Ferrell IU all time assist leader as Hoosiers rout Illini

Illinois Fighting Illini (2004 - 2013)

BLOOMINGTON—Kevin ”Yogi” Ferrell tried to stick to his normal routine Tuesday. Those around him refused. On a night No. 25 Indiana broke its own conference record for most 3-pointers in a Big Ten game and topped 100 points against a league foe for the first time in nearly four years, Ferrell was the center of attention. The senior point guard scored 16 points, made five 3s and finished with nine assists to break Michael Lewis’ school record while leading the Hoosiers to a 103-69 rout over Illinois.

”They (teammates) want Yogi to succeed because they know that Yogi is going to find them,” coach Tom Crean said. ”He sets the tone defensively, he sets the tone offensively.”

Especially in a game he didn’t want to be all about him.The Hoosiers (16-3, 6-0) had four players score in double figures, buckled down defensively and made 19 of 36 3-point attempts, breaking their own game school record (18) set last year against Minnesota. It is tied for the most by any Division I team this season.Troy Williams had a team-best 21 points and five assists and Max Bielfeldt finished with 16 points and eight rebounds as Indiana won its 11th straight. But with so many wanting to celebrate Ferrell’s milestones, the spotlight would not go away. The sellout crowd roared with approval when Ferrell delivered a nifty, no-look pass to Bielfeldt for a layup that gave Indiana a 19-11 lead with 11:19 left in the first half and Ferrell his 546th career assist, one more than Lewis.Behind the bench, Ferrell’s father kept count flashing signs each time his son notched another assist. The end came at 553.And when Crean pulled Ferrell for the final time, with 4:25 left, the coach grabbed his senior guard’s hand and raised it like Ferrell had just won the heavyweight champion.

”I didn’t know he was going to do that.” Ferrell said with a hearty laugh. ”But that was pretty special.”

Illinois (9-10, 1-5) was led by Malcolm Hill with 20 points and Kendrick Nunn with 10.But this one got away in a hurry.Indiana closed out the first half on a 20-4 run to take a 42-25 lead and opened the second half by making five of its first six shots to seal it.

Hawks tie team record with 11th straight win….5-2 over Habs

Patrick Kane had a big grin on his face as he skated around the back of the net to congratulate Artemi Panarin on his nifty pass in the third period.Lots of smiles for the Blackhawks these days. The Blackhawks matched a franchise record with their 11th straight victory, using two goals from Jonathan Toews to beat the slumping Montreal Canadiens 5-2 on Sunday.

”Every night’s a little bit different, but net-net I think we’re playing responsible, playing the score, playing the time, and got some momentum,” coach Joel Quenneville said.

Marian Hossa had an empty-net goal and two assists, and Kane had a goal and an assist. Richard Panik scored his first goal of the season, and Corey Crawford, a Montreal native, made 27 saves while improving to 5-0-2 in seven career starts against his hometown team. The Blackhawks (31-13-4) also won 11 straight from Feb. 15 to March 6, 2013, and then went on to the second of three Stanley Cup titles in the past six seasons. The defending NHL champions, who won 2-1 at Montreal on Thursday, go for 12 in a row at Nashville on Tuesday night.

”In 2013, we had an unbelievable stretch, but right now, definitely it’s another one,” Hossa said. ”It’s another new chapter and it’s just nice to see everybody contributing in a different way. Overall, it’s a winning attitude, so it’s nice to see.”

Montreal (23-19-4) has lost four in a row and five of six. The Canadiens also dropped to 6-15-2 since star goaltender Carey Price was shelved by a lower-body injury in November.

”We’re going to get out of this,” forward Brendan Gallagher said. ”It’s taken longer than we would have liked, but we’re going to get out of this. The only way we’re going to do that is sticking together as a group. Tonight we weren’t good enough.”

Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty scored for Montreal, and Ben Scrivens made 28 stops in his first start since Jan. 5 at Philadelphia. Scrivens, who was acquired in a Dec. 28 trade with Edmonton, is winless in three starts on the season. The Canadiens were coming off a 4-3 overtime loss at St. Louis on Saturday.

”It wasn’t the performance we were looking for after such a hard-fought, emotional game last night,” Pacioretty said.

Pacioretty’s power-play goal at 10:22 of the third got the Canadiens within one, but Kane responded for the Blackhawks just 71 seconds later. Kane got a great pass from Panarin and scored on a one-timer for his NHL-best 29th goal.

