Rose sits, but Bulls get TEAM effort to stun Heat. Lucas goes off for 24.

Chicago Bulls Logo - Red bull with script above head

John Lucas III could feel it as soon as he stepped on the court. Shots were falling and they didn’t stop dropping until the final buzzer.Good thing, too, since Derrick Rose wasn’t available.Lucas scored 24 points, and the Bulls beat the Miami Heat 106-102 with their star sidelined in a charged showdown between the Eastern Conference’s top two teams Wednesday night.

The Bulls built a 16-point lead in the second quarter, were up 11 at halftime and boosted it back to 17 in the third after a push by the Heat. They then hung on after Miami pulled within two in the closing minute for their 11th victory in 12 games even though they were short-handed again. This time they were without Rose, but they won anyway on a night when Dwyane Wade scored 36 and LeBron James finished with 35 points for the Heat.

“We’re like a brotherhood,” Lucas said. “When one brother goes down, we have their back.”

Rose has now missed 11 games this season. Injuries have limited Richard Hamilton to just 16 games and Deng has missed time because of his injured left wrist, including the previous two games, but the Bulls keep winning. They beat Miami even though Wade did his best to lift the Heat down the stretch scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter. His jumper with 1:20 left cut it to 100-96, and it stayed that way until Kyle Korver hit two free throws with 17 seconds remaining. The Heat weren’t finished, though. James Jones nailed a 3 with 10 seconds left to make it a three point game, and he hit another one with 6.8 seconds to go after Korver buried two more free throws, pulling Miami within 104-102. Lucas then clinched it when he hit two foul shots with 6 seconds remaining, giving the Bulls the win on a night when Rose watched from the sideline with a strained groin. That had to feel particularly good since the Heat clinched the Eastern Conference championship the last time they visited Chicago. Wade said the Bulls missed Rose’s attacking ability. One thing they didn’t miss, though?

“They didn’t miss anything with the confidence and energy they played with,” Wade said.

Lucas provided a huge spark off the bench, missing his previous career-high by one point, and led six Bulls in double figures even though he had James guarding him. It didn’t matter if he was open or guarded, set or off-balance. He simply didn’t miss much. Lucas hit 9 of 12 shots, 3 of 5 3-pointers, in one of the best games of his career.

“That’s how he plays all the time — instant offense,” said C.J. Watson, who started at point guard for Rose.Joakim Noah chipped in with 14 points and four blocks. Korver and Ronnie Brewer scored 12, Luol Deng and Watson added 11 apiece. Bulls reserves outscored Miami’s 56-15, and the Bulls outrebounded the Heat 50-34. While Wade dominated down the stretch, James scored just two points in the fourth quarter, and Chris Bosh struggled the whole way for the Heat. He scored 12 but was only 3 for 15 from the field as Miami lost again after falling at Orlando the previous night.

“You can play great defense against them and they can still make [shots],” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “What we were trying to do, and the way the game was unfolding, is that we did not want to get anyone else going.”

He pointed out the 3-pointers by Jones and said the Bulls “did not play defense the way we would like in the second half.” Even so, they hit enough shots in the end, with Lucas leading the way against a team that cut him in the past.

“We know him [Lucas] well. That was probably part of it,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We were one of the teams that cut him. He’s a tough-minded player. That’s a good story line for a lot of young players out there that don’t have the mental toughness to stay with it. I don’t know how many times that kid has been cut, but it’s made him tougher.”

NOTES—Spoelstra indicated Miami won’t be too active before Thursday’s trade deadline. “Our focus is on this group,” he said. “We feel we have enough.” ….Heat F Mike Miller missed his second successive game because of a sprained left ankle, and Spoelstra said there’s no timetable for his return…..The Bulls again signed veteran guard Mike James to a 10-day contract.

ISU surprises Ole’Miss on the road in NIT opener.

OXFORD, Miss. — Tyler Brown scored 26 points, Nic Moore added 24 and Illinois State put on a record-setting shooting display in a 96-93 overtime victory over Mississippi on Wednesday night in the first round of the NIT. Illinois State (21-13) set a Tad Smith Coliseum record for 3-pointers, making 17 of 23 (73.9 percent) from beyond the arc.

