MINNEAPOLIS—Minnesota’s defense delivered an overpowering performance. Mitch Leidner provided the finishing touch.Leidner threw his first touchdown pass in seven weeks and Blake Cashman and Steven Richardson each had two of Minnesota’s season-high seven sacks , leading the Gophers to a 29-12 victory over Northwestern on Saturday.Playing at home for the final time, Leidner found Drew Wolitarsky from 9 yards out with 6:46 left to give the Gophers (8-3, 5-3) a 22-6 lead and then ran in a 12-yard score with 2:31 remaining. The fifth-year senior, who was intercepted once, ended a five-game streak without a touchdown pass.

”It’s been long overdue,” Wolitarsky said, smiling.

Emmit Carpenter made three field goals and Shannon Brooks totaled 110 yards from scrimmage for the Gophers, whose offense sputtered through most of the afternoon after an 80-yard game-opening march into the end zone and before the late Leidner-led push.

”Hey, find a way to win this thing,” coach Tracy Claeys said. ”Who cares how anybody has played?”

Clayton Thorson threw for 276 yards and a late score, but the Wildcats (5-6, 4-4) were denied on fourth-and-1 at the Minnesota 16 in the second quarter and fourth-and-1 at the Gophers 13 in the third quarter. They lost two fumbles and failed on both 2-point conversion tries.

”We’ve just got to learn how to finish,” wide receiver Andrew Scanlan said.

Austin Carr, the Big Ten’s leading receiver, had five catches for 68 yards for the Wildcats before leaving the field a bit woozy from a helmet-to-helmet hit by Minnesota safety Duke McGhee. The targeting penalty, the seventh time this season a Gophers player has received the automatic ejection including two for McGhee, helped set up Northwestern’s first score.

”He knows better than that,” Claeys said.

Fitzgerald declined to discuss Carr’s condition, beyond ”he seemed to be doing well” after the game. The 4-yard touchdown run by Justin Jackson with 2:17 left in the third quarter finished the drive and cut the lead to 15-6, but the Gophers weren’t deterred.

”Emotions were pretty high at that point, but we’re a level-headed team and we didn’t let that affect us,” said linebacker Jack Lynn, who had 1 1/2 of Minnesota’s 12 tackles for loss.

Richardson recalled a recruiting visit that Fitzgerald once made to his high school, Chicago’s Mount Carmel, that left him feeling snubbed. Richardson, listed at 6 feet and 300 pounds, said Fitzgerald was immediately turned off by his lack of height.

”I saw that guy come into my high school coach’s office and just look me up and down and just look at me like I’m way too short to play the game,” Richardson said. ”It was really nice to play one of these types of game in front of him, just because he doubted you.”

With a kickoff temperature of 30 degrees, including an 18-degree wind chill factor, the Gophers played in front of their smallest crowd (38,162) in eight seasons at TCF Bank Stadium. Less than half of those fans were still in the seats by the fourth quarter. Minnesota’s average attendance this year was 43,814, the lowest since 2002 when the team played at the Metrodome.

With the Thorson-to-Carr connection quiet even before the star pass-catcher departed the game, the Wildcats were uncharacteristically unproductive on offense until they entered catch-up mode late and padded their statistics.NU Hosts Illinois on Saturday, the Wildcats need a win for bowl eligibility. They’ve beaten the Illini in three of the last four meetings.

SOUTH BEND—Virginia Tech proved it can overcome a slow start and turnovers.The Hokies fell behind by 17 points early and trailed by 10 to start the fourth quarter, but Jerod Evans guided them to a touchdown and a pair of field goals by Joey Slye in the quarter to beat Notre Dame 34-31 Saturday.Evans threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another in intermittent snow and 20 mph winds. The Hokies (8-3) had been 0-3 when trailing at halftime this season and minus-9 in turnovers in its three losses. Evans threw an interception on a pass that bounced off the hands of Cam Phillips and fumbled when he was sacked, leading to 10 points by the Irish on the two turnovers.Evans said the Hokies knew the game wasn’t over after falling behind 17-0.

”We know we’re more than capable of doing of what we do with the high-powered offense, so you don’t lose confidence easily when you’ve got that type of talent,” he said.

