Sox win again on game ending HR, this time from Rios.

Here’s one way to interrupt White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen while he is watching a Spanish soap opera: hit a ninth-inning home run. After being ejected in the top half of the ninth for arguing a ground-rule double call that led to two runs, Guillen was watching TV in his office when Paul Konerko homered with one out. He then watched as Alex Rios hit the Sox second straight game-ending homer to beat the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Saturday.Trailing 4-2 in the ninth with one out, Konerko hit a solo home run off Mariners closer David Aardsma (0-1). With two outs, Carlos Quentin walked. Then, a day after Andruw Jones hit a game-ending home run, Rios hit a 1-1 pitch in the left-field bleachers to win it.The White Sox won back-to-back games with game-ending home runs for the first since J.C. Martin and Ken Berry did it in a doubleheader against Cleveland on July 25, 1967.In the top of the inning, Casey Kotchman hit a two-run ground-rule double to give the Mariners a two-run lead. With two outs, Jose Lopez single off White Sox closer Bobby Jenks. After a walk to Ken Griffey Jr. Kotchman lined a double down the right-field line. A fan picked up the ball and dropped it back on the field.First base umpire Gary Cederstrom declared the play dead as Lopez scored. But the umpiring crew allowed Jack Wilson, who was pinch running for Griffey, to score from first to give Seattle a 4-2 lead.Guillen argued with third base umpire Fieldin Culbrethl and was ejected for using foul language. Culbreth said discretion was used in determining if Wilson should score.Jenks (1-0) got his first win after pitching the ninth.Mariners starter Doug Fister allowed to runs while scattering eight hits. He struck out four and walked one.Franklin Gutierrez homered for the Mariners, who lost its second straight game. The Mariners allowed back-to-games game-ending homers for the first time since Aug. 23-24, 2002.With two outs in the fifth, Rios singled off Fister. After Rios stole second, Mark Teahen hit a single to right. With Ichiro Suzuki’s strong arm in right, Rios was held up at third base. Ramirez followed with a long fly to left. Seattle outfielder Eric Byrnes propped up against the wall and the ball deflected off his mitt. The ball bounced off the top of fence and came back into the playing field.Rios scored and Teahen scored from first to give the White Sox a 2-1 lead. Ramirez wound up at second base with his third double of the season.Guillen briefly questioned the call, but went back to the dugout after he got an explanation from Culbreth and no replay was necessary. The Mariners came back in the seventh inning on Lopez’s double off Freddy Garcia who pitched seven innings and allowed two runs and two hits.

NOTES—Wilson was out of Saturday’s starting lineup with an injured right thumb that he sustained while fielding a groundball on Friday. Manager Don Wakamatsu was encouraged by the lack of swelling in Wilson’s thumb and said he could hopefully play on Sunday…..Milton Bradley (calf) is improving but he is unlikely to play Sunday. Wakamatsu said if everything goes well Bradley could play Monday in Kansas City.

Milwaukee Brewers logo

MILWAUKEE—Ryan Dempster was on top of his game, again, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He beat Milwaukee for the fourth consecutive time and Kosuke Fukudome and Tyler Colvin homered to help the Cubs to an 8-1 win over the Brewers on Friday night.Dempster (2-0) gave up one run on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one to improve 9-1 in his last 11 starts against Milwaukee. His effort picked up the Cubs who had lost five of the last six games.Dempster cooled off the Brewers who had outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 36-1 during a three-game sweep, including Thursday’s 25-hit, 20-0 pounding. He didn’t allow a runner past second until the seventh when the Brewers pushed across a run on Craig Counsell’s pinch-hit double.Dempster improved to 9-1 in his last 11 starts against the Brewers. The Cubs are 9-2 in that stretch, including winning the last four games.Dempster threw 111 pitches, 69 of them for strikes. He caught a huge two-run break in the bottom of the first.Crew chief John Hirschbeck reviewed Prince Fielder’s blast to deep center which appeared to land behind the yellow line atop the wall. Second base umpire James Hoye ruled it a double instead of Fielder’s second home run of the season. Macha asked for the review which barely took a minute. Hirschbeck let the call stand. Ryan Braun stayed at third and Casey McGehee ground out to third to end the inning and preserve the Cubs’ 2-0 lead.Fielder said he saw the ball bounce and just wanted the umps to check it.Mike Fontenot’s one-out RBI-single in the fifth, the third consecutive hit, forced Brewers manager Ken Macha to pull Jeff Suppan (0-1) who was booed off the field. Koyie Hill singled off reliever Claudio Vargas to drive in Marlon Byrd. Each position player had at least one hit off Suppan who gave up six runs and 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings.Ryan Theriot tripled to drive in a run in the fourth.Fukudome hit Suppan’s first pitch of the third inning into the right-field bleachers. The Cubs pushed across two runs in the first.Theriot doubled and scored on a double by Fukudome. Derrek Lee followed with a single. Byrd’s fly to right was the second out, but it was deep enough for Fukudome to advance. Suppan had Lee picked off first, but in the run down Fukudome broke for home. Catcher Gregg Zaun had no chance on shortstop Alcides Escobar’s wild throw as Fukudome scored.Suppan’ success comes from hitting the corners and changing speeds. He did neither against the Cubs when it mattered.