“We’re a very good shooting team,” Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich said. “But this was crazy.”

Brown was 8 of 9 from 3-point range, while Moore made all six of his attempts. Illinois State shot 32 of 51 (62.7 percent) from the field overall, including 5 of 6 (83.3 percent) in overtime. LaDarius White scored 25 points and Terrance Henry added 21 for Ole Miss (20-14), which lost in the NIT’s first round for the second straight season.Brown put Illinois State up 61-49 after his seventh 3-pointer with 12:22 remaining in regulation and it looked as if the Redbirds would cruise, but Ole Miss rallied to tie it late and Jarvis Summers just missed a 10-foot jumper at the buzzer to send it to overtime.Brown actually did all of his damage in just 23 minutes, missing time because of a slight knee injury and then fouling out with 4:40 remaining in regulation. Moore was right there to pick up the slack, hitting three of his 3-pointers after Brown left the game.Illinois State scored the first two baskets in overtime and never looked back. The Rebels had the ball with a chance to tie or win down 95-93 with 10 seconds remaining, but Nick Williams threw a cross-court pass out of bounds and Anthony Cousin hit a final free throw and intentionally missed the second with 1.8 seconds left to seal the victory.Summers had his first career double-double for the Rebels with 16 points and 12 assists. Murphy Holloway added 16 points.

Canes 16-0 run puts away Valpo in NIT

CORAL GABLES—Rion Brown scored 18 points to lead Miami to a 66-50 win over Valparaiso on Wednesday night in the opening round of the NIT.The Hurricanes stretched a four-point lead and finished the game with a 16-0 run over the final 3:41. The Golden Gophers beat La Salle 70-61.Brown hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Hurricanes their first double-digit lead, 44-33, with 11:31 remaining. Brown shot 6 of 11 from the field, including 4 for 7 from beyond the arc.Ryan Broekhoff and Will Bogan each hit 3-pointers to lead a 9-0 run for Valparaiso (22-12). Richie Edwards‘ jumper with 6:50 remaining ended the surge and got the Crusaders within 48-45. Broekhoff scored 18 points and Richie Edwards finished with 16 for the under-manned Crusaders, who used only six players.

“The score was not an indication of how close the game was,” Valparaiso coach Bryce Drew said. “I thought twice today Miami gave us a standing eight count and our guys immediately came right back.”

Garrius Adams‘ basket with 5:42 remaining ended a 6-0 spurt and increased Miami’s lead to 54-45. Valparaiso responded with four unanswered points and got to within 54-50 on Erik Buggs‘ layup with 4:23 remaining.Miami was without leading scorer Durand Scott, who began serving a six-game suspension after being declared ineligible last week for receiving impermissible benefits. Scott, who also missed Friday’s loss to Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, was notified of the suspension earlier Wednesday.

NU sneak’s by Akron 76-74.

EVANSTON—Northwestern found a way to hang on and win a close game on Tuesday night.A potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer by Akron guard Alex Abreubounced off the glass, allowing the Wildcats to preserve a 76-74 first-round National Invitation Tournament victory over Akron at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

“It was pretty nerve-racking because we lost so many close ones this year,” said forward Drew Crawford, who closed with a game-high 27 points. “We were glad to see that shot miss.”

The win sends the Wildcats (19-13) into a second-round game against top-seeded Washington, which beat Texas-Arlington 81-72.John Shurna, the Wildcats’ career leading scorer, added 23 points and 11 rebounds and became the 27th player in Big Ten history with 2,000 or more points. He has 2,015. JerShon Cobb added 19 points for the hosts. Quincy Diggs led the Zips (22-12) with 18 points, Zeke Marshall had 17, Chauncey Gilliam had 12 and Nikola Cvetinovic added 10.Too many narrow losses probably helped cost Northwestern its first NCAA tournament berth, so the Wildcats now hope to compensate in their fourth straight NIT.

“We’re happy to get a win and continue to play basketball,” Shurna said.