The Virginia Tech defense shut down the Irish offense in the second half. After giving up 299 yards in total offense, the Hokies held the Irish to 150 yards in the second half – with 67 yards of that came on a touchdown run by Josh Adams that extended Notre Dame’s lead to 31-21 and 57 coming on the final drive of the game.

”They hit us on a couple of plays early that they had not shown, but our kids hung in there,” Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster said. ”It was a tale of two halves. They did some unique things and we adjusted.”

DeShone Kizer, who was 13-of-18 passing for 199 yards with two touchdowns in the first half, was just 3 of 15 for 36 yards in the second half.

”We had some balls that were catchable that we didn’t catch. I just don’t think we executed quite as well offensively,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said.

A solid performance after a slow start should give the Hokies confidence as they try to clinch the ACC Coastal Division.

NOTES—It was the same old story for the Irish, who squandered a double-digit lead in a loss for the third time this season. The loss clinched a losing season for the Irish, just the 14th time in 128 seasons of playing football and the first since going 3-9 in 2007…..The win against the Irish could get the Hokies back in the poll…..The loss drops Kelly’s record to 59-30 in seven seasons at Notre Dame, tying him with Lou Holtz for most losses at the school. Holtz was 100-30-2 in 11 seasons. Kelly will finish with only his second losing season in 26 seasons as coach. Central Michigan finished 4-7 in his first year as head coach there in 2004…..The Hokies finish the regular season with their annual game against rival Virginia. The Hokies have beaten the Cavaliers 12 straight times…..The Irish finish the season against rival USC. In their last trip to face the Trojans in 2014, the Irish were blown out 49-14. The Irish have won three of the last four in the series.

CHAMPAIGN—On a 37-degree day when a stiff wind made it feel much colder, Iowa used LeShun Daniels Jr.’s 159 yards and two touchdowns and a punt-return score by Riley McCarron to shut down Illinois, 28-0.And the Hawkeyes (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) played some defense, too. The Illini (3-8, 2-6) had 198 total yards and never moved the ball inside the Iowa 30.On a day when yards were hard to come by, Iowa turned its own turnover into the game’s first points.Akrum Wadley fumbled the ball at the Illinois 2, but the stagnant Illinois offense couldn’t move the ball past its own 5.That left senior McCarron standing at his own 45, waiting for the low, wind-driven punt from David Reisner to find him. When it did, he gashed through the Illini, breaking right and finding little but open space on his way to the end zone. The 55-yard touchdown was enough to give Iowa a 7-0 halftime lead.McCarron had only returned one punt this season before Saturday.From there, with the wind blowing 24 mph, the Hawkeye offense leaned on Daniels.He scored on a 1-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to put the Hawkeyes up 14-0 and on a 50-yard breakaway midway through the fourth for a 21-0 lead that was far more than the Illini could overcome.

NOTES—Coming off a big win over Michigan, the Hawkeyes struggled through the first half. McCarron’s touchdown looked for a while like it might be the game’s only points. But Iowa’s defense kept its foot on the Illini for four quarters, denying them points even off a pair of first-half turnovers and keeping Illinois quarterback Wes Lunt to 137 yards and an interception on 19-of-41 passing….The Illini had first-half chances. But they failed to turn two turnovers or good field position into points in their last home game of the season. Lost in the final score is a solid defensive effort from a defense that Iowa just wore down as the game went on. Iowa had 136 yards at halftime, had turned the ball over twice and, minus McCarron’s punt return, hadn’t scored…..llinois finishes up at Northwestern next Saturday.

CALGARY—Marian Hossa has been in the NHL long enough to knows how to make a goal out of seemingly nothing.Hossa’s team-leading 10th goal of the season with 2:23 left in the third period lifted the Blackhawks to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night.Chad Johnson threw up his glove to stop a hard shot from Artemi Panarin but the puck went off the top of his glove and high in the air. It ended up landing behind him where Hossa got his stick on it for his 80th game-winning goal.

”I don’t think the goalie knew exactly where the puck was and the defender tried to put his stick out,” Hossa said. ”I tried to hook on his stick so he doesn’t touch the puck and the puck just bounced pretty much close to the goal line and I just tried to put it underneath me in the net.”