NOTES—Aramis Ramirez’s 0-for-19 slump kept him on the bench. … Starter-turned-reliever Carlos Zambrano settled into his new bullpen routine Friday and should be ready for an appearance on Saturday. … Cubs LHP Ted Lilly makes his first start of the season Saturday. He’s been on the disabled list since April 4 with a left shoulder arthroscopic debridement. … Football returns to Wrigley Field for the first time since the Chicago Bears played there in 1970 when Northwestern plays Illinois on Nov. 20. … Macha said that the commissioner’s office denied the team’s request to have Fred Dabney shadow bullpen coach Stan Kyles during the series with Pittsburgh. Kyles is expected to be out 4-to-6 weeks after undergoing prostate surgery. Dabney, the pitching coach at Class A Brevard County, officially became the interim bullpen coach on Friday when Kyles left the team.

Jones homer gets lifts Sox past M’s

Andruw Jones hit a game-ending home run in the ninth inning and also homered in the first, leading the White Sox to a 7-6 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Paul Konerko homered and drove in two runs and Alex Rios hit a tying RBI double for the White Sox, who won for the second time in eight games.Jones, who turned 33 on Friday, signed a one-year deal worth $500,000 plus incentives with the White Sox in the offseason after coming off three straight seasons of batting .222 or lower. Jones did not have an everyday position during spring training but has worked himself in lineup with six home runs and a .293 average. After an impressive spring training Guillen told him if he continues to hit he will play.Jones still believes he can be the player he was five years ago and prove his doubters wrong that he isn’t washed up.Former Mariners reliever Matt Thornton (2-1) was dominant. The White Sox left-hander had five strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings for the victory. With two outs in the ninth, Jones came back from an 0-2 to count to homer off Mariners reliever Mark Lowe (1-2) into the left field bullpen.Jose Lopez hit his first career grand slam in the seventh inning for the Mariners who lost for just the second time in nine games.Gavin Floyd was unable to hold a 5-2 lead in the seventh inning, loading the bases before J.J. Putz relieved. After an out, Lopez homered.Lopez took advantage of playing behind Putz when they were teammates. The Mariners bullpen failed to hold the lead in the seventh when Rios greeted Brandon League with an RBI double to make it 6-all.Milton Bradley was back in Chicago and although he was out of the lineup with a sore calf, Bradley met with the Chicago media before the game for the first time since his 2009 season ended when the Cubs suspended Bradley after a verbal altercation with their hitting coach, and after he criticized the atmosphere of the organization.Bradley told a Chicago TV station that he felt misrepresented by the media.