Akron, which trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, bounced back in the second and led 70-69 with 4:05 to play following a Diggs 3 pointer. NU reclaimed the lead on Cobb’s baseline jumper a minute later and made it 73-70 on a Shurna putback.Gilliam tied the game with three free throws after Shurna fouled him with 2:21 left, but the Northwestern senior made up with his game-winning 3 pointer with 1:33 remaining.Diggs was fouled with 3.7 seconds left and the Zips down 76-73. He hit the first and missed the second, but Akron recovered possession to set up Abreu’s final try.

“We struggled early but we believed we could come back and we knew we had an opportunity,” Akron coach Keith Dambrot said. “We had to shore up and keep our composure, especially when you lose a heartbreaker like the last time out.”

Akron won the Mid-American Conference regular season title, but missed an NCAA berth when it fell 64-63 to Ohio in last Saturday’s MAC tournament championship game.Tuesday’s game was the Zips’ first NIT appearance since the 2007-08 season. In the first half, Northwestern used a 12-2 run over a 4:17 span to open a double-digit lead at 26-14. Shurna had a pair of 3 pointers in the span while Crawford had five. Akron’s 11-4 late run trimmed the halftime deficit to 42-34.The Zips pushed past the Wildcats for a 51-49 lead with 13 minutes left on a Nick Harneylayup. There were four more lead changes and three ties the rest of the way.Tuesday’s meeting was the first between the two programs. Northwestern is (48-17) against MAC teams. Shurna’s Big Ten milestone came on a short jumper with 6:24 left in the first half. He also had two first-half blocks and has a school-record 135.

Crawford comes off the bench, and Hawks rally past Blues 4-3 in a shootout

Corey Crawford was on the bench for a sixth straight game when the Blackhawks took the ice Tuesday. In the end, he was in front of the net, raising his hands in triumph after helping the Hawks beat the NHL-leading St. Louis Blues.Ray Emery was pulled after giving up three first-period goals, and Crawford pitched a shutout the rest of the way — through two periods, overtime and then against three skaters in a shootout — to give the Blackhawks a 4-3 victory.Brent Seabrook tied the game with a third-period, power-play goal. Patrick Kane had the only goal in the shootout, and the Blackhawks rallied from a 3-1 deficit and ended the Blues’ five-game winning streak. St. Louis lost despite getting 43 saves from Jaroslav Halak.Kane was the first skater in the tiebreaker and made a nice fake before beating Halak with a shot between the goalie’s legs. Crawford, stopped T.J. Oshie, Andy McDonald and David Perron to finish off the win.

“I was talking to [Marian] Hossa on the bench and said, ‘I think I’m going to go backhand top shelf.’ He said, ‘No, go backhand, five-hole,”‘ Kane said. “I listened to Hoss. He knows a thing or two.”

Seabrook’s long slap shot from the blue line on a power play sailed past a screened Halak and tied the game at 7:41 of the third. The score came on Chicago’s fifth power play, and ended the Blues’ streak of consecutive penalty kills at 51.

“I had a tough time seeing it. Their second goal, too,” Halak said.

The Blackhawks had six power plays overall in the rugged and physical game.Jamie Langenbrunner, McDonald and Berglund had goals in the first period for St. Louis.

“The lead came too easy to us. We didn’t have to work for it,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “`They were coming at us, and we were on our heels, and we stayed on our heels most of the night,” he added. “When we had the lead 3-1, we started playing with skill over work, started turning the puck over at the offensive blue line, that gave them all the momentum.”

Andrew Brunette opened the scoring, and Viktor Stalberg added a goal in the second period. Halak, who had won eight straight, made nice stops on Kane and Hossa in overtime. Kane had two other chances in the closing seconds of the extra period. The Blues managed only six shots in the first period, but three eluded Emery as St. Louis quickly erased a 1-0 deficit. Brunette took a nifty pass from Hossa that split two defenders and then skated in and beat Halak at 2:51 of the opening period. But the Blues responded 59 seconds later as Langenbrunner rifled a long shot from beyond the right circle that beat the apparently screened Emery.About three minutes later, McDonald took a nice back pass from Perron and drove the puck past Emery for a 2-1 lead. Berglund then tipped in Barrett Jackman’s hard shot from the left point to put the Blues up by two late in the first and prompted the goalie change between periods.Emery has taken over for stretches this season when Crawford, who was supposed to be the starter, has struggled. This time Crawford came in to relieve.