As the puck trickled over the line, Hossa was in the crease and in the process of falling on the Flames goaltender.Calgary coach Glen Gulutzan said he would have challenged for goaltender interference but he did not have a timeout left, having used it earlier in the period.

Hossa, who has five goals in his last six games, is tied for fourth in the NHL in goals behind Patrik Laine (12), Sidney Crosby (11) and Michael Grabner (11).

”I just try to put the puck at the net right now,” Hossa said. ”When you feel like the puck’s going in for you, you just try to be around the net or shoot pucks to the net and try to make plays.”

It’s nothing Joel Quenneville hasn’t seen before.

”He’s scored some goals from right around that net here to get us a point or two and tonight’s a good illustration of how important he’s been for us,” he said.

Ryan Hartman and Brent Seabrook also scored for the Hawks, who have points in 12 of their last 13 (10-1-2) games. Corey Crawford stopped 28 shots.Sam Bennett and Sean Monahan scored for Calgary, and Johnson had 21 savesDown 1-0 after the first period, Calgary took the lead early in the second with two goals 3:30 apart from its new-look top line. SALT LAKE CITY—Jimmy Butler scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Bulls defeated the Utah Jazz 85-77 on Thursday night.The Bulls have won four straight, including three on the road.The Bulls used 9-0 runs to start the third and fourth quarters that Utah never recovered from. Nikola Mirotic had a dunk, a steal and an assist during the fourth-quarter run that put the Bulls up 75-58.The Jazz cut the lead to 80-75 late, but Dwyane Wade and Butler hit jumpers to put the game away.Wade scored 18 points for the Bulls and Robin Lopez posted his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.The Jazz have lost two straight at home after going 4-1 during the preceding road trip.Rudy Gobert finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for the Jazz as Gordon Hayward added eight points and 12 rebounds.The Jazz led 43-41 at halftime despite the Bulls shooting just 28.8 percent from the field. Former Blazers center Robin Lopez added 13 points and 11 rebounds.The Blazers, who had won five of six, were cold from the start, falling behind by as many as 26 points. Damian Lillard, who made just two shots from the field in the first half, finished with 19 points.The Bulls, coming off a 106-95 victory over Washington on Saturday, was without Rajon Rondo because of a left ankle sprain. Jerian Grant made his first start of the season and had 18 points.Rondo, who joined the Bulls as a free agent in the offseason, is averaging 7.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.5 assists.The Blazers played their third straight game without starting forward Al-Farouq Aminu, who has a sore left calf and is expected to be re-evaluated next week. WINNIPEG—Connor Hellebuyck finally made the statement he was looking for all season.Hellebuyck made 27 saves for his first shutout of the season, rookie Patrik Laine scored his NHL-leading 12th goal and the Winnipeg Jets beat the division-leading Blackhawks 4-0 on Tuesday night.

”I’ve been chasing it for a while and now I got the monkey off my back,” Hellebuyck said.

The second year player got his third NHL shutout in a pivotal win for the second-place Jets.

”The statement,” he said, ”was that we’ve figured it out and now we know how to play and now we know we can play it.”

Rookie defenseman Josh Morrissey scored his first career goal, while forwards Chris Thorburn and Nic Petan got their first scores of the season for the second-place Jets.Nikolaj Ehlers had two assists, helping Winnipeg stretch its points streak to five games.Corey Crawford was replaced by Scott Darling after letting in four goals on 22 shots. Darling made two saves.It was the first of five games between the Central Division foes this season.The Blackhawks had points in each of their previous 11 games. It was their first game in a season-high seven-game road trip.Morrissey beat Crawford at 6:26 of the first period when his one-timer from the high slot went through the goalie’s legs.

”You dream of that one in the driveway, basement and the outdoor rink,” Morrissey said. ”To finally be able to get that and see it go in was something special.”