“As a black man playing this game, I just don’t feel like … you know, the majority of the media is middle-aged white guys, so I don’t think you can accurately construe what I have to say, or portray me as who I am, because you don’t know,” Bradley called himself a “nerd” and said he plays scrabble with Mariners reliever Shawn Kelly in the bullpen. If Bradley plays during the three-games series, he won’t care what kind of reception he gets from the Chicago fans.Mariners starter Ryan Rowland-Smith pitched 5 1/3 inning and allowed five runs — three earned — on six hits.Floyd was unable to hold an early 2-0 lead. Chone Figgins broke an 0-for-17 slump, with an RBI double down the right-field line and Ken Griffey Jr. grounded into a run-scoring fielder’s choice.Konerko’s RBI single in the fourth put the White Sox up 3-2.Konerko added his sixth home run in the sixth inning and Carlos Quentin scored on Donny Lucy fielder’s choice. Quentin broke out of 0 for 23 slump with a homer in the second inning. In the first inning, Jones hit Rowland-Smith’s first pitch off the foul pole for his fifth home run.

NOTES—With LHP Cliff Lee expected to be activated from the DL and make his season debut on April 30. Wakamatsu said one of the current starting pitchers would likely get bumped into the bullpen rather than get sent to Triple-A Tacoma….Bradley (calf) could return this weekend but his status is still uncertain……Jack Wilson underwent X-rays on his thumb after sustaining an injury in the third inning.

Rush rout Utah 63-40, now 4-0

Chicago Sky

The Rush used a dominant all-around performance to reach 4-0 for only the second time in team history, knocking off the Utah Blaze 63-40 in front of 7,459 fans Friday night at Allstate Arena. The Rush passing game was on full display as quarterback Russ Michna went 22 for 31 putting up a season-high 330 passing yards, and six passing touchdowns to go along with his first rushing touchdown of the season. For the second straight week, Michna’s favorite target proved to be Nichiren Flowers, who caught a nine passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, the Rush defense held the Blaze to a Rush opponent season low 40 points. And although the defense only forced one turnover – Nygel Rogers’ league-leading fifth interception of the season – the Rush stopped the Blaze offense on three fourth down attempts.Utah quarterback quarterback Brett Elliot (31-44, 316 yards, five touchdowns, one interception) led the blaze on a six-play drive to open the game, ultimately connecting with Aaron Boone on a four-yard touchdown to give Utah a 7-0 lead. That was the only lead the Blaze would take all game. The Rush got the ball back at its 16-yard line after a Blaze penalty, and on its very first play from scrimmage Michna connected with Samie Parker for a 34-yard touchdown. The score was the third time in as many games that the Rush has gotten into the end zone on its first offensive play from scrimmage. The next five minutes belonged to Clifton Smith. On the ensuing Blaze possession, Smith recorded his league-leading third sack on a third down and 10 at the Rush 19. But he wasn’t done yet. On fourth down, Smith blocked a Utah field goal attempt, giving the Rush the ball back at their own 7-yard line. After driving to the Utah 1-yard line, Smith rumbled his way into the end zone for his first rushing touchdown of the season and a 14-7 Rush lead.Utah began the second quarter with the ball, but just like it has the entire year, the Rush defense stepped up, stopping the Blaze on fourth down at the Rush 7. Three plays later, Michna connected with Flowers on a 29-yard touchdown that put the Rush up two scores.Even with a 21-7 cushion, the Rush defense didn’t let up, and on the next Blaze possession Rogers stepped in front of an Elliot pass for his league leading fifth interception of the season. The teams then traded scores in the final minutes of the first half, giving the Rush a 28-14 lead at the break. The Rush received the ball to start the second half and seamlessly drove down the field before Michna hooked up with Alan Turner, this time for a 3-yard score that put the Rush up 35-14.Utah responded with a quick score that made it 35-20, but with just under 6 minutes to go in the third quarter Michna hooked up Flowers for the second time of the game, making it 42-20. The Rush never looked back and the Blaze never got within 18 points the rest of the game.

NOTES—Chris Martin led the Rush with 12 total tackles on the game…. Kicker Chris Gould made all nine of his PAT attempts, extending his streak of consecutive PATs to 29 – just three shy of Dan Frantz team record. Rush starting WR Kenny Higgins and DL Joe Peters both missed the game with injuries.