“In a tough spot, the game’s on the line, you haven’t played in a while, we know the importance of it, and [Corey Crawford] responded the way we were hoping he’d respond. That’s good for him and great for us,” coach Joel Quenneville said.

The Hawks got a goal late in the second when a shot by Marcus Kruger deflected off Halak. The puck hit Stalberg’s instep and then went between the goalie’s legs to make it 2-1.

NOTES—Jonathan Toews missed his 11th straight game with a concussion…..McDonald scored his ninth goal of the season and fourth against the Blackhawks…..The chippy first period included two fights, including one between Brandon Bollig and the Blues’ Ryan Reaves with four seconds left, following Reaves’ hard check on Jamal Mayers.

Marshall law coming to Soldier Field as Bears reunite Cutler with his former Widout.

Just before free agency opened at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the Bears made a bold move, trading two third-round picks to the Dolphins in exchange for wide receiver Brandon Marshall. The the picks are a third-rounder in 2012 and a third-rounder again in 2013.The Dolphins originally gave up two second-round picks when they traded for Marshall from Denver in April of 2010. They then handed Marshall a big contract extension.Marshall is now reunited with his old quarterback in Denver, Jay Cutler. While playing with Cutler in Denver, Marshall broke out in a big way, catching 226 balls for 2,899 yards and 15 touchdowns in three years, which includes a rookie season of just 20 catches and 309 yards.Marshall’s seen less success since coming to Miami: he hasn’t caught more than 86 balls in a single season and only has nine touchdowns with the Dolphins.Marshall will make $9.3 million in 2012 and $9.1 million in 2013 and 2014. So the Dolphins clear up some major cap room with a move to deal Marshall — Marshall had a cap number of $11.35 million in 2012.And while it might seem like the Dolphins are giving up on their chase for Peyton Manning, this is not the case. There were rumblings that Manning wasn’t thrilled about throwing to Marshall, who had (according to Pro Football Focus) the most drops in the NFL (51) over the past four years. Additionally, Marshall’s had problems off the field as well. He was involved in a domestic dispute that led to him being stabbed in the stomach. Now the Dolphins are situated, if they so choose, to chase Reggie Wayne, who attended college in Miami, and use him to lure Peyton to South Beach.

Rookie Jimmy Butler played a key role with eight points in 29 minutes, making several big energy plays to excite the sellout crowd. The Bulls’ dominance on the boards led to the key basket of the game midway through the fourth quarter. With the shot clock expiring, Rose flipped up a long shot that bounced off the back of the rim, but Gibson chased down the rebound, bringing the United Center crowd to its feet. Then Rose cut behind Lin, who had turned his head, took a bounce pass from Noah and threw down a thunderous, one-handed dunk to put the Bulls ahead 91-84 with 6:01 to play.A couple of minutes later, Butler put an exclamation point on his performance by roaring in from the baseline to dunk Boozer’s missed shot.Anthony hit a 3 to cut the lead to four with 49.8 seconds remaining but that was as close as the Knicks got.In the third quarter, Rose capped a 12-2 run with a floater off a crossover that left Lin in the dust, giving the Bulls a seven-point lead. The Knicks responded with an 11-5 spurt of their own, all of the points coming from Stoudemire and Anthony, who combined for 21 points in the third. The Bulls took a one-point lead into the final quarter after Noah hit a foul-line jumper off a feed from Butler. Noah had six points and six rebounds in the quarter. The Knicks led 50-48 after a hotly-contested first half that featured 32 free throw attempts and a pair of technical fouls, one on each coach. The Bulls came out aggressive, pushing the ball up the floor at every opportunity, and took 29 shots in the first quarter alone. The Bulls hit just 40 percent in the opening half, with Rose going 5 for 15 from the floor. He led with 13 points, while Gibson added seven points and seven boards. The Knicks looked crisp on offense early but faltered as the first half wore on and the pace slowed. Tyson Chandler had 11 points and five boards before the break and Lin added eight points and five assists.New York got the final point of the first half on a technical free throw by Anthony, who had eight points and a team-high six rebounds at the half. Tom Thibodeau was hit with the technical after arguing a charging call against Brian Scalabrine.