It was only the 11th even-strength goal Crawford had allowed this season.Morrissey finished the period in the penalty box after he was called for charging against Hawks wing Vinnie Hinostroza with 26 seconds left, but the Hawks couldn’t take advantage of the extra man.The Hawks got two more power plays early in the middle period, including a two-man advantage for 1:07.Winnipeg handled the puck often in the short-handed situation and got a standing ovation from the crowd at MTS Centre after the second penalty expired.The Jets had their first power play midway through the scoreless second, but couldn’t add to their 1-0 lead.The Hawks outshot Winnipeg 20-13 after two periods.Thorburn scored at 4:41 of the third period with a surprise shot. The veteran got the puck along the boards, spun around and shot at the net. The puck went high past Crawford for the 2-0 lead.Laine scored after Dustin Byfuglien’s wraparound attempt went off a stick and Laine got the puck and flipped it by Crawford at 8:32.Eleven seconds later, Petan scored his first of the season when he missed shooting a loose puck but his second attempt beat Crawford.

”It was a tough few minutes, just (the puck) kind of going in off everything, finding its way through,” Crawford said. ”I mean, that happens in games.We’ve put together a good string of games, solid hockey. We played good tonight. They didn’t really have much. Like I said, it was a tough few minutes, but we can forget about that one for sure.”

Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice, whose squad is now 6-0 when leading after two periods, said it was their best game this season.

”They’re a good team,” Maurice said of the Blackhawks. ”They changed gears on us a bit at the end of the second and we found a way to come back.”

NOTES—The Hawks had scored at least two goals in each of its previous games this season…..Duncan Keith played in his 850th career NHL game…..The Bears are at Calgary on Friday night in the second game of a seven-game trip through Canada and California.

CHAMPAIGN—Jalen Coleman-Lands and Maverick Morgan scored 18 points apiece to lead six players in double figures and Illinois beat Division II McKendree 112-65 on Tuesday night.The game was a strong response from Coleman-Lands, who struggled in the first two games of the season.

”It feels good (to get my shot going), especially with the last two games,” Coleman-Lands said. ”My teammates just do a good job of trusting me. It’s just about repetition and getting ready for the next game.”

Michael Finke had 17 points, on 8-of-10 shooting, and eight rebounds and Tracy Abrams was 5-of-5 from the field with four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and six assists. Aaron Jordan scored 11, including three 3s, and Mike Thorne Jr. had 10 points and 10 rebounds.Illinois (3-0) opened the game with a 7-0 run, including five points by Finke, and never trailed.Coleman-Lands hit 3-pointers on three-consecutive possessions to make it 21-10 with 12:28 left in the first half and the Illini led by double figures the rest of the way.The Illinois bench outscored McKendree’s reserves 59-23 and shot 56 percent from the field, including 16 of 28 (57 percent) from 3-point range.Illinois head coach John Groce was proud of his team’s performance given his team’s sloppy play in the first two games.

”They responded today,” Groce said. ”We have a long way to go, but they played hard today for a lot longer and I liked the attitudes and vibes on our team. That was a good step in the right direction.”

Nate Michael, son of former Illinois basketball player Tom Michael, led the McKendree (1-0) with 25 points. The game served as an exhibition for Bearcats.Tuesday was a moment that Michael said he’ll never forget.

”It was a dream come true,” Michael said. ”Growing up just down the road here, having season tickets when my dad worked here . I just wish we played a little bit better here. We definitely enjoyed ourselves, and this will help us in the future.”

The Illini played the way they should against a Division-II team. Illinois will play two more relatively easy games before facing No. 19 West Virginia in the NIT Season Tip-Off on Nov. 24.The Bearcats had a good idea of how the game was going to go before the ball was even tipped. They’ll return to regular competition Saturday.After scoring a career-high 40 points against Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Malcolm Hill was limited to three points.Te’Jon Lucas got some early playing time after starter Tracy Abrams got into foul trouble. The freshman guard took advantage of the opportunity, finishing with nine points and six assists.Coleman-Lands took a break from draining shots in the second half when he assisted Maverick Morgan on a behind-the-head pass.Illinois hosts Detroit on Friday night as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off tournament.

LAKE FOREST—The Bears’ 2016 season just went from bad to worse.The NFL announced on Monday that wide receiver Alshon Jeffery has been suspended for four games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. The suspension will cost Jeffery a reported total of $3.4 million in lost salary.Jeffery released a statement following the announcement of his suspension.