NU and Illinois to play at Wrigley Field for first time since 1923

The  Cubs and Northwestern University today announced the Northwestern Wildcats football team will host the University of Illinois at Wrigley Field Saturday, November 20, 2010, at 11 a.m. CT. The matchup will mark the first college football game at Wrigley Field since 1938, when DePaul University played home games at the ballpark. The contest will be the first football game of any kind at the Friendly Confines since the Chicago Bears last played there in December of 1970 and defeated the Green Bay Packers.

“Having Wrigley Field as the backdrop for a college football rivalry with such a rich history is exciting since the ballpark has gone nearly 40 years since last hosting a football game,” said Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts. “It is terrific to partner with Northwestern University and an honor to play host to college football and great programs like NU and the U of I.”

Tickets for this game will be available through the Northwestern Ticket Office. In order to purchase a ticket for the November 20 game, fans must purchase season tickets for Northwestern ‘ s five home games at Ryan Field. In addition, I want to thank our University administration who were involved with this event throughout. The true winner in this special game will be our student-athletes and fans. We have every intention to make this year ‘ s annual rivalry game a spectacular and memorable event. We were all captivated by the Wrigley Field atmosphere during the NHL ‘ s Winter Classic, and we want to recreate that fantastic fan experience, this time with college football.”

This will be the first time in more than 87 years that Northwestern and Illinois will play at Wrigley Field. On October 27, 1923, the Wildcats and the Illini squared off at the Friendly Confines (then called Cubs Park ) in front of 32,000 fans. This year’s Northwestern-Illinois game with mark the 104th game between the Big Ten Conference rivals since the two first met in 1892.Wrigley Field, built in 1914 and home of the Cubs since 1916, regularly hosted football games from 1916-70, including roughly 370 NFL games. The primary football tenants were the Chicago Bears, who called Wrigley Field home from 1921-70, but the ballpark also hosted the Chicago Tigers (1920) and the Chicago Cardinals (1920, 1931-39). Besides Northwestern, DePaul and the University of Illinois , other colleges to play at Wrigley Field include Loyola, which in 1926 hosted Arkansas Tech before playing DePaul a year later.

Bulls hold on, edge Cavs as James misses six of thirteen freethrows

LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers can forget about sweeping the Bulls out of the playoffs.Derrick Rose scored 31 points, Kirk Hinrich added 27 and the Bulls hung on to beat the top-seeded Cavaliers 108-106 Thursday night in Game 3 of a first-round series after its 21-point lead dwindled to one.James scored 13 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter but also committed some turnovers down the stretch. Even so, the Cavaliers were within 107-106 after Mo Williams nailed a 3-pointer with 3.8 seconds left. They immediately fouled Luol Deng, who hit the first free throw but missed the second.Cleveland’s Anthony Parker got the rebound and raced up the right side but the Naperville native missed a 3 at the buzzer, and the Bulls escaped with the win despite some shaky foul shooting late in the game. They will try to tie the best-of-7 series on Sunday.Hinrich, a career 80.9 percent foul shooter, missed two with 26 seconds left and the Bulls up 104-99.James then buried a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to make it a two-point game. The Cavaliers immediately fouled Rose, who missed the first free throw before converting the second to make it 105-102 with 10.1 seconds left. The Bulls fouled Anderson Varejao to prevent a 3-point attempt, and he made the first but missed the second. Brad Miller got the rebound and converted both foul shots to make it a four-point game, and the Bulls hung on after a few more twists. The Bulls appeared to be in good shape up 21 in the third, only to see the Cavaliers cut it all the way to 94-92 on a pair of free throws and a layup by Antawn Jamison with 4:10 remaining in the game.Deng, who scored 20, then made a jumper and Joakim Noah stole a pass from James. That led to a jumper by Rose, who then buried a fadeaway as the crowd chanted “Let’s go Bulls!” to make it 100-92 with 2:42 remaining.James also charged into Deng with 1:18 remaining and the Bulls up by six, then got stripped by Noah. Deng picked up the loose ball and Hinrich hit two free throws to make it 104-96 with 38 seconds remaining.Several times the Bulls looked as if they might run away with this one. They were leading 39-23 early in the second after a three-point play by Deng capped an 18-5 run that started in the first, whipping the crowd into a frenzy, and they finished the half with a flourish after Cleveland pulled within seven.Miller hit a 19-footer with a minute left and Hinrich nailed 20-footer from the wing to make it 56-45 before Noah blocked a driving layup by James in the closing seconds. The Bulls continued to pour it on in the third. Taj Gibson started it with a jumper and capped the run with another one, making it 68-47 with 7:37 left in the third. The Cavaliers responded with a 13-0 run, but the Bulls held their ground.Hinrich nailed a 3-pointer with about 4:10 left in the quarter after two free throws by Varejao cut the lead to eight. Gibson then dunked and Deng brought the crowd to its feet, crashing to the floor on a wild reverse layup before a free throw by Hinrich made it a 14-point game.

