garland, a member of the rotation for the Sox World Series-winning team in 2005, was appearing at U.S. Cellular Field for the first time as a visiting player. Garland, who played for the White Sox from 2000-07, last pitched in a game at his former home park on Sept. 26, 2007. Garland and Buehrle broke in as rookies together for the White Sox in 2000.It wasn’t a “normal game” for Garland, who fell to 0-3 with a 5.02 ERA over his last five starts.Slumping White Sox slugger Adam Dunn struck out four times, the fifth time this season he has fanned at least three times in a game. Dunn, who drew a walk during the fourth-inning rally, saw his batting average fall to .190 on the season.

NOTES—Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he thinks SS Rafael Furcal, out with a broken left thumb, is “close.” Furcal may rejoin the team this weekend in Chicago and the club hopes to activate him in time for Monday’s series opener at Houston. Furcal has appeared in just seven games this season. He’s been playing on a rehab assignment for Triple-A Albuquerque. … Juan Uribe, who has been filling in for Furcal, strained his left hip flexor in Friday’s win. He left the Dodgers’ clubhouse before Saturday’s game to get an MRI on the injured area. Mattingly said it’s possible Uribe may be placed on the disabled list. … Aaron Miles (sore rib cage) was limited but available for Saturday game, though Mattingly he’d like to rest him for another day. … Mattingly is hopeful Casey Blake (left elbow infection) will be able to begin a rehab assignment at Albuquerque by Monday and, if all goes well, he could be activated when the Dodgers being their next homestand on May 27.

Dodgers rally late against Santos, beat Sox in ten

style:MLBPLINTER - INTERLEAGUE LOGO PIN - MLB - MLB - CARBO

The matchup didn’t seem favorable for the Los Angeles Dodgers. No. 9 hitter Russell Mitchell batting with two outs in the ninth against White Sox closer Sergio Santos, who hadn’t given up a run or blown a save all season. Advantage Mitchell, who entered the game batting .091 and was 0 for 3 before coming to the plate in the ninth. Mitchell lifted a homer down the left field line to tie the game — his first homer of the season — and the Dodgers went on to score three runs in the 10th inning for a 6-4 victory over the White Sox on Friday. Mitchell and Santos had played together in the Arizona Fall League. Santos, a former infielder who was converted to a pitcher in the minors two years ago, had not allowed a run in 20 innings this season and had converted six straight saves. Even thought he wasn’t officially named the White Sox’s closer after Matt Thornton’s early season struggles, it’s apparent he’s taken over the role. Santos gave up four runs in 1 1/3 innings. Jamey Carroll started the 10th with a single off Santos (2-1) for his fourth hit, and Matt Kemp singled one out later.Juan Castro, a seventh-inning replacement after second baseman Juan Uribe left with a hip flexor injury, then dumped an RBI single over first base. James Loney followed with an RBI double, and Jay Gibbons greeted Will Ohman with a run-scoring single. The Dodgers were coming off two tough losses to the Giants and had dropped five of six coming in. Kenley Jansen (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. The White Sox had runners on second and third with one out against Matt Guerrier in the 10th. Adam Dunn hit an RBI grounder off Scott Elbert before Mike MacDougal got Paul Konerko on a grounder for his first save. Phil Humber pitched seven solid innings, allowing a two-run homer to Kemp in the first, and left with a 3-2 lead. Gordon Beckham, in a 2-for-22 slump, hit a two-run homer as the Sox scored three times in the second off Ted Lilly. Lilly, who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the White Sox last June while pitching for the Cubs at Wrigley Field, allowed seven hits and three runs in seven innings. The teams met in the 1959 World Series — won by the Dodgers in six games — and they are hardly strangers these days because they share a spring training complex in Glendale, Ariz. The announced attendance on a second straight foggy night at U.S. Cellular Field was 24,121. Beckham’s fourth homer came right after consecutive two-out doubles by Alex Rios and Ramon Castro. The White Sox had five consecutive hits, and six straight batters reached before Lilly struck out Alexei Ramirez to end the inning.Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier, who earlier this season had a 30-game hitting streak, singled in the third to snap an 0-for-22 slump. He was 1 for 4.

NOTES—Mattingly said Uribe was to be re-evaluated in the morning and it’s unlikely he’ll play Saturday. … Dodgers RHP Jon Garland will pitch at U.S. Cellular Field on Saturday for the first time since 2007, his final season with the White Sox. He’ll be opposing his friend and former teammate Mark Buehrle. The two still text occasionally. Garland was 92-81 in eight seasons with the Sox and an 18-game winner in 2005 and 2006. He pitched a complete game against the Angels in the 2005 ALCS to help the White Sox make the World Series where they swept Houston. In the Game 4 clincher, Uribe made two stellar defensive plays from shortstop, falling into the stands to catch a pop and then fielding a slow grounder and making a quick throw to get the final out. Both Garland and Uribe were honored in a scoreboard tribute before Friday’s game. They watched from the dugout and then tipped their caps to the crowd. Uribe, playing second, made a nice diving catch of Rios’ pop to end the third.