“As a professional athlete, I have been careful about what I put in my boy. I took a recommended supplement to combat inflammation. Unfortunately this supplement contained an ingredient that was on the NFL’s banned substance list. I take full responsibility and I’m deeply upset with myself for not doing the proper research. I want to apologize to my family, the Bears organization, my teammates, and Bears fans. I will work hard to earn back the respect and trust of the Bears nation and look forward to being back on the field. ”

The suspension means that the 2-7 Bears won’t have their leading receiver for the next four weeks when they play the Giants, Titans, 49ers and Lions. Jeffery isn’t allowed to return to practice until Dec. 12 and won’t be eligible to play in a game until Dec. 18, when the Bears host the Packers.With Jeffery out, there’s a good chance that a bad Bears’ offense is only going to get worse over the next four weeks. Jeffery leads the Bears with 630 receiving yards this year, which is 205 more than any other player on the team. The receiver also has 40 catches and one touchdown.Even with Jeffery in the lineup, the Bears offense has been atrocious this season. The Bears are averaging just 15.7 points per game, which ranks 31st in the league, just ahead of the Rams. That’s right, the Bears aren’t even scoring more points than the 0-10 Browns.The suspension comes at a fragile time for the both the Bears and Jeffery.On the Bears’ end, they’re coming off a 36-10 loss to Tampa Bay that left the organization embarrassed. After the 26-point loss, several players called out Jay Cutler for his “truly embarrassing” game preparation. It’s also been reported that Cutler has lost most of the locker room.On Jeffery’s end, the receiver is set to be a free agent at the end of the season, and it’s not going to be easy to cash-in if he’s coming off a down year. It’s also not going to be easy to cash-in if other teams think you’re a suspension risk.

Patrick Kane scored a spectacular tiebreaking goal in the second period and the Blackhawks beat Montreal 3-2 on Sunday night, handing the league-leading Canadiens just their second regulation loss of the season.Marian Hossa added his team-leading ninth and rookie Gustav Forsling scored his first in the NHL as the Blackhawks improved to 9-0-2 in their last 11 and ended Montreal’s four-game winning streak.Shea Weber and Andrei Markov scored for the Canadiens in a matchup of conference leaders.Both goalies faced teams from their hometowns. Canadiens backup Al Montoya, a Chicago native, made 32 saves. Corey Crawford, from Montreal, stopped 21 shots.Kane put the Hawks ahead 3-2 with 3:37 left in the second period to cap a terrific individual effort. Kane skated down the slot, fooled Jeff Petry with a move and chipped a shot past Montoya – while falling to the ice with Max Pacioretty checking him closely from behind.The 37-year-old Hossa has goals in four straight games and eight of nine. His 508th career goal on Sunday moved him past Canadiens icon Jean Beliveau into 40th place on the NHL’s all-time list.The Hawks haven’t lost in regulation since Oct. 21 at Columbus.Artem Anisimov, who entered tied with Kane for the Blackhawks points lead with 17, returned after missing one game with an upper-body injury.Montreal forward Andrew Shaw, a member of te Hawks 2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup teams, played his first game at the United Center following a salary cap-forced trade to the Canadiens last summer. Shaw got a standing ovation from the crowd of 21,762 during a video tribute in the first period.Forsling opened the scoring with 7:54 remaining in the first on a screened shot from the left point. With several players in front, the drive sailed past Montoya’s glove.The Canadiens went ahead with goals 1:41 apart and on consecutive shots early in the second.Weber tied it 1-1 just 59 seconds into the period with a fluke power-play goal. His shot from from a sharp angle – almost in the right corner – deflected off defenseman Michal Kempny’s stick and over Crawford’s shoulder.Markov put Montreal ahead at 2:40 on a high shot from the slot with Brian Campbell and Montreal’s Paul Byron screening in front.Hossa tied it 2-all with 8:31 left in the second. After Montoya made a left pad save on Nick Schmaltz’s shot from the blue line, Hossa popped in the rebound from the right edge of the crease.After Kane put the Blackhawks ahead, and they dominated and checked smartly in the third to hold on.Crawford also came up big when needed.