NOTES—James was just 7-13 from the foul line while the Cavs as a team were a subpar 20-31….Cavaliers G Delonte West’s trial on weapons charges has been postponed until July 21, meaning he won’t miss any playoff time. Authorities say West was carrying two loaded handguns, a loaded shotgun and an 8½-inch Bowie knife while riding a three-wheel motorcycle on the Capital Beltway in Maryland in September. Police say he was pulled over after cutting off an officer. … Ron Howard got a loud ovation when he was shown midway through the second quarter.

Hawks wake up, blank Preditors to even series 2-2

NASHVILLE—Patrick Sharp scored his first two goals of the postseason, and the Blackhawks finally found their offensive form Thursday in beating the Nashville Predators 3-0 to tie their opening series at 2-2.Rookie Antti Niemi stopped 33 shots for his second shutout and Jonathan Toews also scored his first playoff goal and had an assist. Marian Hossa had an assist, just his second in the series. The Blackhawks made a couple lineup changes, including playing defenseman Brian Campbell for the first time since he broke his collarbone and a rib March 14.Nashville lost its first Game 4 in three tries on home-ice. The Predators gave no offensive support to goalie Pekka Rinne, who had allowed only two even-strength goals the first three games.Game 5 is Saturday in the United Center. It was a party-like atmosphere with a band outside the arena before the game and a sellout crowd inside trying to will the Predators to a victory that would have given the franchise its first-ever 3-1 series lead. Nashville outhit and outshot the Hawks 33-30 but couldn’t get anything past Niemi. The Predators have yet to score with the man advantage in this series, and a team that ranked 24th in the NHL in the regular season on the power play sorely missed top goal-scorer Patric Hornqvist, who missed his third straight game. They couldn’t even convert with a 5-on-3 in the first after the Hawks led 1-0 and now are 0 for 17 on the power play. The Hawks spent the off day trying to crank up the NHL’s third-highest scoring offense. It worked. The Blackhawks went up 1-0 as Sharp scored his first goal of the postseason, flipping the puck over a sprawling Rinne with 10:57 gone in the first period. But it was with the man advantage just 10 seconds after Nashville defenseman Francis Bouillon was called for interference.Nashville got the 5-on-3 when Tomas Kopecky boarded Nashville defenseman Kevin Klein, leaving him laying on the ice for a couple of minutes at 15:05 and then Dave Bolland flipped the puck out of the rink trying to clear it. Not that it mattered. Predators center David Legwand was called for goaltender interference, leaving only 32 seconds on the power play for a 4-on-3.Then the tempers started flaring.Rinne went sprawling to defend the post against a puck sliding just to the outside, and Blackhawks right wing Troy Brouwer was in front trying to score off a rebound when Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter started defending his goalie, starting lots of pushing and shoving. Nashville had a chance to tie it up at 10:54 of the second when Steve Sullivan got the puck on a breakaway only to see Niemi stick out his right leg for the stop. The Blackhawks made it 2-0 with only its third even-strength goal this series as Hossa passed toward the front of the net from the right circle, and Toews tipped it in at 12:55 for his first goal of the postseason. Sharp made it 3-0 with 16:17 gone as he flipped the puck at the net from the inside edge of the right circle.

NOTES—The Blackhawks changed up the lineup, sitting Ben Eager and Colin Fraser and playing right wing Adam Burish and rookie forward Bryan Bickell for the first time this series. … Hornqvist took part in the morning skate but was scratched. … Nashville now is 2-3 in Game 4.