Cubs embarressed by BoSox in first visit to Fenway since 1918

style:MLBPLINTER - INTERLEAGUE LOGO PIN - MLB - MLB - CARBO

BOSTON—The Boston Red Sox are on the verge of finally pulling themselves out of the hole they dug with that 2-10 start.Adrian Gonzalez had four of Boston’s 19 hits, adding four RBI on Friday night as the Red Sox welcomed the Cubs back to Fenway Park for the first time since 1918 by beating them 15-5. It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Red Sox, moving them past the Yankees and within a half-game of the AL East-leading Rays. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had two hits, including a homer. Jon Lester (6-1) won his sixth straight decision despite giving up a career-high 12 hits. He allowed five runs, two walks and a hit batter, striking out five. Scott Atchison earned his first career save with three innings of scoreless relief. Kevin Youkilis had two doubles and a two-run homer, and Jacoby Ellsbury also had three hits for Boston, which improved to 22-10 since losing 10 of its first 12 games. Returning to Boston to play the Red Sox for the first time since the 1918 World Series, the Cubs committed four errors and gave up 19 hits. If Cubs pitchers had forgotten in all that time how close the Green Monster is to home plate, they know now after Boston had six doubles and hit two home runs over Fenway’s famous left-field wall. “All those flyballs,” said Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who misplayed a line drive into an error. “A routine flyball can go off the wall. We’re professionals. We need to make adjustments and play the wall.” Jeff Baker had four hits and Aramis Ramirez three for the Cubs who were coming off a two-game sweep of Florida. Doug Davis (0-2) gave up seven runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out three in 3 2/3 innings. Boston won the 1918 World Series, a milestone that for decades reminded Red Sox fans of the franchise’s failure but now stands as a landmark only for the Cubs as they seeks their first championship since 1908. “[This] put an end to my enthusiasm for this momentous occasion,” Cubs manager Mike Quade said. “They’re tough. I feel really good about us offensively and we’re doing a good job against left-handed starters. But, four errors isn’t going to get it done.” Cubs fans made their presence known in the sellout crowd of 37,140, outcheering the locals at times. There was even an appearance of the Blues Brothers in the stands. But Cub players did not adapt well to their new surroundings, committing four errors plus a dropped flyball by right fielder Reed Johnson that was changed to a double. The Red Sox scored two in the first, one of them on a throwing error by catcher Koyie Hill when he tried to catch Ellsbury stealing third. The Cubs tied it at 2 in the third, but Boston scored two more in the bottom half and then made it 8-2 with four more runs in the fourth. After Gonzalez’s two-run single chased Davis, Scott Maine came in and gave up a two-run homer to Youkilis. The Cubs cut it to 8-5 in the fifth, scoring two on a double by Johnson. Saltalamacchia led off the bottom half with a homer and Boston added another run to make it 10-5, then scored two more in the eighth. The Red Sox took the 1918 Series in six games, with just 15,238 fans settling into Fenway to watch the clincher. (The Chicago History Museum recently published a document indicating that Cubs players might have been paid to throw the Series.) Babe Ruth, who won two games in the series, entered the final game as a defensive replacement in left field. Just two months later, World War I ended. With two titles in this century, the Red Sox have left their futility behind. But the Cubs are still looking for their first championship in more than a century.

NOTES—The Red Sox activated RHP Dan Wheeler from the 15-day disabled list and selected INF Drew Sutton from their Triple-A roster. To make room for them in Boston, the ballclub optioned RHP Michael Bowden and SS Jose Iglesias to Pawtucket. To make room for Sutton on the 40-man roster, the club designated OF Daniel Nava for assignment. The Red Sox also added LHP Franklin Morales to the active roster….Dennis Eckersley threw out the first pitch to Carlton Fisk. Bill Buckner was also in the ballpark, to provide analysis for the Chicago TV broadcast…..Youkilis’ two-run homer gave him 500 career RBI…..Alfonso Soriano turned Saltalamacchia’s seventh-inning single into two bases when he charged it and ran right past it.

Sox beat up short handed Tribe 8-2

Gavin Floyd pitched seven solid innings and Carlos Quentin homered as the White Sox rocked Fausto Carmona for the second time this season and beat the first-place Cleveland Indians 8-2 on Thursday night.Floyd (5-3) followed up Jake Peavy’s three-hit shutout on Wednesday night by allowing a run and five hits as the White Sox swept the two-game set with the short-handed Indians. With Grady Sizemore on the disabled list, Cleveland was also missing DH Travis Hafner for a second straight game with a sore right side and he could be headed to an MRI on Friday. Travis Buck, who was supposed to be the DH, was scratched Thursday with turf toe and replaced by Shelley Duncan.Carmona (3-4), who was 6-0 against the White Sox from 2008-10, gave up eight runs and seven hits on a foggy night at U.S. Cellular Field. On opening day in Cleveland, he surrendered 11 hits and 10 runs in three innings of a 15-10 loss.Quentin hit a two-run homer, his ninth of the season, in the fifth to make it 8-1.Alexei Ramirez had a bases-loaded double and Adam Dunn a two-run single in the second. Paul Konerko doubled in two runs in the first. The Sox victory was their ninth in 12 games. Cleveland’s Matt LaPorta hit his fifth homer of the season, a solo shot in the ninth off Tony Pena.In a four-run second, Alex Rios and Dallas McPherson singled and when Omar Vizquel bunted, catcher Carlos Santana’s throw to third was late, loading the bases. After a fielder’s choice, Ramirez sent a hard shot past third to make it 4-1 before Dunn delivered the two-run single. Konerko hit a two-run double in the first after Juan Pierre led off with a double and Ramirez was hit with a pitch after he squared to bunt. The Indians scored in the first when Asdrubal Cabrera was hit with a pitch, Shin-Soo Choo doubled and Santana hit a sacrifice fly.

NOTES—Ozzie Guillen said the club plans to recognize Dodgers pitcher Jon Garland and infielder Juan Uribe when they come to town Friday to begin an interleague series. Both were key members of the team’s 2005 World Series championship. … Indians IF Orlando Cabrera was not with the team as he went to South Carolina to become a U.S. citizen. Cleveland recalled IF Luis Valbuena from Triple-A Columbus and designated RHP Justin Germano for assignment. … Cabrera started a highlight-reel double play in the eighth, grabbing Vizquel’s grounder with his bare hand and flipping behind his back to second baseman Adam Everett.