NOTES—The Bulls were missing three players, including two starters, on Monday. All-Star forward Luol Deng sat out for the second straight game after his left wrist injury flared up during last Thursday’s loss to Orlando. Starting guard Richard Hamilton missed his fourth straight game because of a right shoulder contusion and minor sprain. He has missed 27 games this season due to various injuries. Backup point guard C.J. Watson missed his fifth game in a row because of a sprained left ankle. All three players are considered day-to-day by the team.. Knicks reserve Jared Jeffries missed the game because of a sore left knee. New York coach Mike D’Antoni said he expects Jeffries to return for Wednesday’s game against Portland.. The Bulls haven’t lost consecutive games since Feb. 5-7, 2011 – a franchise-record stretch of 75 games.. The Bulls improved to 30-0 when leading after three quarters.

No Hamilton,Noah,Deng or Watson, but Bulls still beat Jazz 111-97

Chicago Bulls Logo - Red bull with script above head

Derrick Rose had 24 points and 13 assists, Carlos Boozer scored 27 and the Bulls pounded the Utah Jazz 111-97 on Saturday night.Kyle Korver scored a season-high 26 points, and the Bulls got back to winning after their season-high eight-game streak ended with a loss to Orlando on Thursday. They turned a seven-point halftime lead into a 16-point advantage going into the fourth quarter and came away with a lopsided victory on a night when both teams were short-handed.The Bulls were missing All-Star Luol Deng, who was out because of pain brought on by a torn ligament in his left wrist. Joakim Noah sat out with an illness, and guards Richard Hamilton (right shoulder injury) and C.J. Watson remained sidelined. The Jazz were without starting guards Devin Harris (stomach virus) and Raja Bell, who was away from the team for unspecified reasons. Coach Tyrone Corbin called it “an internal matter” that he expects to be resolved soon.Utah had no answer for the Bulls, though.Rose perked up after a slow start and Boozer and Korver dominated their former team, leading the Bulls to an easy win. The Bulls still haven’t dropped back-to-back games this season, and that wasn’t about to change on a night when they shot just under 56 percent.Boozer made 13 of 17 shots. Korver was on target, too, nailing 6 of 11 3-pointers, and had seven rebounds and six assists in his best game of the season. Paul Millsap led Utah with 26 points. Al Jefferson scored 16 and Josh Howard added 15 points, but the Jazz simply were overwhelmed, losing for the second time in as many nights.Rose scored seven points over the final 3:24 of the first half to help the Bulls build a 48-41 lead after Utah pulled within two at 39-37, and the Home team dominated the rest of the way.The Bulls scored 31 in the third quarter, and led by as much as 18 in the final minute of the period. The crowd was roaring after John Lucas III stole the ball from Jamaal Tinsley and fed Taj Gibson for a hard two-handed dunk. Ronnie Brewer then stole a pass from Al Jefferson and hit two free throws to make it 79-61 with 12.8 seconds left, before Tinsley nailed a short turnaround jumper.

NOTES—Asked before the game if Bell’s situation would be a distraction, Corbin said: “No distraction, no. I wouldn’t expect so. We’ve got the Bulls, and that’s enough distraction for everybody.” … Watson appears close to returning after missing his fourth straight game. “He did some running, some shooting today,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “The swelling’s down. We’ll see where he is [Sunday].”