Rays blow away Sox again as Peavy walks seven.

Carlos Pena drove in four runs and the Rays took advantage of Jake Peavy’s wildness to beat the White Sox 10-2 on Thursday night, capping the winningest road trip in Tampa Bay history. The Rays, who were 32-49 on the road last year, have never finished a season with a winning record away from Tropicana Field. But they went 9-1 on their first trip this year, outscoring their opponents (Baltimore, Boston and the Sox) by a total of 69-23.James Shields (2-0) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings for the Rays (12-4), off to the best start in their 13-year history. Pat Burrell, Reid Brignac and Carl Crawford drove in two runs each.Peavy (0-1), acquired from San Diego last July 31 in a much-hyped trade, set a career high with seven walks while also giving up seven hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. In the first year of the $52 million contract extension he signed while with the Padres, Peavy has a 7.66 ERA in four starts. The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner was hurt when the Sox got him last year and wasn’t able to pitch until September, when the team was out of the AL Central race. The rotation was supposed to be the club’s strength, but White Sox starters have a 5.58 ERA — which explains why they are in last place at 5-11. Tampa Bay starters, meanwhile, lead the majors with a 2.67 ERA.Not even manager Ozzie Guillen’s pep talk after Wednesday’s 12-0 loss could spark the White Sox, who have dropped six of their last seven games and have yet to win a series this season.A.J. Pierzynski’s RBI grounder and Mark Teahen’s second-inning homer put the White Sox up 2-0, but Peavy quickly blew the lead.Walks to Jason Bartlett and Ben Zobrist sandwiched Crawford’s single, loading the bases with nobody out to start the third. One out later, Peavy walked Pena to force in a run. After B.J. Upton struck out, Burrell’s two-run single gave Tampa Bay a 3-2 lead.Pena singled to open the fifth and went to third on Upton’s double. A walk to Burrell loaded the bases before Brignac’s two-run single chased Peavy. Randy Williams got Bartlett to pop out but gave up Crawford’s two-run double to make it 7-2.Pena added a three-run double in the eighth, giving him 18 RBI.Zobrist doubled twice, singled, walked and scored twice to snap out of a 3-for-26 slump.

NOTES—The Rays won eight games in 2004 on their previous best trip. … Rays RHP Matt Garza returned home to be with his wife Thursday for the birth of their son but is expected to make his scheduled start Friday vs. Toronto. At 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA, Garza has been the AL’s best pitcher. … Crawford batted .385 on the trip. … White Sox 2B Gordon Beckham (2-for-17 slump) and CF Alex Rios (5 for 27 career vs. Shields) weren’t in the lineup for the first time this year. … White Sox RF Carlos Quentin was dropped from third to sixth in the batting order but went 0 for 3 and is hitless in his last 23 at-bats. Asked before the game if he was trying to take pressure off Quentin or gain production for the team, Guillen said: “Try to give him less pressure. More production, I don’t think we’re going to get it the way he’s swinging.” …Juan Pierre got his 466th stolen base, moving into 43rd place on the career list.

Francoeur added an RBI single, his first hit since April 16.Davis followed with his second hit, ending Gorzelanny’s night. James Russell walked Rod Barajas to load the bases. Mike Fontenot then failed to field Angel Pagan’s chopper for an error, when he was distracted by Barajas, running past the second baseman as the ball bounced at the edge of the grass and dirt. Two runs scored to make it 4-0.Gorzelanny gave up four hits and four runs — two earned — in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two.Santana followed up seven scoreless innings on Saturday night, an outing that was overshadowed by the final 13 innings of the Mets’ 20-inning win over St. Louis, with a gritty performance. He let the leadoff batter reach in four innings — only one scoring, with help from Francoeur’s fielding error in the seventh. The Cubs put runners on third with one out after leadoff doubles in the second and third, and in the fourth had first and third with one out but Marlon Byrd was thrown out at home after getting caught in a rundown. In the sixth, Santana gave up a single before striking out the side.Geovany Soto singled to right-center to start the seventh and went to second when the ball deflected off a running Francoeur’s glove for an error.