”Great play by him. It’s a safe play, too,” Kane said. ”He chips it in, beats his guy to the puck, and throws a great pass over between the guy’s legs and pretty much in that situation, you’re just trying to get it on net and surprise the goalie.”

Kane, who also leads the league with 40 assists, has eight goals and 11 assists in the last 11 games.Toews gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead with his 18th goal at 13:38 of the second, punching it home from in front of the net. The captain made the most of a fortunate carom right to him with 1:21 to go in the period, bringing the puck out from behind the net and beating Scrivens with a backhander.Toews has 10 goals and eight assists in his last 16 games.

”You know what, we just played, first of all, the Stanley Cup champion, they looked better than last year,” Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. ”They played with a lot of confidence. They’re capable of making plays in tight. They’re got some really, really quality hockey players. They’re tough to play against.”

NOTES—Erik Gustafsson returned after missing two games with an injury. He assisted on Panik’s goal. … The Blackhawks improved to 28-3-2 when they score the first goal of the game. … Canadiens RW Dale Weise played in his 300th NHL game. … The Hawks reassigned slumping forward Bryan Bickell to Rockford of the American Hockey League. The Wildcats entered the game making 9.1 3-pointers per game on average and are 8-0 when making 10 or more shots from beyond the arc. ”We weren’t very aggressive,” Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. ”When you continue to play like that your defense disintegrates.” Jack completed a 3-point play with 15:23 left for a 38-27 Penn State lead. Shep Garner and Taylor each nailed a 3 to extend the lead to 48-31.Demps then hit Northwestern’s first 3-pointer with 10:21 remaining to snap the Wildcats’ 0-for-17 skid from beyond the arc. Illini thumped at home by Nebraska

Illinois Fighting Illini (2004 - 2013)

CHAMPAIGN—On offense Saturday, Andrew White III started slowly. He hit just one shot from the field in the first half and went to the locker room with six points. But he also had a half dozen rebounds – something to build on.White finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Cornhuskers (11-8, 3-3 Big Ten) by Illinois, 78-67.

”I think mainly what got me going was getting on offensive rebounds,” White said. ”My rebounding on both ends was what sparked my offensive game.

The win was Nebraska’s third in four games.Illinois (10-9, 3-3) has lost four of its last five and continued to miss injured big men Mike Thorne Jr. and Leron Black. Both are out for the season and, without them, the Illini have struggled on the boards and to create any sort of inside offense. On Saturday, that left the Illini to launch 3-pointers, 37 of them in all, 62 percent of their 59 shots. They made just 11.Illinois coach John Groce said his team should never have taken that many long-range shots.

”No. Shot selection was awful,” he said. ”It was terrible.”

Glynn Watson Jr. scored 17 for Nebraska while Tai Webster added 16 and Shavon Shields 14.Nebraska used a 17-2 run to go up by 10 points late in the first half and never trailed over the game’s final 28 minutes.Malcolm Hill led Illinois with 17 points and seven assists. Kendrick Nunn added 15 points. With 14:05 left in the game and Illinois trying to claw its way back, White drained a 3-pointer that pushed Nebraska out to a 51-39 lead, matching the Cornhuskers’ largest lead of the game to that point.Nebraska outrebounded the Illini 42-24.The absence of Thorne and Black has left the Illini short on big bodies, and their disadvantage on the boards has been glaring most of the season. Opponents have outrebounded Illinois 659-569 on the season.

”I felt like we had to win the paint to win the game,” Nebraska coach Tim Miles said ”Because Thorne’s hurt, they don’t have a rim protector like (former Illinois center Nnanna) Egwu in the old days.”

Illinois’ frustration was obvious Saturday against a Cornhusker team that started no one taller than 6-foot-7.

”I hate to say,” said 6-10 forward Michael Finke, the tallest player on the Illinois roster. ”That’s inexcusable.”

He finished with three rebounds and 11 points, nine of them on 3-pointers.Illinois had closed the Nebraska lead to eight points on a 3-pointer by Nunn with six minutes to play and breathed life into what had been a mostly grumbling crowd. But at the other end, Nebraska used a pair of offensive boards to turn a pair of misses into a pair of third-chance points from White that pushed the lead back to 10 at 67-57 and quieted the State Farm Center.Nebraska went on a 17-2 run late in the first half that turned the game, opening up a double-digit lead in what had been a tight, back-and-forth contest.A pair of free throws from Webster put the Huskers up 33-23 with 4:05 left in the half.Illinois’ answer at the other was a quick, baseline 3-point attempt by Nunn that missed the basket by at least 3 feet.