Big second half leads Rush to season opening 70-48 win over Tampa Bay

Chicago Sky

ROSEMONT—Pre-game fireworks ignited the momentum on a high-scoring opening night as the Rush defeated the Tampa Bay Storm 70-48. A combined seventy point first half kept the 9,124 fans on their toes at the Allstate Arena on Saturday night.Rush linebacker Kelvin Morris began the scoring by returning an interception 25-yards for a touchdown on Tampa Bay’s first offensive possession.Despite the shaky start, Storm QB Stephen Wasil would be involved on all eight Tampa scoring drives by running for four and throwing 47, 43, 30 and 17-yard touchdown passes. After connecting on his third touchdown pass late in the second quarter, an unsuccessful surprise onside kick would allow Rush QB Russ Michna to find WR Marquis Hamilton to tie the game at 35 heading into halftime. The Rush offensive weapons were plentiful throughout the night as Reggie Gray (7 receptions, 80 yards, 4 TD), Marquis Hamilton (10 receptions, 117 yards, 3 TD) and Jared Perry (6 receptions, 41 yards, 1 TD) allowed QB Russ Michna to break the franchise record for touchdown passes in a game with eight. Michna would finish 24-37 on the night for 237 yards.

“We have a group of guys running around here that are really talented, some truly unbelievable talent,” mentioned Rush QB Russ Michna.

Three goal outburst gives Blackhawks 4-3 win over Rangers and season sweep of two game series.

Johnny Oduya and the Blackhawks took full advantage of a handful of late chances — and New York mistakes.Oduya scored his first goal for the Blackhawks with 5:56 left in the third period to snap a tie in the Blackhawks’ 4-3 comeback victory over the Rangers on Friday night. The Blackhawks handed the Eastern Conference-leading Rangers their third straight loss and fourth in five games.Oduya connected from the left point with a shot that sailed past Henrik Lundqvist on the glove side to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead, its first of the game. Oduya was acquired from Winnipeg just before the trade deadline.Patrick Kane added an empty-net goal with 53 seconds left to make it 4-2. It stood up as the winner after New York’s Brad Richards connected from the left circle 8 seconds later.Patrick Sharp scored 1:02 before Oduya to cap a nifty passing play with Marian Hossa and Kane, and tie it at 2. Oduya also set up a goal by rookie Andrew Shaw in the second period to help Chicago win for the fourth time in five games.

“It was fun hockey at the end,” Kane said. “These points are huge, especially against one of the best teams in the league.”

The three-goal flurry in 6:05 span late in the third came after the Rangers limited the Blackhawks and controlled most of the game.Artem Anisimov and Brandon Prust also scored for New York.Ray Emery stopped 22 shots. He was making his fourth straight start, and also appeared in his seventh straight game, relieving Corey Crawford in two of them. The Rangers, who have given up 19 goals in their last five games, opened with a tightened defensive effort and seemed to be in command as the game wound down. Lundqvist, who wasn’t heavily tested until late, made 18 saves. The game was the second this season between the Original Six teams. The Blackhawks snapped a season-high, nine-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory in New York on Feb. 16. The Rangers had several prime chances in the first period, but didn’t connect until Anisimov opened the scoring with 47 seconds left following a botched clearing attempt. When Kane couldn’t handle the puck on the boards near the Hawk blue line, New York’s John Mitchell slipped the puck to Anisimov alone in the slot. Anisimov took the pass with his back to Emery, then spun and tucked in a shot in the lower right corner. The Rangers limited the Hawk’s offense for most of the second, but Shaw tied it at 1 with 5:32 left in the period on a tip of Oduya’s shot from the left point.Oduya fired into traffic, the puck struck the blade of Shaw’s stick about 2 feet above the ice and flipped past Lundqvist.A turnover at center ice led to Prust’s goal at 7:11 of the third that gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead. Emery dropped to the ice to stop Ryan McDonagh’s shot from the top of the slot. But Prust was wide open just to the left of the net and easily slipped in the rebound. Then the Blackhawks rallied with three goals — on three shots — in a 6:05 span to take the 4-2 lead.

NOTES—New York C Brandon Dubinsky sat out his second game after being injured in a fight with New Jersey’s Ryan Carter early in a 4-1 loss Tuesday night at New Jersey. Dubinsky, who sustained a hand injury and a cut to the nose in the fight, is experiencing sinus pressure and is listed as day-to-day…..Jonathan Toews missed his ninth game because of an upper-body injury, believed to be a concussion. Toews skated for second straight day Friday morning….Niklas Hjalmarrson returned after missing six straight games and 13 of 14 with a reported concussion.
